Winfred Ketner West , age 93 of Maryville and Alcoa, a former manager of the Blount Electric System passed away on Tuesday, December 2, 2003. He was born in Dayton, TN on April 17, 1910, the eldest son of George Henry West and Della May ( Ketner ) West . As the son of an attorney there, he had attended the Scope's ''Monkey'' Trial and was the last surviving attendee. He obtained the B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, managed White Store grocery stores in both Knoxville and Maryville, and then worked as Operating Superintendent and Manager for Blount Electric System in Alcoa for 35 years. He was an avid student of the Bible and served as Presidents and Teachers of Sunday school classes at United Methodist Churches in both Maryville and Alcoa. He was a long-time member of the Alcoa Rotary Club serving as President and for 18 years as Secretary. He is remembered by most as one of the nicest gentlemen you would ever meet. He was preceded in death by his sister, Arbutus Nixon and her husband Howard, and his brother-in-law, Neubert Reagan.
Survivors include: wife, Zelpha Ellen (Tiny) Reagan West of 69 years; sons, L. Elwood West and Larry K. West , Larry's wife Diane, their son, William T.K. West and his wife Athena, and their daughter J. Rachel West , Winfred 's great-granddaughter. Other survivors are his brother, Homer West and wife Jo, their family including 3 nephews, the family members of his deceased sister Arbutus including 2 nephews and a niece, and all of their respective families, and his in-laws including Tiny's surviving brothers and sister and their respective families.
Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 4, 2003 in the Trinity Chapel of Smith Mortuary with Rev. Joe Green officiating. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to: Alcoa Methodist Church, 617 Gilbert Street, Alcoa, TN 37701.
