A Gatlinburg man was taken into custody Sunday after an early morning shooting and standoff with Sevier County sheriff's deputies, warrants state.
Officers Stuart Reagan and Mark Lipton responded to a call that someone was firing a high-powered rifle in the area of Hills Creek Road, Sevier County Sheriff Bruce Montogomery said.
The officers reported seeing Stanley Creed Proffitt, 46, with a lever-action rifle at the intersection of Highway 321 and Hills Creek Road at about 1 a.m. Sunday. He also reportedly had ammunition strapped around him.
They later discovered the rifle was loaded, according to the warrant.
When the officers commanded Proffitt to stop, he allegedly kept walking to a residence, from where he allegedly fired a .44 caliber revolver out the door at them, SCSD Det. Stephanie McClure said Monday. McClure said the officers returned fire and then convinced Proffitt to surrender his weapons.
She reported no one was injured in the shooting.
Proffitt was arrested and allegedly found to have a .357 caliber revolver on him in addition to the rifle and other revolver, warrants state.
After Proffitt was arrested, he was allegedly found with a bag of marijuana and appeared to be drunk, officers stated.
Proffitt, of 116 Nellrose Lane in Gatlinburg, was officially charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, unlawful possession of a weapon, carrying a weapon while under the influence, public intoxication, resisting arrest and simple drug possession. He was released on $34,000 bond.
Proffitt is set to appear in Sevier County General Sessions Court at 9 a.m. on Oct. 31.
