COFFEY, SAM DAVID, SR. — age 74, of Milligan Road, Afton, died Wednesday, February 4, 2004 at Takoma Adventist Hospital. He was an aircrew member (Airborne Radio Operator) in the United States Air Force for more than twenty years, retiring in 1970. He flew combat missions during the Korean War and again in the Viet Nam War. During the Cold War he was involved in missions all over the world in cargo aircraft. After retirement he completed his BS degree in business and later completed a degree as a Respiratory Therapist. He was Supervisor of the Respiratory Therapy department at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Johnson City, TN when he retired the second time. Among his many decorations are the Air Medal with one oak leaf cluster and the Air Force Commendation Medal. He was a member of Stone Dam United Methodist Church and was a 32nd Degree Mason, having been a member of Masonic Lodge No. 1 F & AM in Manila, Philippines.
He is survived by a daughter: Karen Jean Coffey of Dallas, TX; a son: Sam David Coffey, Jr. and his wife Hazel of Greeneville; a granddaughter: Sara Jean Coffey of Greeneville; his sister: Zona Mae Walker of Columbus, GA; daughter-in-law: Tamara Miller of Greene County; a special friend: Norma Hartman of Chuckey; brother- in-law & sister-in-law: Andy & Jean Nichols of Mosheim; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was the son of the late Grover Cleveland and Katherine Wright Coffey and was preceded in death by his wife: Jonelle Moore Coffey, a son: Steven Moore Coffey, two brothers: James T. Coffey and Daniel W. Coffey; and his mother-in-law: Hazel Moore.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p. m. Sunday (02/08/04) from Rose Hill Chapel. The Rev. Bill Rines, the Rev. Roy Fowler, and the Rev. Richard Long will officiate. Interment will follow in Bewley's Chapel Cemetery with the U. S. Air Force Honor Guard from Shaw Air Force conveying full military honors. The family will receive friends from 2 — 4 p. m. and 6 — 8 p. m. on Saturday at Rose Hill Funeral Home. The casket will be closed during the Saturday night visitation. Active pallbearers will be Alan Hartman, Guyman Gregg, J. Allen Broyles, Lecile Headrick, Charles Milligan, and Michael Nichols. The family wishes to express appreciation to Dr. James Ray McKinney and the caregivers at Laughlin Health Care Center, Morning Pointe Assisted Living, and Takoma Adventist Hospital, which will serve as honorary pallbearers.
