Johnie Matt Evans – age 82, went to sing in the Heavenly Choir at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 11, 1999. He was a long-time member of Byerley's Chapel Baptist Church and a member of the Old Byerley's Chapel Quartet. Mr. Evans was a 32nd Degree Mason at Mascot Masonic Lodge $738 and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #348. Survived by wife, Olive Smith Evans; daughters and sons-in-law Sena and Joe Norton of Strawberry Plains, Carolyn and Ray Haynes of Mascot, son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Sharon Evans of Strawberry Plains; seven grandchildren; two step-children; eleven great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; sisters Bonita Wahl of Tampa, Florida and Lily Sharp of Sevierville; beloved nephew; Junior Boling and loving nephew-in-law Therman Reed; faithful friend, Imogene Ford and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Masonic services will be held 8:00 p.m. Monday, September 13, 1999 at Byerley's Chapel Baptist Church. Funeral Services will follow at the church with Reverends Arthur Pedigo, Jimmy Dockins, Charles Oliver and Dewey Raley officiating. The family will be available at the home of Ray and Carolyn Haynes. Family and friends will assemble 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at Eastview Memorial Gardens for an 11 a.m. interment service. Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons. Honorary Pallbearers are to be the Deacons of Byerley's Chapel Baptist Church. In lier of floers, memorial donations are to be made to Byerley's Chapel Baptist Church Building Fund. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Byerley's Chapel Baptist Church. Friends may also call at their convenience from noon until 5:00 p.m. Sunday at McCarty Mortuary, 4004 Holston Drive, Knoxville.
