    Living in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania in 1880.

    The identity of James Mateer's wife is indicated in a series of deeds filed 17
    April 1866 to dispose of the estate of Maria E. Carmody. On 1 April 1865
    Harriet B. Hoover and Samuel M. Hoover of Carlisle, Dorothy F. Carmody and D.
    J. Carmody of Mechanicsburg, Priscilla L. Colestock and Z. A. Colestock of
    Cumberland County, Kate J. Seiver and Henry S. Seiver of Chambersburg, for $825
    conveyed to Amelia H. Mateer of Mechanicsburg, a lot in Mechanicsburg on the
    south side of Main Street; this lot was conveyed on 23 February 1853 to Maria
    E. Carmody who died intestate on 9 February 1865 leaving as survivors her
    heirs-at-law, Harriet B. Hoover, Amelia H. Mateer widow, Priscilla L.
    Colestock, Dorothy Carmody, David J. Carmody and Kate Seiver. On 31 March 1868
    Amelia H. Mateer sold this lot to William C. Houser and wife Annie V. Houser
    for $2000.

    In the 1850 census James Mateer Jr. aged 39 years was listed as a farmer in
    Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County; his wife Amelia was aged 26 with
    children Saray (sic) aged 3, Priscilla aged 2 and John D. aged 9 months.

    In 1860 A. Mateer aged 34 years was listed as a milliner in Mechanicburg,
    Pennsylvania; her household included two daughters, L. E. aged 13 and P. C.
    aged 12, also two sons, J. D. aged 10 and J. C. aged 8 years.

    On 17 March 1863 in connection with the estate settlement of John Mateer, a
    guardian William R. Gorgas, was appointed for John D. and James C. Mateer,
    minors under 14 years, on petition of Amelia H. Mateer, and of Laura E. and
    Priscilla C. Mateer over 14 Years at their own request; all four minors were
    described as children of James Mateer deceased "lately of the City of
    Harrisburg." On 22 December 1863 A. H. Mateer, widow of James Mateer late of
    Lower Allen Township, deceased, petitioned the court for a distribution from
    the estate for her daughter Laura E. Mateer now 17 years old, residing in
    Mechanicsburg with her mother "who supports herself there as a mantua maker."
    Since William R. Gorgas Esquire guardian of the said Laura has on hand $213, and
    more is expected from the estate of Laura's grandfather, John Mateer Sr., late
    of Newville deceased, the petitioner requests a release now of $100 "to further
    her daughter's education."

    In the 1880 census of Mechanicsburg, Amelia H. Mateer aged 56 years was listed
    as proprietor of a millinery store; the only other resident in her household
    was her daughter Laura E. Mateer aged 30 (sic), a clerk in the store.

    On 1 April 1868 Laura Mateer signed a release and receipt for $170 from her
    guardian William R. Gorgas.

    In the 1850 census James Mateer Jr. aged 39 years was listed as a farmer in
    Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County; his wife Amelia was aged 26 with
    children Saray (sic) aged 3, Priscilla aged 2 and John D. aged 9 months.

    In 1860 A. Mateer aged 34 years was listed as a milliner in Mechanicburg,
    Pennsylvania; her household included two daughters, L. E. aged 13 and P. C.
