Decorating in style: New Caton's Chapel teacher spends summer fixing up her new classroom
by STAN VOIT
When Kelly Arwood was reassigned — at her request — from a Northview second-grade class to a Caton's Chapel third-grade class, she knew she'd need to spend some time over the summer getting her new room ready.
With help from her father, Jerry Loveday, she painted, decorated and hung new posters and visuals. When the 15 children arrived Thursday morning, they entered a new world freshly redone by their new teacher.
"I still had butterflies this morning," said Arwood, a 10-year veteran of the classroom. "Every year you get a new group of kids and face new challenges."
One of those challenges: switching from a second-grade curriculum to a third-grade level of courses. She spent some of the first morning showing the students around the room, pointing out their backpack cubbyholes, the numbers board, the clock with hands to teach them how to tell time, and a rocking chair sure to be used by the teacher to read stories.
Walking the halls was Bill Hatcher, and if anyone knows the hallways of Caton's Chapel, it's this man. He has been principal there for 28 years.
"I'm proud of our teachers," he said. "Our school system has been judged to be Exemplary, and we are ready to face the challenge of staying there. A lot of our teachers spent much of the summer getting ready, and many of them attended training sessions."
Hatcher has three daughters in college, two of whom have plans to be teachers.
Caton's Chapel unveiled new school T-shirts this year, and they were for sale in the office.
