HOWARD, HUGH EMERT, SR. LTC, USA (RET.) - age 83 of Knoxville, passed away Feb. 11, 2000 at UT Hospital. He was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church. He retired from the United States Army after a distinguished 30 year career that included participation in WWII, the Korean War and Vietnam War. He received numerous awards and decorations including the Bronze Star for Valor, Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman badge and Master Parachutist Wings. After his military retirement he continued government service overseas working for the State Dept. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and throughout his life maintained close ties to the university by actively supporting the Athletic Dept. and establishing a scholarship in the College of Human Ecology. He was preceded in death by his parents, Crockett and Josie Howard ; wife, Jama Frances; daughter, Caroline Ann. He is survived by wife, Kathryn of Knoxville, son and daughter in law, LTC (Ret.) Hugh II and Jeannie Howardof Knoxville, daughter and son in law, Valerie and LTC Greg Gass of Ft. Campbell Ky.; sisters and brothers in law, Laverne and Ralph Newman of Sevierville, Lucille and Connie Gregory of Sevierville; numerous grandchildren; great grandchildren; nieces, and nephews. Graveside military services will be performed by soldiers from Ft. Campbell at 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 15 with Chaplain Thomas Holmes conducting the service at the National Cemetery in Knoxville. Rawlings Funeral Home in Sevierville in charge.
