SEVIER COUNTY - A Sevierville man was arrested early Friday morning and charged with second-degree murder for the slaying of a woman outside his home.
Curtis Owenby, 45, of 722 Crawfish Way, Sevierville, was arrested by Sevier County Sheriff's Department in connection with the slaying of Mary Ann Rayfield, 42, of 2220 Big River Overlook Drive, Sevierville.
"Alcohol was involved," Sheriff Bruce Montgomery said. "The investigation is still ongoing."
At approximately 1:20 a.m. Friday, Curtis's neighbor, at 720 Crawfish Way, called 911 to report the alleged shooting. Sheriff's Department officers arrived at the scene and found Rayfield lying face down in the driveway with a gunshot wound to her upper right chest. Rayfield was dead when the officers arrived, according to authorities.
Sheriff's Department Det. Mark Turner is conducting the investigation. Montgomery said Owenby was arrested without incident and arraigned at Sevier County Jail. Bond was set at $500,000.
"It's just a straight-forward case," Montgomery said.
Owenby's only other arrest was in 1996 for driving under the influence and on a revoked license. Friday was his birthday.
The last alleged murder in the county took place on Sept. 13 when Shane August Kaminski allegedly shot Terry Lynn Moore Jr. on Allensville Road.

SEVIER COUNTY - Second-degree murder charges against a Sevierville man were bound over to the grand jury Friday following a brief preliminary hearing that included a man who was at the scene.
Curtis Owenby, 45, of 722 Crawfish Way, was arrested May 28 after Mary Ann Rayfield, 42, of Sevierville, was found dead lying face down in Owenby's driveway with a gunshot wound to her chest, according to the Sevier County Sheriff's Department.
Brandon Hurst, 21, who was at the residence at the time of the alleged shooting, said he was looking at Rayfield when the shot was fired outside Owenby's residence.
He said he did not see Owenby come out of his house or fire a shot, but he did turn to see Owenby with a gun just after the shot was fired.
The trio had apparently been drinking alcohol at the house for some time, and Owenby and Rayfield had had an argument earlier in the day, according to Hurst.
Hurst said he drove to his house, where he called police just after the alleged shooting.
Owenby, who is still being held in lieu of $500,000, sat quietly through the hearing as General Sessions Court Judge Jeff Rader bound his case over to the grand jury for later this fall.
