Dorothy Douthat Manley, long time Gatlinburg resident, died Thursday, June 16, 2005, in Cramerton, North Carolina. She was born October 14, 1911, to Senator Charles A. Douthat and Estelle Moore Douthat of Quapaw, Oklahoma. She was the widow of Joe Frank Manley of Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
Her ancestors were early settlers and entrepreneurs in the Oklahoma Territory. She was proud of her Native American heritage and honored to be a great-great granddaughter of the last principal chief of the Miami Nation. Her father was an esteemed banker and legislator; her mother was Postmaster of Quapaw.
At Drury College, in MO, she was violin-concertmaster, lyric soprano soloist and member of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity. She left the “dustbowl” of Oklahoma in 1934 to teach at the Pi Beta Phi Settlement School in Gatlinburg and was moved to tears by the lush greenery of what was to become her beloved mountains. Generations of schoolchildren rallied to her famed, two-fingered whistle on the playground.
Dorothy soon met and married the love of her life, Joe Frank Manley, the first forester for the soon to be Great Smoky Mountains National Park, who was an authority on birds, trees, and fish of the region, and a catalyst for the preservation of Cades Cove. Together they were involved in the betterment of the Park and the Gatlinburg community.
She was active in the First Baptist Church and Sanctuary Choir, the alumni association of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity and the Board of Directors for Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. As well as her many talents, her love and loyalty, her boundless energy, and irrepressible laughter are her legacy.
