John Wallace Grim – age 75 of Sevierville died at home Tuesday morning October 2, 2007 surrounded by his family. A native of West Virginia, he spent most of his life in Sevierville after his family moved south when he was a young boy.
He was preceded in death by his parents Mark S. Grim, Sr., and Elizabeth Hardin Grim and an infant son.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Eva Carmon Grim, sons Paul Wallace Grim of Sevierville and John David Grim and daughter-in-law Kathryn R. Grim of Powell; brother Mark S. Grim Jr., of Norris and sister Wanda Thomas and brother-in-law Joe T. Thomas of Norris and grandchildren Sarah Elizabeth Grim and Matthew Robert Grim. Special friends Jack and Elizabeth Denton, cousin Casina Huff and many other cousins, nieces and nephews.
A veteran of the United States Navy, where he rose to the rank of First-Class Petty Officer, he served as a photographer on the famed battleship Missouri. His work while on the ship was recently honored by being displayed at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., and on the Missouri where she is now a museum ship in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Prior to his tour of duty in the Navy, he attended the University of Tennessee where he was a member of the Pride of the Southland Marching Band.
After careers in various businesses including photography, farming, insurance and woodworking, he spent much of the last two decades as a dedicated member of the American Legion Post 104 in Sevierville where he served as Commander and Honor Guard Commander. He was named Legionnaire of the Year in 2003 in recognition of his work. Last year he was named as an Honorary Life Member of the American Legion, the organization’s highest award. As a member of the Sevierville Lions Club, where he served as president, he was recognized as Lion of the Year and as a Melvin Jones Fellow, the organization’s top honor. He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Sevierville.

Funeral service will be 7 PM Thursday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Charlie Harrison and Rev. Bobby Ely officiating. A graveside service with full military honors will be 10 a.m. Friday morning in Shiloh Cemetery. Members of the Sevierville American Legion Post 104 will serve as honorary pallbearers.
