Former county property assessor Whaley dies
by DEREK HODGES
County officials are remembering and mourning Glenn Whaley, the long-serving property assessor who passed away Monday after a years-long illness.
Whaley served in county elected office from1976-92, later into moving into a job as clerk for the Highway Department. He fought cancer, beating it into remission before the recurrence that ultimately claimed his life.
With news of Whaley’s death spreading quickly through the courthouse, County Mayor Larry Waters said he and others were sharing time recalling the man many called Glenn O, with O his middle initial.
“Glenn was in office when I took office,” Waters remembered. “As a county official, I think he certainly was knowledgeable in his job and efficient in his job. He worked hard to help many, many people.”
Whaley was known for more than just how he handled his public duties, Waters said.
“He was well-liked and had a great sense of humor,” the mayor said. “He was very nice with everybody he came into contact with.”
The consensus around the courthouse is that Whaley was an effective assessor, with no major issues during his tenure. Though personal matters likely helped usher him out of office, even the man who defeated him in the 1992 election, current Assessor Johnny King, had warm things to say about Whaley.
“Glenn was a hard worker. His whole family was,” King said. “I liked Glenn. There was no bad blood whatsoever on a personal basis. I really hate that his cancer came back on him.”
King pointed to Whaley’s being elected to the job four times as proof of his popularity among local residents.
Whaley’s public service wasn’t limited to county office, though. A veteran of the 25th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army, he served in the Vietnam War.
Whaley graduated from Sevier County High School and the University of Tennessee, and was a member of Maples Branch Baptist Church and the Gatlinburg Elks Lodge. He spent seven years in the Highway Department, working for current Superintendent Jonas Smelcer, who is a pallbearer.
Whaley is remembered by family and friends as an avid sports fan who enjoyed traveling, according to the obituary inside today’s paper. He is survived by his wife Brenda and four brothers, among others.
The family is set to receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, with memorial services following, all in Atchley Funeral Home’s West Chapel. The Revs. Ben Whitted and W.A. Galyon will officiate, with a eulogy given by Sanders Whaley. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Bethel Cemetery, with military honors provided by American Legion Post 104.
