August 2, 1931 - January 10, 2016
Resided in Gatlinburg, TN
Alfred Edwin (Al) Ogden of Gatlinburg passed away January 10, 2016, after a valiant struggle with Parkinson's disease. Al was born August 2, 1931, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended local public schools and Pennsylvania State University.
After serving 4 years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, Al started his professional career as an engineer with the Weigand Co., a company that manufactured electric heating elements. In 1955, Al was sent to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, to help oversee the building and startup of a subsidiary plant, Chromalox, Inc. And so a lifelong love affair with the South began for this Yankee. In 1957, he met his true love, June McCarter, and a year and a half later, they were married in Gatlinburg. They had two special daughters, Lydia and Allison, to whom Al was an extraordinary father. In 1981, he was named Father of the Year in Williamson County, Tennessee.
Following a career move to Stillman Manufacturing in New York as Vice President, Al again was given the responsibility to build and start up a subsidiary plant, this time in Cookeville, Tennessee. Since he couldn't be in New York and Tennessee at the same time, he hired his brother-in-law, Joel McCarter, to be his eyes and ears in Cookeville. Together, they successfully launched Teledyne-Stillman. Given his track record, he was given the opportunity, with a partner, to start his own company, Precision Tubular Heater Corporation, located in Franklin, Tennessee, which he proudly and successfully served as President for 27 years.
After his retirement in 2000, Al fulfilled a promise he made to his new bride so many years prior, and brought her home to their beloved mountains, where they enjoyed many years of gardening together, watching every sport imaginable, traveling far and wide – and always coming home. He was the family's authority on sports trivia, baseball in particular, and had an encyclopedic knowledge of arcane rules and the lore of the game. He also loved music of all types, from bluegrass to opera. He was especially proud that his cherished grandsons were named for baseball players and a musician. He was the master of terrible puns and silly jokes, and delighted in torturing anyone he could with both.
Al was preceded in death by his treasured daughter Allison; his parents, Edwin Richard Ogden and Esther Kleber Ogden; June's parents, Curtis and Pearl McCarter; brothers-in-law Elder, Harmon, and Fred McCarter; and sister-in-law Gerry McCarter.
Survived by his adored wife of more than 56 years, and faithful caregiver, June McCarter Ogden; daughter Lydia Ogden and son-in-law, Jim Buehler; grandsons (who were his pride and joy), Branch Robinson Buehler and Guthrie Ogden Buehler; sister, Donna Ogden; brothers-in-law Marvin and Joel McCarter; sisters-in-law Edna Headrick, Joyce McCarter, Aileen McCarter, Freda Watson and her husband, Clayton Watson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He took great joy in his extended family.
The family will receive friends from 3-4:30 PM Wednesday, January 13, 2016, at Atchley Funeral Home in Sevierville, with funeral services to follow, conducted by Reverend Larry Burcham and Dale Stevens with special music by MaryAnn Trentham and Branch Buehler. Family and friends are asked to meet at Middle Creek Cemetery at 10AM Thursday, January 14.
Active pallbearers are grandson Branch Buehler and nephews Barry McCarter, Craig Trentham, Randy Watson, Pete McCarter, and Kevin McCarter. Honorary pallbearers are devoted son-in-law Jim Buehler, grandson Guthrie Buehler, and nephews John Kerr, Steven Vananda, Barry Jinks, Jeff McCarter, Eric McCoy, Brandon McCarter, and Dwight McCarter.
The family would like to express special gratitude to the caring staff of the Pigeon Forge Care and Rehabilitation Center, who so lovingly tended to Al – and the rest of us – as his life journey ended.
The family requests no flowers. Instead, donations can be made to the following or the church or charity of your choice: The Arc of Tennessee, 545 Mainstream Drive, Suite 100, Nashville, TN 37228-1213 or Special Olympics, 1133 19th Street NW, 12th Floor, Washington, DC 20036-3604.
