Woman touched many children's lives
Jeanne C. Jauch ~ 1921-2006
She was well-known throughout the halls of Betsy Ross School in Prospect Heights from 1960 until 1985, when she retired from her work as a secretary.
Jeanne C. Jauch, 85, of Arlington Heights, who died this week, was more than just a secretary at the school.
Linda Graba, Mrs. Jauch's daughter, remembers her mother would go above and beyond the duties of a secretary, and would read stories to the students and grade papers for the teachers.
"She was very efficient and did a lot with her time," she said.
"I remember her telling me that a former student had come in with her child and was surprised to see my mother still working at the school," Graba said.
Hal Jauch, Mrs. Jauch's husband of 65 years, said the school meant a lot to her.
"She loved those kids like her own. She wasn't just a secretary, she was like a mother to those kids," Hal said.
He remembers when he first met his future wife at the First Methodist Church of Glen Ellyn. Hal said the couple married shortly after that on Feb. 22, 1941.
When the couple moved to the Moorings in 1989, Mrs. Jauch served on several committees, including the library committee, and was a treasurer. She would also welcome new people to the community.
"She was a very loving mother and grandmother, and she just loved being able to live near her great-grandson" Linda said.
"She would always make occasions more special. For Easter, you wouldn't just get a cake, you'd get a bunny cake," she said.
A memorial service for Mrs. Jauch will be held at 2 p.m. April 29 at the Southminster Presbyterian Church, 916 E. Central Road, Arlington Heights.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the American Cancer Society, 100 W. Palatine Road, No. 150, Palatine, IL 60067.
