**Asa Layman (Son of James Layman and Malina Fox)
Asa Layman of Newport, aged 87 years, 10 months and 4 days died at 1 P.M. Monday, August 22, 1927 after a brief illness (pneumonia) and was buried in the Burchfiel Memorial Cemetery Tuesday, Aug. 23, service by Rev. O.L. Underwood of Dandridge and Rev. Walter Russell.
He was formerly a citizen of Sevier County and was an esteemed citizen. He was a Union soldier in the war of the states. He was twice married and is survived by his second wife and two sons and six daughters by his first marriage: James Layman, Rt. 3, Sevierville; Jack Layman, Rt. 11, Sevierville; Mrs. Lawson Fox (Betty), Rt. 11, Sevierville; Mrs. A.L.Chaney (Mattie), Rt. 11, Sevierville; Mrs. Oliver Henry (Vina), Dandridge; Mrs. Lem Wilson (Alice), Newport; Miss Thursey Layman, Newport; Mrs. J.W, Feezel, Rt. 11, Sevierville; and one sister, Mrs. Todd Striplin, Dandridge. A son, Will Layman, died 14 years ago. A daughter Louisa, died in infancy.
Aug. 31, 1927 - Additional Information: Lived on Woodlawn Ave, Newport where he had moved in 1910; had moved from Bird’s Cross Roads, Sevier Co, TN.

Born Sept. 24, 1839. Member of Bird’s Cross Roads Methodist Church.
Married: In 1866 m. Miss Debbie Lewis - 10 children. She died 12 March 1916. In Sept 1918 m. Mary Costner.
Three of his old comrades, Moss Lane, James Bird, and John Brimer marched with the relatives to the grave.
