New position a dream come true for Kim Grosser
BOYDS CREEK - When Jan Moore left Boyds Creek Elementary School to become the new principal of Seymour Primary School, Kim Grosser's dream had come true. But not in a bad way.
Moore's departure paved the way for Grosser, who taught sixth through eighth-grade science during Boyds Creek's first year, to be promoted as the school's new assistant principal.
"I was actually a student at (the original) Boyds Creek Elementary School years and years ago," Grosser said as she took a break from the school's preregistration period Wednesday. "I went from kindergarten through first grade.
"When I heard they were going to build a school here, I knew I wanted to be a part of it," she said. "It's just like being home. I've got a lot to learn, but I'm ready for it."
Grosser said she and principal John Wade talked at length about the school's continued growth.
"We had about 380 students last year and we're expecting a little over 500 this year," Grosser said. "That's changing a lot of classroom sizes and having to find room for everybody."
Grosser said she has gotten a lot of support from fellow teachers, and would not feel awkward working above them.
"I've worked with most of them for a year because we were a new school," she said. "I don't think there will be any problems. We have some great teachers here, and I think it will work out fine. I'm excited, and I think they are too.
"I wanted this position for so long," Grosser said. "Years ago, when they started building this school, I was at Pigeon Forge Middle, and Jerry Wear is the principal there. I told him then that's where I want to be and I want to be an administrator there. He took me under his wing, and he helped me along and let me do things teachers don't normally get to do, such as go to conferences for administrators. He's been a big help and influence to me."
Grosser said she will do her best to make a quick transition from teacher to administrator.
"I've been reading the handbooks and the school board policies," Grosser said. "I'll be actually checking lesson plans instead of writing them. I'm sure I'll miss being in the classroom. It hasn't quite hit home yet that I won't be teaching anymore."
She said Wade has given her lots of advice, and looks forward to filling Moore's shoes.
"I haven't gotten to talk to her a lot this summer," Grosser said. "We knew that she wanted to be a principal, and when we heard that position became open, we kind of suspected that she might move on to there. She'll be great at it."
Grosser said she ultimately wants to be a principal, but in the meantime looks forward to being a big part of the students' experience and working with the teachers.
"There's not a teacher in this building I would not want my child to have," Grosser said. "I was going to have my daughter in a class this year - she's really thrilled I got this position, because she doesn't have to have her mama as a teacher."
