A Seymour man heading home from Sevierville on Boyds Creek Highway Sunday evening collided with a van and sustained serious injuries
A retired nurse who was on her porch just a 100 feet away heard the impact, turned and saw the accident told her husband to call 911 and quickly headed for the wreck.
According to reports, she went to the scene and assisted Gibson.
David Caulfield, a retired fire marshal form Florida drove up on the accident and instructed others on the phone with 911 to dispatch LifeStar right away as he observed the seriousness of the injuries Gibson had received.
"I drove up on the wreck and told the folks that were on the phone with 911 to have them dispatch LifeStar," Caulfield told the Seymour Herald.
According to Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Sandra Massengill, Larry Gibson, 48, was traveling west on Boyds Creek Highway when his 1996 Harley Davidson Fat Boy motorcycle collided with a 1999 Chrysler van. The van was driven by Gary Bowlin, 54, of Seymour. Bowlin, who was traveling east, apparently turned in front of Gibson.
"Bowlin was trying to turn left onto Triple Crown Wary and he said he just didn't see (Gibson)," Massengill said.
Emergency officials were on the accident shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday. Gibson was airlifted from the scene to UT Hospital, while Bowlin did not sustained any serious injuries.
Boyds Creek Highway was closed for more than an hour as officials worked to find a landing zone for the helicopter and clean up the wreck. Neither driver was charged in the incident.
Gibson's parents, Darrel and Mary Gibson told the Seymour Herald the first they heard about the wreck was from a friend the next morning. Darryl Gibson was a former Justice of the Peace in Sevier County.
"We got a call Monday morning from a friend of ours inquiring about Larry's accident," Darrel Gibson told the Seymour Herald.
"We had no idea what he was talking about. We didn't receive a call from THP or anyone telling us that our son was in critical condition at the hospital. It was a real shock that I had to hear about this from my friend who told me she saw it on the news or read it on the Seymour Herald website."
According to Larry's father, as of Tuesday Larry is back in the intensive care unit.
Many of the local racing fans would know Larry by his NO 83 race car he drove.
