UNDERWOOD, L.D. - age 90 of Strawberry Plains passed away to go be with the Lord on Saturday, August 19, 2006. He was a member of Chilhowee Baptist Church. He was retired from Standard Knitting Mills. He was a decorated veteran of WWII. Preceded in death by parents, Charlie and Ida Underwood; wife, Bessie Whillock Underwood; brothers, Wiley, Boyd, and Leonard; sisters, Cleo Romines, Ruth Catlet, Willie Smith, and Irene Underwood; and several nieces and nephews. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and John Lee of Strawberry Plains; grandson and wife, Danny and Debbie Lee of Strawberry Plains; granddaughter and husband, Donna and Tom Koerner of Clinton; step-grandson and wife, Jeremy and Kim Nichols of Knoxville; step-granddaughter and husband, Kassidy and Lynn Hazelwood of Talbot; step-granddaughter, Brittany Nichols of Knoxville; great-granddaughters, Lora-Grace and Hannah Lee Koerner of Clinton; great-great-grandson, Tyler Hazelwood of Talbot; sister, Bertha Young of Hermitage, TN; sister-in-law, Rose Mary Underwood of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their thanks to Hillcrest West Health Care and to Cares Hospice. Funeral services will be 8 PM Sunday in the chapel at Bridges Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Tatum and Rev. Lee Chorn officiating. Family and friends will meet 10 AM Monday at the funeral home and proceed to Beech Springs Cemetery for an 11 AM interment. Pallbearers: Johnny Romines, David Huffaker, J.T. Whillock, Terry Underwood, Rolly Young and Jim Seals. Military honors will be provided by the E. TN Veteran Honor Guard. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Sunday at Bridges Funeral Home, 5430 Rutledge Pike, 523-4999.
