Howard Albert Pasel, age 93, died August 29, 2007, at Baptist Health Care Center in Lenoir City. Only son of the late Albert and Eva (Berg) Pasel, he was born in Elba, New York in 1914. He was nurtured spiritually during his childhood and youth in the Presbyterian faith. Following graduation from Houghton College, he taught school for several years. Then, he decided to enter pastoral ministry of the Methodist Church, preparing at Colgate-Rochester Divinity School. He was a person of ecumenical mind and spirit, and for 38 years, he pastored a total of 35 small rural churches in New York and Tennessee. In 1979, he retired from the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church and made his home in Gatlinburg for 16 years, before moving to Knoxville in 1995. In addition, he was an avid gardener since his teenage years and developed a talent for oil painting later in life. He loved his family very much and will be greatly missed by all who knew him, including special friends Lee Hokaj, Sam Miller, and Pat Boatright.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Stella Lee (Ellis) Pasel.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Gretchen and Nelson Ward, and two grandsons and their families: Aaron and Michelle Ward and children, Johnathon, Jeoffrey, and Gwendolynne; and Shawn and Caycee Ward and children, Taylor and Benjamin, all of Knoxville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to Baptist Health Care Center, 700 Williams Ferry Road, Lenoir City, TN 37771. Mr. Pasel was surrounded by God’s love through the wonderful staff at Baptist Health Care Center for the last six months of his life. His family will be forever grateful.
