WALDENS CREEK - Citizens of this community gathered at their local volunteer fire department Saturday night for an evening of fun, food and remembrances.
The Waldens Creek Volunteer Fire Department held its annual fall supper and auction, which, according to officials, seems to get bigger every year.
"I think this is the 11th year, and we do better every year," said Department Lt. Chuck Conley.
This year held a special note, as the recently constructed facilities now housing the department were dedicated in honor and memory of Larry "Gomer" Helton.
Helton was a 21-year veteran of the force and did much of the work on the inside of the new structure.
"He was always here 24 hours a day, seven days a week," recalled Conley.
He noted that Helton was a shy man who did not like to have his picture taken, although there is one that hangs on the department's bulletin board.
"He probably would have been embarrassed by all of this," Conley said.
Conley said Helton began a collection of patches from departments around the country that are now displayed in a special case in the department's offices.
"We'll continue this in his memory," Conley said.
Helton's department number, 904, was retired shortly after his death from a heart attack in April.
