McCARTER, COY RAY - age 89, of Seymour, passed away September 30, 2000 at UT Hospital. He was Past Master and Secretary of Knoxville Oriental Lodge F&AM, member of Eastern Star Arcadia Chapter 362 and founder and Elder of Saint Paul Church. Preceded in death by mother, Mettie Ogle; father, M.M. McCarter; son, Herbert L. McCarter; sister, Ersa Luke; brother, Creed McCarter; half brother, Bruce Ogle.
Survivors: wife of 73 years, Vernette B. McCarter; daughters and sons in law, Edith and James O'Dell, Jr., Knoxville, Gladys and James Brackett, Seymour, Rebecca and Lonnie Prater, Seymour, Hilda and Fred Mikels, Knoxville; 20 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; brother, Kenneth McCarter, Lake City; half brothers, Gentry Ogle, Jonathan Ogle, Sevierville; Jahu Ogle, Knoxville; half sisters, Missy Newcomb and Ada Straut, Knoxville. Funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday, Berry Chapel. Rev. George W. Ott, Jr. and Rev. Haskue Smart officiating. Interment highland South Cemetery. Pallbearers will be James O'Dell Jr., James Brackett, Lonnie Prater, Jimmy O'Dell, Coy L. McCarter, Billy R. Lane, David Lane and Richard O'Dell. Coy Ray McCarter, 89, of Seymour died Sept. 30, 2000 at University of Tennessee Hospital. He was founder and elder of Saint Paul Church.
His parents were Mettie Ogle and M.M. McCarter. He was preceded in death by his son Herbert L. McCarter; one sister, one brother, one half-brother.
Survivors include his wife, Vernette B. McCarter; daughters and sons-in-law, Edith and James O'Dell Jr. of Knoxville, Gladys and James Brackett of Seymour, Rebecca and Lonnie Prater of Seymour, Hilda and Fred Mikels of Knoxville; 20 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren, 11 great great grandchildren; brother, Kenneth McCarter of Lake City; half-brothers Gentry Ogle and Jonathan Ogle of Sevierville; Jahu Ogle of Knoxville; half-sisters Missy Newcomb and Ada Straut of Knoxville.
Funeral service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Berry Chapel, with the Rev. George W. Ott Jr. and the Rev. Haskue Smart officiating. Interment will be at Highland South Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday with a Masonic service to follow at 8 p.m. in the chapel of Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.
