Carrolls to leave CNB
Billy Carroll Jr. resigns, father to retire in May '06
By: CANDICE GRIMM, Staff Writer November 06, 2005
Carroll Jr.
Billy Carroll Jr., executive vice president and chief financial officer for Citizens National Bank (CNB), resigned his position Thursday, at the same time his father, Bill Carroll Sr., a founder of the bank and chairman of the board, announced his retirement from CNB.
Reached Friday by telephone, Billy Carroll, 37, said, "Our board of directors and I had a difference of opinion on the strategic vision for the bank.''
Carroll said he has been with the bank 13 years, and had served as chief financial officer the past five years, but that with Bill Carroll Sr.'s retirement announcement, "I felt it was a good time for me, personally, to make a change."
Carroll went on to say, "I enjoy banking. I had an opportunity to work with a great group of people at CNB, and I will miss them greatly. In a situation like that, it's tough to make a change from an organization you've been with a long time."
Carroll said his father was in Chicago on Friday, but that he had announced he would retire by May of 2006.
As for his future, Carroll said, "Right now I would like to stay in banking - hopefully here. This is a great community, and I've been very surprised and pleased that I have had a number of calls already offering support and assistance. I want to talk with others in the community whose opinions I value to see what opportunities are out there before I make a decision on my future."
David Verble, president of the bank, could not be reached for comment.

Smokies groups receive $11,312 donation
SmartBank President Billy Carroll, left, presents a check for $11,311.60 to Friends of the Smokies President Jim Hart, center, and Great Smoky Mountains Association Executive Director Terry Maddox.

SmartBank President and CEO Billy Carroll presented donation checks Friday to Friends of the Smokies President Jim Hart and Great Smoky Mountains Association Executive Director Terry Maddox from funds generated through SmartBank’s SmartGreen Account.
The SmartGreen Account was created in May 2009. This year’s donation totals $11,312, with $5,098 going to GSMA and $6,213 for Friends of Smokies.
“When we created SmartGreen, we wanted to do something special that would encourage environmental awareness as well as benefit the organizations that work so hard to
help promote, maintain and protect our mountains,” said Carroll. “We’re so fortunate to have the park here. It brings 10 to 12 million visitors a year, and we all benefit from that. The reason we’re here is because of the Great Smoky Mountains.”
The SmartGreen account is a “green-friendly,” paperless account designed so that an equal donation is made to both GSMA & Friends of the Smokies every time a SmartBank account holder uses their SmartGreen debit card for signature-based transactions. In addition to the donations accumulated through debit card usage, the bank’s clients have the option to make additional contributions to GSMA and/or Friends of the Smokies through automatic deduction from their SmartGreen account.
“The donations have the potential to grow substantially as the bank grows, and this is something we considered when we created SmartGreen,” said Kelley Fowler, SmartBank assistant vice president for public relations and marketing officer. “We wanted to cultivate something that had the ability to gain momentum over the years and would truly impact our beautiful park.”
“We think this is one of the most creative fundraising techniques, and we’re thrilled to be a part of it,” Hart said.
“SmartBank can be assured this contribution to GSMA will be an investment in the preservation of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the future generations who cherish it,” Maddox added.
Friends of the Smokies is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that assists the National Park Service in its mission to preserve and protect GSMNP by raising funds and awareness and providing volunteers for needed projects.
GSMA was founded in 1953 as a nonprofit organization to support the educational, historical and scientific programs of the park. It is a publisher of information on the Smokies, an operator of bookstores in the park and a membership organization. Proceeds from these activities go directly to park projects.
