NEWPORT—Cocke County Sheriff’s Deputy Tony Whitten reported Thursday that he and Deputy Ron Rice recovered two tombstones off Peach Tree Way.
According to Whitten’s report, an employee of It’s All His Real Estate reported that a headstone was seen lying on the side of Peach Tree Way, against a tree and beside a small stream.
Whitten said that once he and Rice arrived on the scene, another tombstone was also found.
The tombstones appear to have been taken from the graves of Thomas N. Gray, who was born Sept. 20, 1901 and died Oct. 26, 1955, and Robert P. Shelton, who was born Mar. 8, 1911 and died Oct. 4, 1983.
“We will prosecute anyone who steals or vandalizes a tombstone or grave site,” said Cocke County Sheriff Chief Deputy Pat Taylor. “Contact me at the Cocke County Sheriff’s Department at 423-623-6004 with information on the location of the grave site. These stones belong back at a proper grave site.
“Judge Ben Hooper once sent four 18 year-old boys to prison for eight years for vandalizing tombstones and graves,” he said. “The Cocke County Sheriff’s Department, judges, and district attorney’s office will not tolerate someone vandalizing a grave site or tombstone.”
