    The identity of James Mateer's wife is indicated in a series of deeds filed 17
    April 1866 to dispose of the estate of Maria E. Carmody. On 1 April 1865
    Harriet B. Hoover and Samuel M. Hoover of Carlisle, Dorothy F. Carmody and D.
    J. Carmody of Mechanicsburg, Priscilla L. Colestock and Z. A. Colestock of
    Cumberland County, Kate J. Seiver and Henry S. Seiver of Chambersburg, for $825
    conveyed to Amelia H. Mateer of Mechanicsburg, a lot in Mechanicsburg on the
    south side of Main Street; this lot was conveyed on 23 February 1853 to Maria
    E. Carmody who died intestate on 9 February 1865 leaving as survivors her
    heirs-at-law, Harriet B. Hoover, Amelia H. Mateer widow, Priscilla L.
    Colestock, Dorothy Carmody, David J. Carmody and Kate Seiver. On 31 March 1868
    Amelia H. Mateer sold this lot to William C. Houser and wife Annie V. Houser
    for $2000.

    In the 1850 census James Mateer Jr. aged 39 years was listed as a farmer in
    Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County; his wife Amelia was aged 26 with
    children Saray (sic) aged 3, Priscilla aged 2 and John D. aged 9 months.

    In 1860 A. Mateer aged 34 years was listed as a milliner in Mechanicburg,
    Pennsylvania; her household included two daughters, L. E. aged 13 and P. C.
    aged 12, also two sons, J. D. aged 10 and J. C. aged 8 years.

    On 17 March 1863 in connection with the estate settlement of John Mateer, a
    guardian William R. Gorgas, was appointed for John D. and James C. Mateer,
    minors under 14 years, on petition of Amelia H. Mateer, and of Laura E. and
    Priscilla C. Mateer over 14 Years at their own request; all four minors were
    described as children of James Mateer deceased "lately of the City of
    Harrisburg." On 22 December 1863 A. H. Mateer, widow of James Mateer late of
    Lower Allen Township, deceased, petitioned the court for a distribution from
    the estate for her daughter Laura E. Mateer now 17 years old, residing in
    Mechanicsburg with her mother "who supports herself there as a mantua maker."Since William R. Gorgas Esquire guardian of the said Laura has on hand $213, and
    more is expected from the estate of Laura's grandfather, John Mateer Sr., late
    of Newville deceased, the petitioner requests a release now of $100 "to further
    her daughter's education."

    In the 1880 census of Mechanicsburg, Amelia H. Mateer aged 56 years was listed
    as proprietor of a millinery store; the only other resident in her household
    was her daughter Laura E. Mateer aged 30 (sic), a clerk in the store.

    The identity of William Montgomery Mateer's wife is indicated in the will of
    her brother, Edminston Johnson of Shippensburg, written 14 January 1859,
    probated 11 February 1859, which bequeathed $300 to his nephew George Mateer
    "son of my sister Jane"; $200 to James E. McLane, son of sister Nancy; all
    remaining estate in four equal shares, one to each of two nephews, George V.
    Johnson and John E. Johnson, one to niece Margaret Harper, and one to the
    parents of these children, brother John Johnson and wife Amanda. Executor:
    John Johnson. Witnesses: Alex Stewart, James Mackey.

    One Montgomery Mateer was admitted to membership at Silver Spring Church on 8
    December 1831, but this member is reported to have died in 1836.

    The vital records file at the Pennsylvania State Libarary lists the marriage on
    1 January 1839 of William M. Mateer, "merchant of Leesburg" (a village in
    Cumberland County, Pennsylvania four miles east of Shippensburg) to Miss Jane
    D. Johnson "of Franklin County."

    In the 1850 census William Matteer was living in Carlisle, Pennsylvania; he was
    aged 37 years with wife Jane aged 34, and sons John aged 10, William aged 8,
    Robert aged 5 and George aged one year.

    In his death notice which appeared 4 February 1858 in the "American Volunteer"
    published at Carlisle this decendent was described as Colonel William M. Mateer
    who died in Allen Township Saturday last after a short illness aged 46 years.
    On 18 February 1858 Robert G. Young was appointed Administrator of the Estate
    of William M. Mateer of Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County. Bond was set
    at $400 with Jas. Saunders and E. Carman as sureties.

    On 22 March 1859 William J. Mateer and John E. Mateer, minors over 14 years
    children of William M. Mateer, petitioned for George V. Johnson as their
    guardian. On 28 August 1865 George O. Mateer, minor over 14 years, child of
    William M. Mateer, petitioned for a guardian because of moneys due him from the
    estates of his grandfather John Mateer deceased and of his uncle Edmundson
    Johnson deceased. John C. Dunlop, the Guardian so appointed, immediately asked
    for and was granted on 28 August 1865 a suitable allowance (not to exceed $200)
    for the support and education of his ward. According to notes kept by Horace
    N. Mateer there was also a daughter in this family who married William McClain.

    During the Civil War William J. Mateer served from 6 August 1862 until his
    discharge at Harrisburg on 21 May 1863 in Company E 130th Regiment Pennsylvania
    Infantry Volunteers. From 11 April 1864 when he enlisted at Chambersburg,
    Pennsylvania, until 23 August 1865 he served in the U. S. Signal Corps. On 16
    July 1890 when he first applied for an invalid pension (because he had lost a
    part of his right foot, though there was no indication that this disablity was
    in any way service connected), William J. Mateer was aged 48 years, a resident
    of St. Louis, Missouri, 5 feet 7 inches tall, with light complexion, dark hair
    and gray eyes.

    Never married.

    Buried in SilverSprings Cemetery.

    Notes:

    In the 1850 census William Matteer was living in Carlisle, Pennsylvania; he was
    aged 37 years with wife Jane aged 34, and sons John aged 10, William aged 8,
    Robert aged 5 and George aged one year.

    During the Civil War Robert Mateer enlisted at Bacon Creek, Kentucky on 13
    February 1862, for three years in Company I 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry; he was
    then a farmer, 18 years old, 5 feet 5 inches in height, with light hair and
    blue eyes. At Dandridge, Tennessee on 16 January 1864 he "was wounded in the
    left ankle ... while in the regular line of duty", which injury rendered him
    "entirely unfit for being a soldier as it is difficult for him to either walk
    or ride." His disability discharge certificate, dated 29 December 1864 "near
    Savannah, Georgia" lists his home address as Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. After
    his discharge Robert Mateer was a sometime fiserman; he moved from place to
    place living in, besides Pennsylvania, Sacramento, Los Angeles and Long Beach,
    California, National Soldiers Home, Montgomery County, Ohio, in 1922, and
    National Soldiers Home, Hampton, Virginia.

    Robert Mateer died in the National Soldiers Home and is buried in the National
    Cemetery.

    In the 1850 census William Matteer was living in Carlisle, Pennsylvania; he was
    aged 37 years with wife Jane aged 34, and sons John aged 10, William aged 8,
    Robert aged 5 and George aged one year.

    In 1860 George Mateer aged 11 years was living in Shippensburg Pennsylvania in
    the household of John and Amanda Johnston; George was listed with personal
    property worth $200.

    During the Civil War George O. Mateer served as drummer in Company C 11th
    Maryland Infantry Volunteers; when he enlisted on 25 October 1864 at Baltimore,
    Maryland, he was listed as a painter aged 16 years. He was discharged 15 June
    1865 at Camp Bradford and reenlisted 21 April 1866 for three years as a private
    in Company H 22nd U. S. Infantry; at that enlistment he was described as aged
    18 1/2 years. 5 feet 2 inches tall, with light complexion, light hair and hazel
    eyes.

    On 23 August 1869 George O. Mateer of Shippensburg, having attained the age of
    21 years, signed a receipt for $300 in U. S. Government bonds (less $31.24 due
    his guardian) and also a release to John O. Saxton and James M. Ralston, as
    Administrators of the Estate of John C. Dunlap "who was my Guardian."

    George Mateer's later residences were various: Newville, Pennsylvania, one
    year; Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, one year; Missouri, one year; Texas, one
    year; Kansas; Illinois, six years (1880); Minnesota, three years; Moscow,
    Idaho, twenty-three years (1890); Los Angeles, California, seven years (1902).

    George separated from his wife before 29 March 1915.
