Community members recall businessman Jim Johnson
Jim Johnson, who passed away on Sunday of brain cancer, just weeks after being diagnosed, had a great impact in the community. He touched the many lives through his years of charitable work, and church and his business endeavors. He and would have turned 79 on Saturday.
Johnson was chairman of the steering committee for the Sevier County Food Ministry and a regular at First Baptist Church of Gatlinburg, as well as a long-time businessman and hotelier in Gatlinburg. He owned Johnson's Drive In and Johnson's Inn Motel, and he owned and operated Dudley Creek Campground for more than 25 years.
"Jim was a very kind man who was very conscientious of people around him, and he had a lot of great friends. He was loyal to a lot of people," Jim Davis, director of Sevier County Food Ministry said. "He had health problems off and on, but he dealt with them and they never slowed him down."
Johnson was first involved with the food ministry in 2000, and by 2005 he was the chairman of the steering committee. Monday marked exactly two weeks since the day Johnson was diagnosed with brain cancer.
"For a while he had to have an oxygen tank with him everywhere he went," Davis said. "That takes a lot of dedication, because he did not stop. He was out here like nothing was wrong. Every day he would want to know what's going on at the food ministries. It was one of his passions."
Another of Johnson's passions was his faith. He was a fixture at First Baptist. "He was a deacon in this congregation for a long, long time," Pastor Larry Burcham said. "He was an usher, or a greeter. People came in the front door and, for years and years, Jim Johnson was one of the first faces you saw. That's one of the tough things around here, coming in that front door and Jim not standing there."
Burcham said that Johnson was a great example of what it means to be a Christian.
"He encouraged people," Burcham said. "He was the kind of guy that people turned to for advice, especially young people. Around here, he'll be remembered as a faithful member of this church. He did a lot in our church and did a lot of work outside the church. He showed people that Christian life is more than just coming to church on Sundays; he put his faith into practice."
Businessman David Ogle worked for Johnson in the early 1970s. Ogle said he owes everything he has accomplished to Johnson.
"It's a tragic loss for our community and for Sevier County," Ogle said. "He gave me my first job, and I probably learned more in those two years about business than I have since then. And I have done a lot of business. He was just such a good person, mentor and businessman. I was in my teens and he trained me and taught me everything from marketing and salesmanship, how to manage business, to how to unstop sewers. He taught it all."
Ogle said that, given everything he did for the community, Johnson can't be replaced.
"Jim was a great, great man, and a good role model," Ogle said. "He was a really good person that I'm going to miss a lot, as well as a lot of other people. Jim liked to have fun and play jokes, and he had a good personality. Everybody liked Jim and warmed up to him. Any time you lose someone that helped so many people, it leaves a vacuum. He served the lord in the very best way that you can: help those that need it the most and really have the least."
Davis said he believes Johnson was at peace when he passed. "He was ready to go," Davis said. "He had done his mission on Earth."
