James Stevenson Franks, age 90, of Newport, passed away Tuesday, September 2, 2003, after a lingering illness.
Mr. Franks was born January 5, 1913, being one of seven children of the late Hilliard and Sally Sorrell Franks in Del Rio, TN.
He was a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College from where he many years later received an Honorary Doctorate Degree. He wed the former Agnes Cureton on August 16, 1940.
Mr. Franks was retired from the Newport Utilities Board as the general manager, very active in the First United Methodist Church in which he served on many of the committees and taught the Barker Sunday School Class, and a dedicated member of the Newport Kiwanis Club and served as District Governor in 1959.
He was chairman of the building committee of Baptist Hospital of Cocke County, and served on the Cocke County Economic Development Commission as well as the Newport Regional Planning Commission. He was a 50-year member of the Newport Masonic Lodge #234.
He was Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Holston Conference Colleges and was a Trustee of Morristown College. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Merchants and Planters Bank.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Agnes Cureton Franks; son, James S. Franks Jr., of MS; several nieces and nephews; and an uncountable number of friends and former co-workers.
Funeral services will be held 6:00 p.m. Thursday, September 4, 2003, at First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Freddrick Long and Alvin Watts officiating after the family receives friends from 4 until 6 p.m. prior to the services.
Interment will follow in Union Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to First United Methodist Church, Holston Home for Children, the American Cancer Society, of a charity of your choice.
