Yellow balloon release reunites many of Charley's friends

Twenty-seven yellow balloons sailed briskly into the blue-gray sky over Newport on Wednesday, March 28, as Mom, Christy Ricker, and friends celebrated what would have been the 27th birthday for Charley Marie Sapp, Christy's daughter. She was killed on August 17, 2011, in a highway accident.

The boisterous beginning of March ended like a lamb this week with warming days, no frost, and plenty of color about our hometown thanks to plants in full bloom and dogwoods in time for the Easter weekend.
Last week we took a ride to the new alley, Charley's Alley, in Northport, the alley being named after the late Charley Marie Sapp, who was killed at age 26 in a vehicle accident last August on Highway 411. Her mother, Christy Ricker, told me the story, which I am sharing on how the sign got placed near her Musterfield Road home. And, I will tell you about the unusual event last Wednesday afternoon at Union Cemetery.
A road sign is a constant reminder, unique, and keeps us on course and helps us locate where we are going. The unnamed alley behind Christy's house needed a name and just after Charley's death, Christy pondered how to get it named. City Codes enforcer Mark Robinson happened to be in the alley in January and so she mentioned her plan to Mark. He advised her of the process that included getting permission from all property owners adjacent to the alley. Long-time neighbor Anita Holt, who has lived there for about 45 years, supported the plan. "Her Mom helped raise me," said Christy. Anita's daughter, Brittany Carr, and Charley were best friends. Brittany's daughter, Mariah Thornton, is Charley's Godchild, said Christy and was born March 28, on Charley's 21st birthday. Mariah calls Charley her angel. After all the requests, the neighbors agreed with the alley naming, and Christy went to the E-911 board and got its OK and then to city council in February. This was approved on Valentine's Day. Alderman Kathy Holt sponsored the resolution for Charley's Alley. Before you could spell it, Street Superintendent Ben Hicks was on the project and got the fire department to make the new sign. Everything was falling perfectly in place, even though the fire dept. had been out of sign-making materials for months before the project.
The green Charley's Alley sign catches the sunshine, shimmers in the rain, vibrates in March winds. It is a name on the map. And it "brought some peace to my heart. She wasn't a star or politician. She was my only baby. We will remember her forever."
As an aftermath to the sign placement, Christy and many friends visited Union Cemetery on a windy Wednesday, March 28, to observe what would have been Charley's 27th birthday. I'm guessing there were a couple of dozen folks of all ages to baby-size, and with them were 27 big yellow balloons. After they talked and shared memories about Charley and growing up with her, the extended family moved to the gravesite and released the balloons about 4:30 p.m. The brisk north wind carried the balloons rapidly into the sky and some looked as if they disappeared into low puffy white clouds. There were some tears and happy thoughts, too.
Let me mention the folks I met. Barbara Toby worked with Charley at Brock's Market. Shirley Wise was raised with Christy and Charley at Gregg's Lane and is a member of the Sane family. Cheryl Grooms is a daughter to Dean and Polly Ealy, who are neighbors and attended. Best friends of Christy include Jenny Gray, Terri Agree, Casey Gentry, and all were there for hugs. Terri is a server at Fox & Hounds restaurant. And six-year-old Mariah was there celebrating her 6th birthday. She is Brittany Carr's daughter, Brittany being a best-friend of Charley's. Others I met were Tammy Worex, Tracey Worex, Casey Wise and her children Dexton Wise and Payton Worex. Jenny's daughter Lesley Hedgepath works in County Clerk Jan Butler's office. Tammy Trentham is a longtime friend of Christy's. Kat Hale, Josh Ellison, Misty Schoolcraft, Madison Buckner, Madelyn Buckner and Dustin Giles arrived, too. Once Brittany arrived the brief memorial ceremony began and ended with some temporary goodbyes on the cemetery hillside.
