August 17, 1924 - September 30, 2014
Resided in Sevierville, TN
Arthur Ernest Hatcher, Sr, age 90 of Wears Valley, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at UT Medical Center on Tuesday, September 30, 2014.
He was born on August 17, 1924 in Wears Valley and at the age of 5 years began working on the family farm and attended school as much as time allowed. He joined the US Navy at the age of 17 and served until the end of World War II, sailing the South Pacific aboard the USS Weaver DE. After his return from the war he worked at Rails Construction Company and then on July 21, 1951, he married his bride, Betty Ruth Lawson and they both worked at Camel Manufacturing Company, making tents for the US Government. In 1959 he began working at Cherokee Textile Mills where he remained until his retirement in 1989.
He was a hard worker who provided well for his family, he was an avid baseball fan – especially the Atlanta Braves, he was a story-teller like no other, and he enjoyed drying fruit and gardening until the time of his death. He loved his family, his children, and his grandchildren, who were the apples of his eye. The most important love of his life was his Savior, Jesus Christ. He was a faithful member of Valley View Baptist Church and he was the first deacon to be ordained at Covemont Baptist Church on December 22, 1956.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ruth Lawson Hatcher, his parents, Walter and Alice Hatcher, his brothers, John, Frank, Broade and Avery, and his sisters Ella, Myrtle, Mary and Eula Mae.
He is survived by:
Daughters: Kathy Ogle and husband Dale; and Lesa Hatcher and husband Jeff
Son: Arthur Hatcher, Jr. and wife Sheila
Grandchildren: Michael Ogle, Tara Grissom and husband Cletus, Lauren Hatcher, Morgan Hatcher, Sandra Krieger and J.J. Krieger
