(April 22, 1926 - February 16, 2016)
Lillian Odean O’Dell, age 89, passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at life Care Center in Greeneville, TN. She was born April 22, 1926 in Parrottsville, TN to Walter L. and Delphine Ottinger. She grew up in a farming family and graduated from Hiawassee College. She taught for a time in a one room school. She later went to work at American Enka. She met and married the love of her life Vergil “Sug” O’Dell. They were married for 57 years until his death on July 26, 2014. Odean was a housewife and an avid maker of sourdough bread. She always shared with her church family and all those many friends who came by to visit. Although never having any children of her own so many came to know her as a “special aunt”. She loved gardening, yard work, and starting flowers from cuttings. Odean was a member of O&S Chapel United Methodist Church where she attended most of her early life. After her marriage she and Sug attended First United Methodist Church in Newport, TN for the remainder of her life. She was always active in the ladies Sunday School class and the church bazaars. Odean is survived by her nieces and nephews: Anne Beeler and Ed, Jamie Horne and Mark. Mike Ottinger and Sharon, Jeff Neas and Teresa, and several great- nieces and great-nephews. And a special thanks to Nettie Harbula who over the past four years has provided compassionate care and kindness. Also thanks to all the other special caregivers who made it possible for her to stay in her home. Many thanks to all to the special friends and neighbors who were always willing to lend a hand and offer encouragement. A graveside service will be held on Friday, February 19, 2016 at 2:00 pm in Union Cemetery, Newport, TN. Rev. Dr. James Bennington and Rev. Marta Cogburn will officiate. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial donations be made to O & S Chapel United Methodist Church, First United Methodist Church Newport, or your favorite charity in honor of Odean.
