Arthur James Gilliam Sr., 92, of Spring City, died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Spring City Care Center.
Mr. Gilliam was the father of Joseph Waterhouse Gilliam of Oak Ridge.
He worked as a painter for Union Carbide Nuclear Division for 27 years and for 19 years with the Tennessee Highway Department.
A lifelong resident of Spring City, he was the son of Richard Waterhouse and Ada Filyaw Gilliam, now deceased.
He was a member and Sunday school teacher at Foursquare Gospel Church in Spring City. A son, John Douglas Gilliam, also died earlier.
In addition to his local son, Mr. Gilliam is survived by his wife of 73 years, Della Mae Garner Gilliam; two other sons, Arthur J. Gilliam Jr. and Lewis Edward Gilliam, both of Spring City; and five daughters, Charlotte Frances Thurman and Judy Gail Dillard, both of Spring City, Betty Ann Brady and Jennie Marie Garrison, both of Grandview, and Emmaline Nunley of Harrison.
He is also survived by 29 grandchildren including Barney Gilliam of Abilene, Texas, formerly of Oak Ridge, and Della Conley, James Gilliam, Sue Ogle and Joe Gilliam, all of Oak Ridge; 23 great-grandchildren including Kelly Herbert, Lisa Gilliam, Rachel Conley, Theo Ogle and Chrissy Ogle, all of Oak Ridge, and Janice Gilliam, Jennifer Gilliam and John Gilliam, all of Abilene; three great-great-grandchildren including Kasey Herbert and Courtney Herbert, both of Oak Ridge; and by several other relatives.
The funeral was held Saturday, June 24, in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City with the Rev. Ira Frazier officiating. Burial was at Spring City Cemetery.
