Dorothy H. Hicks (Grandmother), of Seymour, died Thursday, May 19, 2016.
Dot was born to O.B. and Effie Kate Hodge on February 21, 1921, and was raised in the Beech Springs Community. She is preceded in death by her son, Nicholas H. Hicks, Sr., son-in-law, Lawrence Atkins and sister, Naomi King.
She was married to Glen R. Hicks in 1938, and later they moved to the Union Valley community. She loved the Valley and spent the rest of her life there. In 1947 she was baptized in Bill Hicks' pond and became a member of Union Valley Baptist Church, where she spent many years teaching children's classes and touching numerous lives. She held various positions in the church, ending with teaching senior adult women. She was "grandmother" to generations of her community.
After the passing of her husband in 1969, Dot completed her GED. Then, with the encouragement of her sister-in-law, Dorothy Keener, they became LPNs. Dot began her nursing career at Sevier County Medical Center where she worked in surgery and labor and delivery. She completed her career working as a charge nurse at Sevier County Nursing Home.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Gary Jones, who were dedicated and loving caregivers. She is also survived by her daughter Judy Atkins; daughter-in-law, Marion Hicks; grandchildren, Nicholas H. Hicks Jr.; Keith Atkins; Kent and Donna Atkins; Kip and Davonne Atkins; and special granddaughter Mary Glen and her husband Matt Cate; great-grandchildren, Leslie Hicks; Nicholas Glen Hicks; Dr. Danielle Fay and husband Matt; Suzanne Atkins; Kaitlin Atkins; Karson Atkins; and, in heaven, Karlee Beth Atkins. As a great-great grandmother, she is survived by Lynnsey MacDonald, Katryn MacDonald, Lyla Kate Fay and Riley Fay. Also, special niece, Peggy Gossett.
Pallbearers include Nicky Hicks, Kent Atkins, Kip Atkins, Matt Cate, Nicholas Hicks, and Karson Atkins. Honorary pallbearers include Keith Atkins and Jonathan Ledford.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Union Valley Baptist Church Lottie Moon fund, which Dot supported throughout her life.
