Rev. Elmer Hurst, age 91, of Maryville, went home to be with his Lord at 8:25 AM, Monday, February 19, 2007, at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was born January 7, 1916, in Sevier County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Lester Hurst; brothers, Fletcher and James Hurst; brother and sister-in-law, Joy Lee and Wetonia Hurst; son-in-law, Ed Newport. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Margie Lawson Hurst; daughters, Edith L. Newport and Mary L. Walker, both of Maryville; son and daughter-in-law, John H. and Judy Hurst of Louisville; three grandchildren and their spouses, Stacy Lynn and Timothy Hubbard of Friendsville, Travers Clay and Monica Hurst of Knoxville; and Wendy Jo and Kyle Pittman of Seymour; six great-grandchildren, Tyler Hill, Caleb and Weston Hubbard, Jenna and Sarah Beth Pittman, and Abigail Hurst; sister and brother-in-law, Jewel and Everett Evans of Greenback; numerous nieces and nephews; and countless friends. Rev. Hurst was called by the Lord to be a minister of the Gospel in 1948, and pastored 15 churches in East Tennessee and Zion, Illinois. He lived his life serving the Lord, preaching the Gospel, and trying to win souls to Christ. Rev. Hurst touched many lives and made many friends throughout his ministry. Due to health reasons, Rev. Hurst retired from the ministry in 1981 but continued to serve as interm/supply pastor for three churches until 1987. Rev. Hurst was a 50-year member of the New Providence Lodge #128, Free and Accepted Masons. Funeral service will be held 2:30 PM Wednesday, February 21, 2007, at Miller Funeral Home Magnolia Chapel with the interment service to follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Bros. Barry Clanton, George Gilbert, and Greg Kelly officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home, Maryville, (865) 982-6041.
