Hazel Wilson Hatcher, age 96 of Knoxville, went to be with her Lord and loved ones Friday, October 11, 2013 from Little Creek Nursing Home. She was a long time member of Magnolia Avenue United Methodist Church.
Hazel studied journalism at the University of Tennessee, and worked for News Sentinel of Knoxville, and the Spokesman Review of Spokane, Washington. She was active in church where she oversaw the creation and expansion of the church library. Hazel was an artist and a poet, and authored two books, one a collection of original poetry, and the other a genealogy entitled Speedwell Seasons. Hazel was chaplain of the Knox County Council of garden clubs. She and husband Sherrill were charter members and co-chairs of Contact of Knoxville, established a scholarship fund at Hiwassee College, and taught hundreds to water ski at their cottage on Douglas Lake.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Sherrill T. Hatcher; parents, George and Mary Love Wilson; brothers Claude, Clyde, Ralph and Roy Wilson; sisters Ruth Wilson Lynch, Lou Wilson Murrian, Ester Wilson Williams, and Opal Wilson.
Hazel is survived by sisters-in-law Agnes Marshall and Rena Wilson; brother-in-law Weston Murrian; godsons Steve Murrian, Robert Marquis, and Richard Marquis; a cousin, friend, and co-worker in Wilson genealogy, Larry Wilson; many loving nieces and nephews; and recent beloved caregivers Christa Kauffman, Joan Bunch, Jane Fox, Carrie Turner, and Mack Marshall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made either to Magnolia Avenue United Methodist Church, 2700 E Magnolia Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37914, or to the Hazel & Sherrill Hatcher scholarship fund at Hiwassee College, 225 Hiwassee College Drive, Madisonville, TN, 37354.
The family will receive friends 11 AM-12 PM Tuesday, October 15 with funeral service following at 12 PM at Magnolia Avenue Methodist Church with Rev. Frank M "Bob" Bostic and Rev.
