1. | William Anderson McTeer was born 16 Sep 1843, Blount County, Tennessee; died 7 Nov 1925, Maryville, Blount County, Tennessee; was buried Magnolia Cemetery, Blount County, Tennessee. Notes:
During the Civil War Will A. McTeer served in Company A 3rd Regiment Tennessee
Cavalry U. S. Volunteers; he enlisted 10 August 1862 at Cumberland Gap and was
discharged on 3 August 1865 at Pulaski, Tennessee; at the time of enlistment
he was 6 feet tall with fair complexion, dark hair and blue eyes. On 4 April
1864 he was promoted from private to 2nd Lieutenant, on 19 July 1864 to 1st
Lieutenant and Adjutant, assigned to duties as Acting Assistant
Adjutant-General of the Brigade and then of the Division. Finally he was
commissioned Major in the same regiment.
After the War, Major McTeer was a lawyer in Maryville, where he held many
public offices, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Blount County, Recorder of the
City of Maryville, and one term in the Tennessee Legislature. He was one of
the organizers and President of the Bank of Maryville, Treasurer of Maryville
College for eighteen years, twenty years United States Commissioner, and thirty
years Superintendant of the Sabbath School of New Providence Presbyterian
Church in Maryville.
It was Major McTeer's effort through personal contacts, Blount County records,
and wide correspondence which resulted in the compilation 1900-1925 of a
manuscript "McTeer Family History," now on deposit in the McClung Collection,
Lawson-McGhee Library, Knoxville, Tennessee.
