He was a decorated veteran who served in World War II with the Battery “A” 470th 3rd Anti-Aircraft. He received the World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, AP Theater Ribbon with bronze service stars and one bronze Arrowhead Philippine Liberation Ribbon and one bronze star Go 23 Hq USAFFE45. He was preceded in death by his wife Louise Eldridge Hayes, parents John Wesley and Rosie Johnson Hayes, brothers Lonnie, Johnnie and Basil Hayes, sisters Lillie Cvetnich, Hazel Quarrels, Georgia Ogle, and Nova Henry, grandchildren Jerome Hayes, Joshua Alan Ott, and Kathy Hayes Caughron, son-in-law Bob Cowan, and special friend Jama Webb. Survived by: Sons and daughters-in-law: Mark and Phyllis Hayes, Marion and Ida Hayes, Paul and Elaine Hayes Daughters and sons-in-law: Sharon and Jack Reagan, Evelyn Cowan, Nolene and Doug Ott 15 Grandchildren 30 Great-grandchildren Serving as pallbearers will be Kevin and Mike Reagan, Bobbie and Brad Cowan, Tony Hayes, Matthew and Jonathon Ott, and Timmy Hayes. The family will receive friends 5-7 PM Wednesday with funeral service beginning at 7 PM in Atchley’s Seymour Chapel with Rev. Dwight Singleton officiating. Interment 12 noon Thursday in Bays Mountain Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post #104.
