John W. Mitchell graduated from Maryville College with an A. B. degree in 1904,
then took graduate courses in mathematics at the University of Chicago before
he joined the faculty of Texas A. and M. University in 1907. He taught there
for 38 years; at the time of his death he was Professor of Mathematics and had
served for a time as Acting Chairman of that department. He was fond of sports
and an execellent tennis player.

John married Stella Armeda McCulloch 20 Sep 1911, Maryville, Blount County, Tennessee. Stella (daughter of Samuel J. McCulloch and Hetty Caroline McTeer) was born 8 Jun 1885, , Blount County, Tennessee; died 20 Feb 1959, College Station, Texas; was buried Bryan City, Texas. [Group Sheet]
