Mr. James McMahan "Jim" Tarwater, 88, of Ijamsville, Maryland, formerly of Rockville, Maryland, and Richmond, Virginia, died Monday, April 3, 2006 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was husband of the late Margaret Elizabeth "Libby" Tarwater who died August 11, 2004. They were married 60 years. Born December 11, 1917 in Sevier County, Tennessee, he was a son of the late Matthew Atkin and Ida-Mae McMahan Tarwater. Mr. Tarwater graduated Sevier County High School, and he attended T.P.I. College. He went on to serve 20 years in the U. S. Navy, serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. When he retired in 1964, he was stationed at the U.S. National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. After retirement he worked for Lockharts Carpet from 1966 to 1969, manager of the Rockville Duron Paint Store from 1970 to 1976, and Pulte Home Builders from 1977 to 1981. He enjoyed hunting in Pennsylvania with his friends, Ray Barkley, Mike Fetsco and Monte McClain. Surviving him are two children, Brenda F. (Bobbie) Voltaggio and her husband, William F. (Frank) Voltaggio, of Ijamsville, Maryland and James Michael Tarwater and his wife, Nadine C. Tarwater, of Laytonsville, Maryland; one sister, Stella M. Gregory of Greensboro, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Kathleen M. Wal and husband, Mark C. Wal, of Adamstown, William F. (J.R.) Voltaggio Jr., of Denver, Colorado, Cassie J. Grant of Keedysville, Alan J. Tarwater, of College Park, Christine C. Tarwater and Alexandra F. Tarwater, both of Laytonsville; and three great-grandchildren, Ethan C. Wal and Samantha E. Wal, both of Adamstown, and Hailey E. Grant of Keedysville. He will also be remembered by a special friend, Phillip Shepherd of Richmond, Virginia. Mr. Tarwater was preceded in death by brothers, William Herman Tarwater and Walter Bates Tarwater; and sisters, Louise Wilson and Asa Holland Gentry. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus, Maryland. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, April 6, at the funeral home. Pastor Tim May of the Pleasant View Church of the Brethren will officiate. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Frederick, Maryland with military honors.
