SEVIERVILLE - Wallace Moore, 83, of Seymour, will be laid to rest today in Mount Zion Cemetery with full military honors and an honor guard from the Sevier County Sheriff's Department.
Moore worked for 30 years at the East Tennessee Packing Company, but he also worked for more than half a century as a deputy with the county's law enforcement agency.
"He was a super-nice guy," recalled Sheriff Bruce Montgomery.
The sheriff said that when he took office, Moore was helping supervise inmates as they picked up trash along the roadsides.
"He helped a lot of young people at the times they were in trouble and needed that sort of guidance," Montgomery said.
Moore retired from the department in 2003, but he and Deputy Chief Ron Seals remained best friends to the very end.
Seals remembered his friend for his wit and his wisdom.
"As a young officer, I always listened to words of wisdom in what he said and took it as an inspiration," said Seals. "He taught me to treat people with respect. He was an extremely good officer, and he did not hesitate to tell you what was right and what was wrong."
He added that Moore always "took care of the people," and he could be trusted to do what he said he was going to do.
There was also the lighthearted side of Moore that Seals said he fondly remembers.
"We used to tell tales on each other at the barbershop we both went to," he said with a smile. "If you had something on him, he'd get you back."
The barbershop also became the site of a running gag between the two friends.
"It became sort of a running joke about who was going to pay the tab for our haircuts," Seals said.
Seals said the things he would miss most about Moore is "the smile on his face and the witty things he would say."
"He believed in Sevier County, and he took great pride in his service," Seals noted. "He was missed when he retired and will be missed now."
Funeral services for Moore were held Sunday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with the Rev. Dallas Moore and the Rev. Floyd Powell officiating. Interment will be at 11 a.m. today in Zion Hill Cemetery.
