GOAN, BEULAH VERYL (BREEDEN) - age 93, of Knoxville, departed this life on June 3, 2011 at Halls Mercy Residential Hospice. Beulah was a descendent of late 18th and early 19th century pioneers who settled at Greenbrier, now a part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Sevier County. She was born near Gatlinburg on July 16, 1917 and was a graduate of Smoky Mountain Academy. She attended Knoxville Business College. She and her husband, Charles, operated Charlie's Café on Sevier Avenue in South Knoxville for 37 years until retirement in 1976. She was a member of South Knoxville Baptist Church for more than 74 years where she taught for several years in the Children's Department. She was an active member of Shekinah Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, where she served as Worthy Matron, as well as other offices of Eastern Star. Beulah was a loving, caring homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, known for her kind compassionate nature to give more than receive. She especially enjoyed being outdoors and working in her gardens. Preceded in death by parents, Penelope (Neppie) and Fletcher Breeden; daughter, Patricia Underwood; sisters, Reba Watson and Cecil Proffitt; brothers, John Caton, Grady and Clay Breeden. Survived by husband of 73 years, Charles Willis Goan; son, Charles William Goan; granddaughter, Angela Heath (Kevin); great-grandchildren, Kayleigh and Alexia Heath; son-in-law, Ronald Underwood (Carol); many nieces and nephews; and special nieces, Nora Wilson, Dorothy Davis and Helen Oakes. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses and assistants at Holston Health and Rehabilitation Center, Mercy Medical Center, St. Mary's, and Halls Mercy Residential Hospice for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to South Knoxville Church, 522 Sevier Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37920, or to a charity of your choice. The family will receive friends Sunday, June 5, 2011 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at South Knoxville Baptist Church, with the service to follow at 7:00 p.m. Dr. Glenn Sullivan and Dr. James G. McCluskey will officiate. Interment will held at Highland Memorial Cemetery, Kingston Pike, at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 6, 2011. Pallbearers will be Kevin Heath, Jess Terry, Larry Hubbs, Blain Rule, Paul Caton and Ted Helms. Condolences may be offered at www.berryfuneralhome.com.
