A.E. (Ben) Clevenger, age 85, of Knoxville left this world and entered the arms of Jesus early Friday morning, May 24, 2013.
He was born on April 9, 1928 in Rutledge, Tennessee and always cherished his Grainger County roots. Ben served with the U S Army during the Korean War. After his military service he was employed by the DeVilbiss Company of Toledo, Ohio, where he worked faithfully for 34 years until retirement in 1991. Thereafter, he worked with his family at West Knox Farm Market. Ben was loved by many loyal customers, with whom he shared his smile, friendship and sometimes his lunch.
He was a member of Cedar Springs Presbytarian Church for over 30 years. Ben was devoted to his Lord and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arville Ernest Clevenger Sr. and Ella Spencer and was the last of 11 siblings.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaret Creswell Clevenger, who lovingly cared for him all of his days; daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Greg McWhorter; son and daughter-in-law, Kelly and Lauren Clevenger all of Knoxville; grandchildren, Carson, Will and Meg McWhorter all of Knoxville, Aaron Clevenger and wife Alicia of Chattanooga, and Pati Alice Clevenger of Knoxville; several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to all those who lovingly cared for Ben during his illness.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 26 in the Chapel of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church with Rev. Scott Jackson officiating. Receiving of friends will follow the service. Private graveside services will be held at Boyds Creek Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church, 9132 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37923, or to CADES, c/o Concord United Methodist Church, 11020 Roane Drive, Farragut, TN 37934.
