HOWARD, LIEUTENANT COLONEL HUGH EMERT, II "BUD" - age 67, passed away peacefully at Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville, TN on Sunday, November 30th, 2014. He died from complications following heart surgery. Born December 2, 1946 in Columbus, Georgia, Muscogee County he traveled extensively throughout his life as a military child but Bud always considered Tennessee his home. Bud graduated high school from Fayetteville, North Carolina and he earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Tennessee in '68 with honors from the Geography Society. He also earned a Masters degree in Business. Bud served two tours in Vietnam once with the 101st Airborne Division as an Infantry platoon leader and next as a helicopter pilot. He also served in Ranger and Pathfinder units. Bud retired as Provost for ROTC at the University of Tennessee. His military service earned him a number of medals including a Purple Heart but his biggest joy in life was his family. He had a great love of food that he shared with all he knew in addition to his love of golf. He is preceded in death by his mother Jama Birchfield; his father Hugh Emert Howard and his sister Caroline Anne. He is survived by his wife of 16 years Jeannie Carol Howard ; his sister Valerie Howard Gass (Gregory); his sons Kenneth Estill Howard "Tad" (Heather), Hugh E. Howard III "Trey", Richard D. Howard ; his daughter Cherie K. McCauley; his stepson Brian L. Owen and his grandchildren James H. Milazzo- Howard, Catherine C. Howard "Daisy", Vivian R. Howard "Dixie" and BaiLeigh M. Owen. Receiving of friends and family will be held at Steven's Mortuary from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 3, 2014 with funeral services immediately following. Family and friends will meet 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Stevens Mortuary to go in procession to East Tennessee Veteran's Cemetery for a 9:30 a.m. graveside service and interment. Military honors will be presented by East Tennessee Veteran Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers please send contributions to the American Legion Charities, P.O. Box 361626, Indianapolis, IN 46236.
