April 17, 1932 - October 18, 2017
Carl Lee Gibson, Sr., age 85 of South Knoxville, TN went home with a friend, our Lord and Savior on Wednesday October 18, 2017 after several years of heart failure, diabetes, and crippling arthritis. Born into the Gibson family in April of 1932, he was raised as a stepchild until the age of 15. Carl once paid a stranger on the street to sign for him to go into the Army. He later joined the Navy, and after joined the Air Force. In 1974 he was born into the family of God where he became a child of God. Carl was a stepchild no more. He pastored 2 churches, filled in at several churches, and taught Sunday School at Seymour Baptist Tabernacle, I.C. King Rd. and Valley View Baptist Church, South Knox Co., where he was a member. He was also a Chaplain at the Knox Co. Jail where he performed baptisms. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Fleata Gibson; grandson, James Gibson, Jr.; granddaughters, Kristin Gibson and Kailee Taylor; sister, Louise Gibson; brothers, Theodore and Fred Gibson; and several half brothers and sisters.
Sadly missing him are his: wife of 65 years, Mary Ann (Crain) Gibson; sons, Carl Gibson, Jr. and wife Sherry, James Gibson and wife Brenda, Rev. Freddy Gibson and wife Angie; daughters, Charlotte Gibson, Sandra Finchum and husband Donnie, Debra Henry and husband David, Janet Holloway and husband Steve, and Karen Gibson; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; several half brothers and sisters, nephews, and nieces; sisters-in-law, Cora Sue DeLozier and husband Johnny, and Oca Crain of Niota, TN.
The family will receive friends 5-7 PM Friday in Atchley’s Seymour Chapel with a funeral service to follow at 7 PM with Rev. Freddy Gibson and Carl Gibson, Jr. officiating. Interment 11 AM Saturday in Valley View Cemetery (Tarklin Valley). Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post #104.
