STATESBORO, GA.--A retired Army colonel, who was a general assignment reporter for The Newport Plain Talk in the 1990s, has died in Georgia.
Col. (retired) James E. (Jim) Handley died Monday, May 11. He was 54. While at the Plain Talk, he rolled out The Plain Talk's first "Race Chaser" edition and wrote "Dialed-In" for sports in addition to covering general news assignments.
A native of Tifton, Ga., Handley was commissioned as an Armor Officer from North Georgia College and State University in June 1978 when he received his Bachelor of Science degree in sociology. He had a military career spanning 15 years on active duty with an additional 15 years in the U.S. Army Reserve.
Having led soldiers for more than 30 years, he served in various leadership positions. For the last 11 years, he worked with Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) programs on the collegiate level. He was assistant professor of military science at Armstrong State University from 2000-2006. For the last three years, he served as Eagle Battalion Executive Officer and freshman instructor at Georgia Southern University.
His military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Achievement Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Parachutist Badge.
He was a member of Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and a member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Survivors include his daughters, Katherine Anne Handley, of Exton, Pa., and Elizabeth Jane Handley, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and his parents, Edward A. and Mildred G. Handley, of Cleveland, Ga. Additional survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, a niece and nephew, an aunt and uncle, and friends.
The memorial service was held Friday in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro. Friends may sign the online guest registry at www.joineranderson.com.
