Marvin McCarter, 89, of Gatlinburg, was born in the Sugarlands on October 21, 1927. After the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, he and his family moved to Roaring Fork in the spring of 1931. Marvin later moved his growing family to Beech Branch in the summer of 1964 and has moved on to a better place Wednesday, July 19, 2017.
He served as an MP in the United States Air Force during the 1950's, and owned and operated McCarter's Riding Stables for many years. Marvin was a master horseman and outdoorsman who loved the mountains, farming, and his family. He was a man of wit, keen intellect, incredible work ethic and honor, who provided a positive role model for everyone. Marvin always advised his children, "If you don't have everything you want, and you don't have everything you want paid for, you should never pass up an opportunity to work."
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Geraldine "Jerry" Fox McCarter; son, Marvin David McCarter; grandson, Charles Jared Tenney; parents, Curtis and Pearl Ogle McCarter; brothers, Elder, Harmon, Fred, and R.L. McCarter; infant sister, Irene McCarter; brothers-in-law, Carl Headrick, and Al Ogden; nieces, Jennifer McCarter and Alison Ogden; and nephew, Steven Ogle.
Marvin is survived by his children, Pete (Melanie) McCarter, Dwight (Rita) McCarter, Karen (Barry) Jinks, Leslie (Patrick) Tenney, and Kevin (Lisa) McCarter; grandchildren, Jamie Tenney, Jacob Tenney, Jesse (Elizabeth) Tenney, Kurtis (Abigail) McCarter, and Chris (Andrea) Jinks; great-grandchildren, Shade Tenney, Daylan Tenney, Elliot Tenney, Oliver Tenney, Asher McCarter, Crystal Jinks, Cameron Jinks, Savannah Jinks, Kaylee Reed, Michael Reed, Hunter James; sisters, Edna Headrick, Freida (Clayton) Watson, and June Ogden; brother, Joel McCarter; sisters-in-law, Aileen McCarter and Joyce McCarter; brothers-in-law, Jack Fox and Wayne C. Fox; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, and extended loving family members; and long-time family friend, Frank Moore.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Gideon's International, P.O. Box 955, Pigeon Forge, TN 37868, Sevier County Food Ministries, 890 Old Knoxville Hwy, Sevierville, TN 37862, or a charity of your choice.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6:45 PM Friday, July 21st with the service to follow at 7 PM in the West Chapel. Rev. Rusty Maples will be officiating. Family and friends will leave at 10 AM Saturday from Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville to Middle Creek Cemetery for the graveside service and interment. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post #104.
