Betty Fox Lewelling, 84 passed away Friday, January 11th. She was born in a log house ("It was not a 'cabin', it was a full sized house") on Walden's Creek to Roy E. and Pearl Fox. She spent her childhood on "the Creek" where her family ran Fox's Store--except for the years her father served as Sheriff, when she and her family resided "with the trustees and the prisoners" at the County Jailhouse in Sevierville. She played basketball at Sevier County High School and afterwards attended Lincoln Memorial University. Upon graduating with a degree in Education, she returned to Walden's Creek and taught school at Benson Elementary.
In 1953, she married Carl Lewelling Jr.--her best friend's brother--and moved "above the tunnel" to Gatlinburg. She lived there for the remainder of her life, but taught second grade at Pigeon Forge Elementary School for more than two decades.
She was raised a Methodist and maintained a life-long devotion to both Walden's Creek United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Church of Gatlinburg. She was also a fervent fan of the U.T. Volunteer football and basketball teams.
She loved her family, her mountains, her students and the people of Sevier County.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister Virginia Fox and her brother Kenneth Fox. She is survived by her daughter and, son-in-law Janice and David Schoonover, of Peoria, AZ, her son and daughter-in-law Joe and Vickie Lewelling of Arlington, Virginia, her grandchildren, Carl, Tait and Chloe Lewelling, several nieces and nephews , her dear friends Dorothy Mize and Teri Jacobs.
Her family is grateful for the love and care provided in her final year by Mountain Brook Village Retirement Home, Amedisys Hospice, her nieces Brenda Ownby and Anita Holt and her long time care giver, Gerri Beale.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Sevier County Delta Kappa Gamma Scholarship Fund, 2435 Jones Cove Road, Sevierville, TN 37876.
