...
Last Christmas season, I saw a fellow wandering around Wal-Mart wearing a red Santa Claus cap and discovered it was Don Rector, who we visited and featured. One of his brothers is Dallas Rector. I didn't put the connection together until Dallas made the comment during a February Kiwanis Club meeting that he is a Cocke County native. So, last week I sat down with Dallas at the Holiday Inn to find out more about him. Dallas said he was born in the Salem community near Parrottsville. His Dad was George Washington Rector who was married twice. His second wife, Dallas' Mom, was the former Ruth Ester Holt. George had 11 children. All the Clevenger Mom's daughters-the half-sisters-are deceased. You already know Donald who lives at the home place off Old Sevierville Hwy. Brother Jack Rector lives nearby and is retired from Great Lakes Chemical Corporation, as is Dallas. James lives in Knoxville and Frank is a resident of Wilmington, Delaware. Their sister is Helen (Mrs. James) Coggins.
At 66, Dallas has been retired since 2002, when he was environmental coordinator at the Newport plant shortly before it was closed and sold. I found out that Dallas, who was a lab technician and chemist, worked side-by-side with my late managing editor Dr. Stefan Kouton. Dallas attended Cave Church school when the family lived in the Carson Springs area and he was among the last graduating class at the old Newport high school around 1959. He joined the state Department of Transportation until a stint in the Army from 1963-65. When he returned, he was involved in the construction of both interstates 40 and 81 in our area as a surveyor's assistant. He also worked at American Enka and then joined Chemetron in the late 1960s. His wife is the former Veronica Pritchard, and some of you old timers will know that her father operated a machine shop next to the Gateway Garage-that was Earl Pritchard married to Susie. Dallas has a deceased son, Michael, and Veronica has two daughters: Rhonda of Cookeville and Denise of Charlotte, NC. Dallas is not content to sit around but got involved in Kiwanis and also assists Jim Baker as a bondsman. Until 2002, Dallas and Veronica had lived off Clevenger Cut-Off. During July 4 of that year, a storm hit, causing a fire that destroyed their home. They moved to Baneberry. During her early years Veronica worked with some of you at Enka and Lear Seigler but now spends her time with the six grandchildren.
Marie Bacon must be feeling much better these days. She was riding with her daughter-in-law, Yvonne Bacon, on Tuesday, when she stopped by the Plain Talk office. You recalled that we talked about her family, and I mentioned that she was a Lawhon. Marie explained that her father was Elbert Lawhon of Loudon County. He was a construction worker and was helping to build the large green Huff bridge on the Asheville Hwy. That's when he met Marie's mother, the former Edna Brooks. She is related to L. D. and H.C. Brooks, said Marie, who is a retired nurse.
In plain talk, few of us administer medicine or health care, but the majority of us profit by those with a mind for keeping folks well.
