Mary Agnes Cureton Franks, age 94, life-long resident of Newport, passed away Wednesday, February 11, 2009 after an extended illness. She was a graduate of Cocke County High School and Knoxville Business College. She was a legal secretary and executive secretary for 30 years, member of the Newport Business Women’s Club and the Twentieth Century Club. She was an 80 year member of First United Methodist Church; served on numerous church committees; president of her Sunday School Class; member of the church’s Frankie Russell Circle and the Ladies Bible Class. Mrs. Franks was dearly loved by her family and friends. She was a friend and inspiration to many and was loved by all who knew her. Her extended family extends its deep appreciation to her many friends,particularly Gene and Truby Sawyer, who showed great care and kindness in recent years. She was preceded in death by her husband, of 63 years, James S. Franks, Sr.; infant daughter, Elizabeth Franks; parents, J.H. “Pat” and Otta Lee Harper Cureton; a special second mother , Aunt Ethel Cureton; brothers, Bartley, Glen and Ralph Cureton. She is survived by her son, James S. Franks, Jr., of Ocean Springs, Mississippi; nieces, Norma Jean Myers and husband, Freddy Myers, of Newport, Betty Harper, of Newport, Dinese Ottinger of Kansas City, MO, and Sally Woth of Atlanta, GA; nephews, Billy Pat Cureton, of Newport, Douglas Ottinger and his wife Cindy of Detroit, MI; also numerous great nieces, great nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. Saturday Feb. 14, 2009 at the funeral home and from 1-3 pm Sunday, February 15, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church. Funeral services following at 3:00 pm Sunday, with Rev. Rick Spell and Marta Cogburn officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church Youth Program, 212 Washington Ave., Newport, TN 37821.
