James McTeer

Notes:

"James McTeer came from County Down Ireland with a wife and a number of
children, the voyage was made in the old sailing vessel, requiring a great
length of time. An epidemic broke out on board the ship. He saw one child,
then another, and at last his wife's body lowered into the watery grave. His
grief was such that the convulsions caused such upheavals of the breast, that
the buttons were torn from his silk satin vest."

Sometime about 1730 James McTeer left Northern Ireland with a wife and family.
On shipboard his children fell ill and died one by one, then his wife succumbed
also; so the grief-stricken young man arrived alone in Pennsylvania. This same
traditional has been handed down from generation to generation in both
Tennessee and Ohio. Though the story is essentially the same in both branches,
the number, sex, and names of the children vary, and no one has presumed to
suggest a name or identity for this first wife.

On 16 Jan. 1746/1747 James McTeer took out a tract of land in East Pennsboro
Twp., Lancaster Co., 304 acres 120 perches on Warrant #117; on 8 Nov. 1760 he
took out two additional adjoining tracts containing 72.5 and 37.5 acres, which
additions were described in the survey as "but thin and ordinary land." At the
time of the first survey on 10 Nov 1760, the land was in East Pennsboro Twp.,
Cumberland Co. and the abutting property owners were Anthony McCue, James
McMeen, Peter Leester and Rowlan Chambers. On 13 May 1767 James took out still
another 70 acres southeast of the preceding tract and abutting on Yellow
Breaches Creek; this land was not surveyed until much later, but is mentioned
in James' will as "warrant land."

This homestead was successively in East Pennsboro Twp., Lancaster Co., until
the formation of Cumberland County in 1750; then in East Pennsboro Twp.,
Cumberland Co., until 1766, when Allen Township was formed. When Allen
Township was divided in 1850 the McTeer land fell in Lower Allen, "on the road
from Lisburn to Silver Spring Meeting House."

In relatively modern terms the location is between St. Johns Road on the east,
Slate Hill on the south, the Upper-Lower Allen Township line on the west, and
another range of hills on the north. Identification of exact landmarks within
the area has been singularly complicated because the property is now traversed
by the Lisburn Road, the Reading Railroad, The Pennsylvania Turnpike, as well
as by other local roads coming from New Cumberland on the east and proceeding
southward to Fairview Twp., York Co. across Yellow Breaches Creek.

Soon after completing his title to the property with a patent dated 11 Nov.
1760, James McTeer built a store house near a large flowing spring, probably at
about the point where Lisburn Road crosses Cedar Run. A Cumberland Co. map of
the 1860s shows at that time seven houses on what had been the original McTeer
grant; owners along the southern border were C. Musselman and John Strong, who
had two Dwellings, one at the junction where Lisburn Road came in from the
south; then on Lisburn Road going north again after the jog, James Dunlap had
two houses; David Hurst was still further north but somewhat west of the
roadway; at last an unidentified building was located east against the hill.

Records of the Pennsylvania Direct Tax of 1798 for Allen Twp., Cumberland Co.,
list James McTeer's original house then owned and occupied by his son
Samuel McTeer, as a stone dwelling, 16 by 22 feet, one story with four windows
containing 48 lights (panes of glass); the accompanying kitchen was shown as
an outbuilding 16 by 12 feet with two windows containing 12 lights; and the
whole property including two acres of land was valued at $600.

When Major Will A. McTeer of Maryville, Tenn., visited the locality a century
later this house was still standing and still owned by a McTeer descendant,
Mrs. Ellen Saxton. The Major wrote his impressions in a letter from
Mechanicsburg, dated 30 July 1898; "We got here last night. A beautiful town of
five thousand inhabitants, nestled down in the richest and loveliest little
valley I have ever seen. I am just now back from a visit to the old homestead
of my great, great grandfather, four miles out. The main part of the old stone
house is still standing but very old and dilapidated. The old farm is of the
very best. A barn as big as Texas ... filled ... with oats by the six horse
load. I drank from the old spring that slaked the thirst of my ancestors."

But only a few weeks after this encounter the old place was torn down; so a
neighboring farmer could use the stones for the foundation of a milk station.
In Mrs. Saxton's words, "It was hard for me to make up my mind to it but
thought it best to lay sentiment aside as it was getting unsightly and useless
and possibly dangerous."

During the French and Indian War James McTeer was a captain in the local
militia. He and his lieutenant John Anderson, both of East Pennsboro Twp. were
commissioned in 1747-1748 in the Associated Regiment of Lancaster Co. Over the
River Susquehanna. By the time of the American Revolution he was well past 70
years and so was not included in any of the militia lists of that time; nor is
there any evidence of his providing other specific assistance to the cause of
Independance. Yet, since his five sons and three sons-in-law all served with
the Pennsylvania troops at various times during the war there can be no doubt
where his sympathies were in that conflict.

Out of his 400 acres James McTeer provided a farm for each of his four sons who
remained in Allen Township. On 8 Dec 1770 "for love and affection" he deeded
100 acres to his son John; on 21 Dec. 1770 he made a similar conveyance to his
son William; and by his will he also gave land to sons James and Samuel. Son
Robert moved to Fermanaugh Twp., Cumberland Co., soon after his marriage and
had already gone on to Tennessee before his father's death. Since he received
in the will only a token legacy, it is clear that Robert had in some way
received his share at an earlier date, but the nature of that inheritance is
now past recovery.

The will of James McTeer Sr. of Allen Twp., Cumberland Co., written 2 Aug.
1764, probated 16 March 1785, bequeathed to son James. "the land he now liveth
on as it is divided by John Creigh", one half "the warranted land adjoining to
be divided according to quantity and quality", also "the meadow that is fenced
off for his use"; to daughter Elizabeth Boyd, five shillings; to son Robert
McTeer, five shillings; to daughter Alce Caruthers, five shillings; to sons
William and John, five shillings each; to daughter Sarah Pauly, five shillings;
to granddaughter Elizabeth, daughter of son James, "my chest of drawers"; to
son James, "my table". Any remainder after payment of the legacies and
expenses from the sale of personal property to be divided between sons James
and Samuel McTeer. They to be Executors. Witnesses: Hugh Laird, John Worden.

An untotalled inventory of the "Goods and Cattels of James McTeer Sen
deceased", made on 26 Feb. 1785 by Hugh Laird and William McMEan, includes only
personal property; one horse at 17 pounds; a red cow with a white face at 4
pounds; seven pewter plates at 14 shillings; a case of drawers willed to
granddaughter Elizabeth 3 pounds 15 shillings; a table willed to son James, 15
shillings; other furniture, table, chair, dough chest, walnut chest
and bedstead totaling 1 pound 2 shillings 6 pennies; two featherbeds, pillows,
coverlets and blankets, 15 pounds 5 shillings and 2 pennies total; wearing
apparel, 2 pounds 10 shillings; old books, 1 pound 1 shilling 6 pennies; a few
tools, flax hackle, pruning chisel and draw knife, 7 shillings 6 pennies; pot
rack, tongs, fire shovel, two basins, spice box and frying pan, 16 shillings; a
buckskin, 10 shillings; "a pair of specks and tobacco box", 2 shillings 6
pennies.

Notes:

During the Revolutionary War James McTeer was a private soldier in October of 1777 in the Third Battalion Cumberland Co. Militia; and on 23 Oct. 1780 he was listed in Capt. Laird's Co.

On 4 Feb. 1793 when militia listed of all male residents of Cumberland Co. between the ages of 18 and 45 was made, two from this family were included, James "Jr." and Robert, then aged 21 years; James Sr. was too old and son John was probably just under eighteen.

In the 1790 census James McTeer was listed in Allen Twp., Cumberland Co., with a household of three males over 16, one younger boy, and three females. In 1800 his household had four males; he was over 45 years with two men 26-45 and one 16-26; there were six females, two 26-45, one 10-16, and three under ten years. The complexion of James' household as shown in these two census records can lead to several interesting suppositions: His wife had probably died between 1790 and 1800; daughter Elizabeth Bailey with her husband and three little girls was probably living with her father in 1880; son John aged 25 accounts for the 16-26 male tally; either son James or son Robert was missing from the family as reported -- probably James, as Robert was identified in October 1800 as "of Allen Township" when he was mentioned in the will of his uncle Samuel McTeer.

According to the records of Pennsylvania Direct Tax of 1798 this James McTeer was then owner and occupant of a frame dwelling in Allen Twp., Cumberland Co.; the main house was 30 by 22 feet, one story, with six windows containing 60 lights; there were two outbuildings, a frame kitchen 16 by 15 feet, and a stone milk house 19 by 16 feet; the whole property including two acres of land was valued at $350.

The will of James McTeer of Allen Twp., written 7 Oct. 1803, probated 19 Oct., mentions his being sick and frail, leaves one-third of his real estate in either Allen Twp. or Juniata Twp. and one-third of his personal estate to his son James, he to pay one-third of the debts and legacies (but if son James should die without lawful issue then his share to go to his brother John); son John to have two-thirds of the real and personal property, he to pay two-thirds of the debts and the following legacies: to Robert an Elizabeth Bailey, ten shillings; to Elizabeth Bailey 4 pounds per year for five years; to granddaughters Margaret, Ann and Jane Bailey 5 pounds each at age 18; to grandson Bailey (unnamed), 5 pounds at age 21. Witnesses: C. Quigley, James McTeer; Executor: John McTeer.

On 1 April 1858 John Mateer of Lower Allen Twp., for $13,888.87 deeded to John Strong of York Co., Penna., a tract containing 194 acres 40 perches located in Lower Allen Twp., Cumberland Co. and bounded by the lands of W. H. Smith, James Dunlap, D. Hurst and C. Musselman, which tract had by sundry conveyances become vested in James McTeer Sr. and by his will was devised one-third to James Mateer Jr. and two-thirds to John Mateer, but now since the Said James Mateer has "died intestate and without issue", John Mateer the present grantor has sole title to the property.

On 1 March 1766 John McTeer took out a warrant for land in Allen Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, adjoining his father's property on the northwest; when the new tract was surveyed on 9 March 1768 there were 37 acres 130 perches, and abutting property owners were Anthony McCue, Alexander Armstrong, Joshia McMeen and James Mcteer; a patent was issued on 12 December 1770.

On 8 December 1770 James McTeer of Allen Township, yeoman, "for love and affection and five shillings" deeded to John McTeer of Allen Township, "son of the said James McTeer", 100 acres in Allen Township, including messuage and tenement, buildings, rents, issues and profits, bounded by land of the said James McTeer but now of William McTeer, being part of a tract patented to James
McTeer on 11 November 1760. Witnesses: Jonathan Hoge, Anthony McCue, William McTeer. Acknowledged 1 December 1770. Recorded 22 December 1775.

During the Revolution in 1777 and again in 1778 John McTeer was chosen captain of the First Company in the Third Battalion of the Cumberland County Militia; in 1781 he was listed as a member of Capt. Thomas Laird's Company.

The will of John McTeer, dated 10 September 1789, probated 9 June 1790, bequeathed to his wife Mary, one-third of the personal estate; to son James, the bed "he now has in Carlisle", bedding and 10 pounds; the remaining two-thirds of the personal estate to be divided equally between the seven youngest children: Samuel Huston, John, Andrew, Alice, Isabel, Mary and Ann. Executors: wife Mary McTeer, Samuel Huston McTeer and John McTeer. Witnesses: William McMeen, Robert McMeen, John Creigh.

The 1790 census of Allen Twp., Cumberland County, lists Mary McTeer as head of a household with four males over sixteen years and four females. On 4 February 1793 when a militia list was made for all male residents of Cumberland County between 18 and 45 years, three from this family were included, James, Samuel H. and John; Andrew was not quite old enough to be listed.

On 1 April 1795 Mary McTeer, Samuel Huston McTeer and John McTeer of Allen Township, "Gentlewoman and yeomen" conveyed to Michael Hurst of Refoo (Rapho) Township Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, for 1700 pounds "in gold or silver coin", two "contiguous" tracts totaling 137 acres 130 perches in Allen Township: one piece of 100 acres granted by "patent" to James McTeer on 11 November 1760 and conveyed by Deed Pool of 8 December 1770 from James to his son John, bounded by lands of the late said James now of William McTeer and by land of Anthony McCue; the second piece of 37 acres 130 perches granted "patent" to John McTeer on 12 December 1770, bounded by James McTeer, Alexander Armstrong. is now dead and by his will has empowered the present grantors, his Executors, to sell the property. Witnesses Henry Quigley, William Bryson, John Thompson. Acknowledged same date. Recorded 5 August 1795.

Notes:

According to the statement of John Lowrie Mateer, William McTeer married second
"a widow who had two husbands, James Grimes or Graham and Thomas Robinson."
Research in Carlisle has produced no deeds or probate for a Thomas Robinson nor
for an appropriate James Graham with a wife Jane. One Thomas Robinson, born
about 1725, son of Philip Robinson, a miller of Hanover Twp., Lancaster Co.,
died childless in 1780 leaving a wife Jane. Thomas' will, written 25 Nov 1780,
probated 4 Jan. 1781, bequeathed one-half his personal property and all the
produce of his plantation to the widow during her widowhood; other bequests
mention three brothers Samuel, George and John Robinson, a brother-in-law
Robert Thompson, a niece Mary Robinson, three nephews named Thomas, and
indentured servant Ann Belson, "to finish out her time with my wife at her
disposing." But there is nothing here to say who this Jane Robinson was before
her marriage nor what became of her after Thomas' death.

On 21 December 1770 James McTeer of Allen Twp., Cumberland Co., conveyed to his
son William McTeer of Allen Twp., yeoman, for "natural love and affection" and
"also for the better support, livelihood and preferment of the said William",
and for 6 pounds, a tract of land bounded by the lands of Antony McQue, John
McTeer and James McTeer, containing 100 acres, part of a larger tract patented
by James Mcteer on 11 Nov. 1760. Witnesses: Jonathan Hoge, Antony Macue, John
McTeer.

During the Revolutionary War William McTeer, like his brothers James, John, and
Samuel, served in the Third Battalion, Cumberland Co. Militia. In September
1777 he was listed as a private in 2nd Class in Capt. John Trindle's Co.; in
August 1780 he was a private in the 6th class in the 3rd Co., under Capt. John
McCormick; and in May 1782 in the 2nd Class in the 5th Co.

In addition a William Mateer, fifer, served under Capt. Thomas L. Moore in the
Third Pennsylvania Regiment; in a list dated 10 Aug. 1778 he was "in hospital".
This man, or another of the same name was a drummer in Capt. Josiah Harmer's
Co. But there is no clear evidence that this musician was, or was not, James'
son.

On 1 April 1779 William Byers (or Buyers) and wife Jean of Cumberland Co., for
334 pounds, conveyed to William McTeer 37 acres in Allen Twp. adjoining lands
of Anthony McQueen, William McTeer, Rowland Chambers, Frederick Swizer.
Witnesses: John McMen, Thomas Laird. On 25 April 1786 Rowland Chambers of
Allen Twp., for 182 pounds 12 shillings, deeded to William McTeer of Allen
Twp., 91 acres 48 perches in Allen Twp., bounded by William McTeer and James
McTeer's line near Lisburn Road (land patented to Chambers on 1 Feb. 1786).
Witnesses: Hugh Laird, Jas. Laird.

According to the records of the Pennsylvania Direct Tax of 1798 for Allen Twp.,
Cumberland Co., William McTeer then owned two one-story frame houses; he lived
in the larger, measuring 25 by 25 feet with four windows containing 14 lights,
with a separate one-story frame kitchen 18 by 16 feet; son Jas. McTeer, lived
in the second house which was 23 by 16 feet with two windows and 18 lights.
Each house with two acres of land adjoining was valued at $300.

William McTeer remained throughout his life a resident of Allen Twp., Cumberland
Co. In 1790 his household there had two males over sixteen years, two males
under sixteen and two females. In 1800 there was one male, one female over 45
years; one male, one female 16-26; and one male aged 10-16 years. In 1810
William Mateer Sr., one male, one female over 45 years, was living next to
William Mateer Jr. In 1820 Jane Mateer aged over 45 years was listed alone in
a separate household next after John Mateer and William Mateer.

On 2 June 1819 William Mateer Sr. and wife Jane (or Jean) of Allen Twp.,
conveyed to James Dunlap and Paul Gehr as Trustees, a lot "on the Great Road
from Lisburn to Silver Springs Meeting House" (part of the land conveyed by
Rowland Chambers on 25 April 1786), consideration $1.00 and "a benevolent wish
to do good, encourage learning and promote religion." Witnesses: John Snyder,
James Mateer. When this deed was filed on 19 April 1838, it was accompanied by
an assignation from the School Trustees to the Directors of Common Schools, and
the property was further described as a schoolhouse in Allen Twp., "known as
Mateer's schoolhouse."

The will of William McTeer of Allen Twp., "being reduced to a weak state of
body", written 23 July 1810, probated 13 Sept. 1819, directs son William to
"Fulfil the covenants and agreements made before my marriage with wife Jane"
out of her share and provide her maintenance; "she shall have full power to
dispose of her wearing apparel as she may think proper"; to son James, the land
he now lives on beginning at the great road from Lisburn village to Silver
Spring, at the east corner of Plumbtree meadow, also 18 acres of the old tract
"whereon I now live", and 234 acres in Harrison Co., Va.; to William, all
residue of the old tract "where I now live", except two fields as above, also
Plumbtree meadow; to son-in-law William Ross and wife Alice, notes worth $300
and 50 pounds; to daughter Jane, 250 pounds in case she marries and has lawful
issue, but only the interest on this sum if she remains single, James to provide
her a home, bed and bedding, case of drawers, dining table and cow. The
Testator left his cane to son James, his watch to son William. Witnesses:

Notes:

Some time in 1804 Robert McTear of Tennessee made a trip back to Pennsylvania to visit his only surviving brother, William in Cumberland Co., and some of his wife's relatives in Mifflin Co. From that journey he brought back a copy of "The Psalms of David in Metre, According to the Version Approved by the Church of Scotland", 1790, by Mr. Mathew Henry; the leather bound book has this inscription: "Presented by William McTeer of Cumberland, Pennsylvania, to his nephew William McTeer in French Broad" (East Tennessee). Robert brought also a small notebook in which he had written the names and birthdates for his brothers and sisters along with his father's deathdate.

Shortly after his marriage, and at about the same time that his father-in-law and brothers-in-law William Boyd and John Pauley took up land in Fermanagh Twp., Cumberland Co., Robert McTeer applied for a tract still farther north on Mahantanga Creek in an area loosely known as Buffalo Valley.

On 13 Aug. 1767 on Application #850 Robert McTear received a warrant for 300 acres bounded on the west by Mahantango, on the north by the Narrows Mountain, on the south by a ridge and on the east by John Harris' Survey. This land as surveyed on 26 Sept. 1767 was located at the head of Mahantanga Creek, and that stream flowed eastward through the length of the property.

There is every indication that Robert and his family moved onto the tract soon after the date of this survey, and he was almost certainly the first settler there. When Northnumberland County was formally organized on 21 March 1772 its southern boundary was defined in part as "the southside of Mahantanga Creek up to the head of Robert Mateer's Spring." In an article on the "Township Names of Old Northumberland County, Their Origin and Meaning", Charles Fisher Snyder describes the first survey of the region, "The Mahantango on the western shore was followed by the surveyors who marked the boundaries of Old Northumberland in 1772 but not quite to its source. In fact they designated a spot known as Meteer's Spring from which a straight line was run in a westerly direction. Local tradition has it that at this early date Robert Meteer had built a stillhouse over the spring using the cooling waters to chill the coils of the still, and it was at this point the early surveyors tarried before striking out across the mountain wilderness."

On 27 May 1776 Christian Graybill of Penns Twp., Northumberland Co. conveyed to John Graybill a warrant for land in Penns Twp., bounded by property of John Simpson and Joseph Sterrat, which warrant John Grabill had taken out in the name of Christian Graybill. Witnesses: Robert McTeear, Joseph Wark. The next day, 28 May 1776, before William Maclay, Robert McTeer "one of the subscribing witnesses made oath on the Holy Evangelists of Almighty God that he was personally present" and saw the signature of Christian Graybill to this document. These Graybills, credited as founders of Richfield, Snyder County, Pennsylvania, were Robert's very near neighbors, as will appear in subsequent litigations over land boundaries.

Apparently the McTeers continued to occupy the property at the head of Mahantango until some time in the fall of 1780, or the spring of 1781, when they left for the Valley of Virginia. Robert Muntier was listed as a resident and taxpayer in Penn Township, Northumberland in 1780, but not in 1781 or thereafter. On 13 Aug. 1780 Robert McTeer deeded to George Pyle his 290 acre
tract "part in Cumberland and part in Northumberland Co., in the Townships of Greenwood and Penn"; however, in order to complete this transaction a re-survey and definition of boundaries was called for; and thereby hangs a tale.

On 2 September 1782 John Graybill sued Robert Mateer "on caveat". This suit was dismissed on the plaintiff's non-appearance. Then on 13 June 1783 John Graybill entered a caveat "against the acceptance of a survey granting a Patent to George Pyle for a Tract of land in Mahonoys in the Counties of Northumberland or Cumberland by virtue of Application No. 850 entered by Robert Mateer." The suit alleged that the said McTeer had a survey made, whereupon the said Graybill obtained a warrant in the names of Peter Graybill for a tract bounding that survey, and that since then the said Mateer or Pyle had made another survey and "thereby extended the lines to include the best part of the land which was the object of Peter Graybill's Warrant." This complaint was still pending on 12 Feb 1794.

Meanwhile on 2 November 1791 Letters of Administration on the Estate of George Pfile were granted in Northumberland Co., to Henery Pfile and John Grable, Frenni (Veronica) Pfile, the widow, having declined to administer the estate. Sureties to the bond: Jacob Echort and George Merkle.

Long afterward four completely new warrants and subsequent patents were issued for the land once include in McTeer's 290 acre property; so it appears that neither McTeer nor Pyle ever had a warrantable title to this land, though they enjoyed possession and paid taxes on the tract for over twenty years. Evidently McTeer sold in good faith, but after the grantor's departure from the Province of Pennsylvania Pyle was unable to complete the transfer of the property or unwilling to fight in the courts for his title.

The Northunberland Co. Tax Lists provide an interesting verification of these land transfers. In a combined list of 1778-1780 for Penn Twp. Robert Muntier was listed with property worth 150 pounds 17 shillings (nature of the assets unspecified), no mention of any Graybill. There is no McTeer listing. In succeeding years 1781-1787, George Pyle is shown as owner of 170, 300, 290, 290, 300, 300 and 150 acres respectively; John Graybill with 119, 120, 120, 120, 350, 100, 100; Christioan Graybill comes on the list in 1781 as a single man, in 1786 and 1787 he owned 100 acres.

The Revolutionary War was still in progress when Robert McTeer left Pennsylvania about 1781, and his participation in that conflict presents a very sticky problem. There is no question that he did expouse the cause of Independence and did his share with the local militia in defense against the British. But because of several peculiarly complicating circumstances it is not possible now to identify, date, and document his service with absolute certainty.

While the Shenandoah Valley may have been Robert's immediate destination when he left his home in Mahantanga (as intimated in his letters), he very shortly went to settle on Cherokee Land in the region of the French Broad River. There he was a pioneer of the central section of East Tennessee; he was one of the leaders in the construction of McTeer's Fort at Ellejoy, Tennessee and built
the first grist mill in that area.

Concerning Robert McTeer's land in Tennessee, Major McTeer says: "My great-grandfather secured a large body of land in this county, first by a grant from North Carolina, which failed to vest title owing to defective legislation, and when the state was vested with authority, he renewed his grant for the greater part from Tennessee, and his descendants are occupying part of the land still."

On 26 Dec. 1791 the State of North Carolina granted to Robert McTeer, 800 acres on Ellejoy Creek, bounded by lands of Benjamin Tipton, J. McKamme and Samuel Bogle, surveyed 19 September 1791 by James McTeer, John McKamme and James W. Luckey on grant #952. The stated purchase price was 10 pounds per 100 acres plus "yearly sum to be determined by the Assembly." This transaction was recorded in Blount County Deeds in May 1807, and entered in North Carolina Land Grants in East Tennessee, where the location was described as in Greene Co., North Carolina.

On 1 October 1809 the State of Tennessee by John Sevier Governor, conveyed to Robert McTeer Sr., 481 acres, in "the tract for academies" in Blount Co., District South of the French Broad and Holston Rivers, surveyed 5 Jun 1807, located on the waters of Ellejoy Creek abutting on property of Joseph Bogle, Robert Murrin and Robert McTeer Jr. The total price of this tract was $281 paid in installments from 12 February 1808 until 12 October 1820.

On 5 October 1809 Robert McTeer obtained from the State of Tennessee a further grant of 114 acres and 15 poles.

A will of Robert McTeer, written 10 December 1823, bequeathed to daughter Margaret Sloan, one-fourth of the Chickasaw Land Warrant, the big chest, one-half of the cattle; to sons James Robert McTeer, each one-fourth of the Chickasaw Land Warrant; to son Martin McTeer, 100 acres "of the plantation I now live on", including the mill and tools belonging thereto, also the hogs; to daughter Janet McTeer, one-fourth of the Chickasaw Land Warrant, one-half the cattle; to son William McTeer, 260 acres of the home plantation, including the old improvement, also the sheep; to granddaughter Agnes McTeer, daughter of son Robert, bed, bedding, coverlet, blankets and pillows she used "when living with me." Executors: sons Martin and William McTeer. Witnesses: Hugh Bogle, Robert Murrin.

On 12 April 1822, not long before his death, the State of Tennessee granted to Robert McTeer "by virtue of Certificate #31 dated 9 July 1808, issued by the Commissioiners for East Tennessee ... and entered on 5 February 1821 by #462", 640 acres in the 9th District in Perry Co., in the 1st and 2nd Ranges, 7th Section.

The implications and location of this grant, the "Chickasaw land Warrant" mentioned in Roert's will, have raised some fundamental questions. In a letter on 9 April 1920 to Rev. Nathan McC.ung of York, N. Y. (a descendant of the Ohio Robert McTeer) Major McTeer writes: "Under purchase and treaty with the Chickasaw Indians the government purchased a large part of the territory in what is now West Tennessee, and land warrants were issued to the Revolutionary veterans in 640 acre tracts, then on the warrants the land was located, and Grants issued for title in full."

The present librarians at the Tennessee State Library are more cautious. Certificates from the Tennessee Land Commissioners were issued for a variety of causes: to redeem military warrants, for evidence of a paid grant, to adjudicate an occupant claim, and in other cases of disputed ownership. While no minutes of the East Tennessee Commission are now available, it is the judgment of Mrs. Cleo A. Hues, Director of the Archives, that Robert McTeer's grant may have represented a land purchase, since no military connection was stated in the warrant.

Possible there was some recognition here of Robert's past services in building and maintaining the fort on Ellejoy throughout the Cherokee Wars, but no mention of such consideration is made on any of he papers found. Tennessee, organized in 1796, contributed no soldiers to the War for Independence, and any payment for Robert's Revoluntinary service would have had to come from the State of Pennsylvania in whose militia he had served.

Finally, the location and disposition of the Chickasaw land is indicated in the following deed: On 28 September 1832 Archibald Sloan and Mames McTeer conveyed to James McWilliams, all of Blount Co., for $360 all their rights in 640 acres located in the name of Robert McTeer in the Wester District in Madison Co., near Mt. Pinson, pursuant to Warrant #31 issued 9 July 1808 by Archibald Roan, surveyed by Samuel Wilson, he to have one-fifth for locating same. The remaining four-fifths were left by the will of Robert McTeer to four children, Margaret Sloan and Janet McTeer being two of these legatees. Whereas William Sloan by his will left the said interest of Margaret Sloan to Archibald Sloan (their son), and whereas the said Janet McTeer is now deceased, now James McTeer, husband of said Janet, and Archibald Sloan (as above) do convey their shares to James McWilliams. In the 1800 census of East Pennsboro Township Elice Carothers aged over 45
years was listed as head of a household which included four males, two 26-45,
one 10-26 and one 0-10; three other females, 16-26, 10-16 and 0-10 years.

The will of Alice Carothers of East Pennsboro Township, written 1 November
1804, probated 17 December 1804, bequeathed to her two sons William and John
Carothers, all her estate and all her rights in the personal estate of her son
James Carothers "lately deceased"; to daughters Mary and Alice, $2.00 each "in
lieu of their share of my estate"; to daughter Jane 150 pounds, two
featherbeds, one case of drawers, tables and a new saddle. Executors: sons
William and John Carothers (and they to pay the legacies). Witnesses: John
Orr, William Orr.

On 8 January 1837 Alice Carothers of Beaver County, Pennsylvania, for $8062,
conveyed 201 acres 88 perches in East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County on
the bank of Conodoquin Creek to Daniel Dietz of York County Pennsylvania.
Alices's title was explained as follows: Whereas William Carothers obtained
this land by patent dated 5 May 1762 and by his will dated 16 November 1762
devised the land to his three sons, William, James and John (he also left three
daughters, Mary, Alice and Jean); "by the death of their brother James and by
divers other assurances" William and John Carothers came to possess the law as
tenants in common until an action of partition on 17 April 1826 gave this tract
to William, who died intestate on 26 March 1829, leaving a widow Mary and a son
John Carothers; said widow died on 6 March 1835 and said John died intestate on
25 May 1835, "leaving neither father nor mother, sister or brother but leaving
an aunt by the father's side, the said Alice Carothers, the present grantor",
and several cousins, the children of deceased aunts and uncles by the father's
side. Thus the patent descended to Alice as "next of kin and heir."
Witnesses: James Clendening, John Ewing. Acknowledged by Alice Carothers in
Beaver County on 28 January 1837. Filed 1 April 1837. The tract described in
this deed includes part of the property now used for Silver Spring Church
Cemetery.

On 10 MAy 1803 Walter Charles and Sarah his wife, "late widow of John Pauley"
entered another petition for inquest and/or partition naming John Pauley's
seven children: John, Thomas and James Pauley, Agnes, wife of Isaac Sellers;
Sarah, wife of Archibald Ewing, Elsey and Elizabeth Pauley. At the inquest
held at the home of Walter Charters of Greenwood Township on 8 September 1803
before William Sterritt Esq., Sheriff of Mifflin County, the jury decided that
the property, a messuage and two adjoining tracts containing 200 acres, could
not be suitably divided, but should be evaluated at $2460. On 30 March 1807
this decision was set aside and a new petition of Walter and Sarah Charters
again named John Pauley's seven children with two new developments: John
Pauley Jr. is dead leaving one daughter for whom Samuel Sharron is appointed
guardian; Elizabeth Pauley is now the wife of Samuel Miller.

During the Revolutionary War Samuel McTeer was enrolled as a private in the
Third Battalion, Cumberland County Militia; in March of 1781 he was called out
on tour of duty with the 8th class in the 4th Company, and in April he was
listed in the 8th class 5th Company under Captain Thomas Laird and Colonel
Samuel Erwin.

In 1790 Samuel McTeer's Allen Township household had one male over sixteen
years, three younger males and three females.

Samuel McTeer, then aged 40 years, on 4 February 1793 was included in a militia
list of all male residents of Cumberland County between the ages of 18 and 45
years, but none of his sons were then old enough to qualify.

The will of Samuel McTeer, farmer of Allen Township, written 18 September 1800,
probated 9 October 1800, bequeathed to wife Rosanna, one-third of all rents and
profits from real estate for her lifetime, choice of horses, her saddle and
bridle, bed and bedding, choice of cows, chest of drawers, tea table and
one-half of the kitchen furniture; to sons James, John and Samuel McTeer, 200
pounds each; to son Sherron, 300 pounds; to daughters Margaret, Jane and Else
Mateer, 150 pounds each. The children to share "according to the rule above"
after their mother's death in the estate set aside for her living; if there is
more than enough to pay the legacies or not enough, the children are to share
equally in the profit or loss; and "if any of my children die minors having no
issue, then their share or shares are to be equally divided between my
surviving children." Executors: his wife, William Bryson, and Robert McTeer
of Allen Township, they to have power "to advertise, sell and convey" the real
estate. Witnesses: C. Quigley, John McDanel.

On 4 MAy 1827 John Mateer, Sharon Mateer, William L. Peart and Elia (Else in a
later mention), formerly Elia Mateer, Philip Brumbaugh and Jane his wife,
formerly Jane Mateer, and Walter Sloan as guardian of the minor children of his
wife Margaret, formerly Margaret Mateer, all of Armstrong County, gave a Power
of Attorney to Alexander Mahon of Cumberland County to receipt for their shares
of the money owed on their father's estate and to release James Dunlap's
mortgage. When Dunlap bought the plantation in 1805 it was agreed that he
should give a mortgage for one-third the purchase money with the interest to go
to the widow for her lifetime; the widow is now dead and the money is due to
the heirs.

of the Estate of Robert Bailey deceased. On 20 November 1818 the Court issued
a distributions order for Elizabeth Bailey widow, "her family being seven in
number"; she was to have corn, wheat, potatoes, fodder, eight small hogs, wool,
cotton and $30.00 cash. Inventory taken 10 December 1818 included tools,
household furnishings and animals.

Final Disposition of the Bailey land in Roane County is covered in a series of
deeds: on 13 July 1841 Robert C. Bailey of Roane County, for $57 conveyed to
Eliza M. Bailey all of his rights as an heir of Robert Bailey deceased,
specifically an undivided one-sixth interest in 50 acres located near Cave
Spring on the North Tennessee River, "where Robert Bailey's widow now resides";
on 21 September 1867 Ann Smith, formerly Ann Bailey, of the 13th Civil
District, Roane County, for $150 deeded to her sister Eliza M. Houston, formerly
Eliza Bailey, an undivided interest in 50 acres in the 15th Civil District,
"where the said Eliza M. Houston and her husband now reside", adjoining
property of William J. Owings and the Ellis Mill tract; Ann's interest was
originally one-sixth, but is now one-fifth because her brother John Bailey, who
went to Texas and has not been heard from in the last twenty years is now
presumed dead with his share undisposed of; on 27 January 1869 Jane McMillen of
Henderson County, Kentucky, by her Attorney J. B. Smith of Roane County, for
$150 conveyed to "our sister Eliza M. Houston wife of Robert F. Houston", the
undivided interest of the said Margaret Smith in the 50 acres in the 13th Civil
District, the estate of her father Robert Bailey, also as a sister and
heir-at-law of our brother John L. Bailey, "who left the county many years ago,
unmarried, and is supposed to have died."

named as a son-in-law in the will of James McTeer, together with the fact that
John Mateer, another son of James, filed for Administration on Robert's estate
on 19 Oct. 1803, the very same date when he took their father's will for
probate, and employing the ?father's witnesses as sureties for the bond on
Robert's estate, confirms the placement of this Robert in this family. Further
proof that this Robert was the same as the Co-executor of Samuel McTeer's will
is found in a deed dated 12 June 1805, whereby Rosanna McTeer and William
Bryson conveyed Samuel's real property to James Dunlap; there the grantors
state that they were appointed Executors of Samuel's estate along with on
Robert McTeer, "which Robert is now deceased."

Attorney in Fact, -- these grantors for $1500 conveyed to Jacob Golden (or
Gulden) of Cumberland County, 171 acres 74 perches in Mifflin Township,
Cumberland County, as warranted to William Montgomery on 16 March 1789 and
devised by his will (dated 18 November 1806) to his daughters. Acknowledged
same date, recorded 16 September 1850.

The 1850 census of Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County, lists John Mateer
aged 72, with Rebecca Mateer aged 65, Margaret Mateer aged 25 and Rebecca
Mateer aged 2, living next door to James Mateer, aged 34 years with wife
Amelia.

The will of John Mateer of Lower Allen Township, written 1 April 1853, probated
19 March 1863 directed that his 190 acre plantation should be sold to pay the
following legacies: $1500 to each of three daughters, Margaret Mateer, Rebecca
Mateer and Elizabeth Ann Gilchrist, wife of James; $100 each to five
grandchildren, John, William, Robert, George and James Mateer, children of son
William M. Mateer; $200 each to three grandchildren, Laura, Priscilla and James

said James deceased; any remaining estate to be divided into five equal shares,

James Boyd, James McClung and Skeen; he paid $26.50 down out of a total price
of $265.00.

The will of William Boyd of Bount Co., written 17 June 1825, directed that his
personal property be sold and the proceeds used "to redeem the land", which was
then to be sold to pay the following legacies within six years time: to William
Gertin, $40; to Mary Allen, $25; to Alice Black's heirs $15 with an additional
$15 "owed from my father's estate of which I was Executor"; to sister Nancy
Kirkpatrick, $10, bed, calico quilt; to sister Margaret McGaughey, a cow; to
Hannah Boyd, bed with striped tick, dishes, loom; to brother James Boyd, one
half the remaining estate; to each of four sisters, Nancy Kirkpatrick, Margaret
McGaughey, Sarah Gertin and Polly Skeen, one fifth of the other half; to Robert
Boyd's heirs, the remaining tenth part. He directed that his black boy Hardy
should be free at age 21 and should be taught to read the Bible. Executors:

On 26 Sept. 1826 James Boyd presented a bill against the Estate of William Boyd
deceased: $260.00 "for 397 days or 13 months attendance on William Boyd day
and night." There was also a bill by William Boyd, son of James, for labor
hauling fodder and corn and one by Samuel Boyd who helped with this farm work.

According to the records of the Pennsylvania Direct Tax of 1798 for Allen Twp.,
Cumberland Co., James McTeer Jr. was then owner and occupant of a two-story
frame house in Lisburn. That dwelling was 24 by 18 feet with five windows
containing 56 lights; there was also a frame kitchen 18 by 8 feet, and both
structures were located on a lot containing 108 perches. The whole property
was valued at $300.

On 3 Nov. 1817 Andrew Mateer was appointed Administrator of the intestate
estate of James McTeer of Lisburn. Bond was set for $600.

On 15 May 1818 Andrew Mateer, brother and one of the heirs of James Mateer,
late of Allen Twp., deceased, came into Court to state that James had died
intestate "leaving one brother and three sisters of the whole blood surviving",
namely Andrew Mateer, Alice wife of Nathaniel Wilson, Isabella widow of John
Creigh deceased, Mary widow of Charles Pattison, "and the issue of two
brothers", namely, Samuel Mateer's five children, John, Andrew, James, Samuel

Within six weeks of the date of Samuel's wife's will (Jean Ewing) Samuel sold off his land and farming equipment and six weeks after that he was dead. Rather obviously Samuel Mateer was sick unto death for some time before his demise, and it was appropriate that his wife's family should be distressed to contemplate the future for his widow and young children.

In a militia list of 4 February, 1793, Samuel H. McTeer was shown as a resident of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, aged between 18 and 45 years.

On 5 November 1796 Samuel McTeer of Newton Township, Cumberland County, bid in at public vendue for 153 pounds, a 71 acre tract with improvements in Newton Township, which had been seized in August 1792 by the County Collector of Revenue on a judgment against Joseph Wilson late of Cumberland County for 150.78.6 pounds. Sheriff's deed dated 7 April 1797, filed 11 October 1797.

On 30 April 1798 Paul Thompson and wife Agnes of Monaghan Township, York County, conveyed to Samuel Huston McTeer of Newton Township, Franklin County, PN, for 550 pounds, 90 acres 19 perches in Monaghan Township with the usual allowance of 8 acres 113 perches. Witnesses: Edward O'Hal, John Nesbit, Hugh Thompson.

In the spring of 1803 Samuel H. Mateer announced a public vendue for Friday, 13 March 1803, to sell his land in Monaghan Township, 100 acres with improvements, grain in the ground, mare, cows, hogs, a case of drawers and a dresser. The terms of the sale were for the plantation 150 pounds down and the remainder at the rate of 30 pounds yearly; for bids under 10 shillings, cash, for bids
exceeding 10 shillings, nine months credit; and the "owner reserves one bid on each article if he sees cause." -- At the sale Major Thomas McCreary bought the plantation for 460 pounds, but before the transaction was legally completed Samuel H. Mateer was dead. In lieu of a deed the following papers were filed in York County on 16 May 1803: notice of the sale (as above) with a list of buyers; a deposition of John May that the sales notice as exhibited was in the handwriting of Samuel H. Mateer, "late of Monaghan Township, York County, who was present at the sale"; and the Prothonotary's certification that there was a valid contract between Mateer and Thomas McCreary.

Andrew Mateer was an early settler of Lisburn in Lower Allen Township, where he
had property in a loop of Yellow Breeches Creek. Because he was engaged in
many speculative real estate transactions, particularly with the buying and
selling of tax escheated property, Andrew's name occurs frequently in the deed
indexes of Perry and York as well as of Cumberland County. However, detailed
information on these conveyance is omitted here as having little or no
genealogical value.

In his younger days Andrew may have been a carpenter. A list of the members of
the Carpenters' Society of Carlisle, drawn up about 1795 includes Andrew
Metter, Charles Pattison, his brother-in-law, and James Minteer, his brother.
Members of this Society agreed not to work under carpenters who were not
fellow-members and thus earned for their organization the designation as the
"earliest Labor Union on record."

In the record of his marriage, and elsewhere as administrator and witness, he
is identified as Major Andrew Mateer; so he must have had some military
connection in the local community. Later he was a Justice of the Peace, known
as "Squire Mateer."

In the 1820 census of Allen Township, Cumberland County, Andrew Mateer's
household was credited with four males, three 26-45 and one under five years;
three females, one 26-45, one 16-26 and one under five years.

The will of Andrew Mateer of the town of Lisburn, Cumberland County, written 29
June 1838, probated 13 August 1839, begins with an explanation, "in consequence
of misfortunes some years since my own estate was sold by the Sherrif" but "my
sister the late Isabella Creigh by her will bequeathed to my children nearly
all of her estate and appointed me guardian and executor." Records on that
property have all been accounted for in Orphans Court, and the testator now
asks that another guardian be appointed for his youngest daughter, Margaret I.
Mateer; he further requests that any property remaining in his estate be
distributed according to intestate law. Executrices: the widow Ann Mateer and
daughter Mary A. Mateer. A codicil dated 21 June 1839 "since daughter Mary Ann
has since married Samuel Clerk" asks that he be appointed joint executor in her
place. Witnesses to the will: George Anderson, William M. Mateer; to the
codicil, Isaac Lloyd and George Anderson.

William Mateer lived and died on the farm in Allen Township which his father
William had inherited from the original James McTeer. He was a faithful member
of Silver Spring Presbyterian Church, where he was known as "Singing Billy"
because he led the music with a "sonorous voice and a wonderful facility" for
adapting words to familiar tunes.

A legal release on 28 October 1828 stated that William Mateer is an "habitual
drunkard."

On 3 September 1829 John Mateer Jr. was appointed Administrator of the Estate
of William Mateer of Allen Township; bond was set for $400 with Robert Mateer
and John Mateer as sureties.

On 12 August 1834 John Mateer, eldest son of William Mateer, late of Allen
Township, deceased, stated in court that his father had died intestate leaving
a widow Rebecca and six children, namely, the petitioner, William, Henry
Wilson, Margaret Jane who married William Wise, Mary and Elizabeth. Three of
these children were minors: Daniel Mohler was guardian for Henry and AndrewChapman for Mary and Elizabeth. William Mateer died seized of 120 acres in
Allen Township, bounded by lands of John Mateer the Elder, David Hurst, Henry
Longnecker, Henry Myers and John Mateer of James; and now John Mateer the
petitioner requests an Inquest of Partition. On 2 September 1834 the Inquest
reported that this property, which was appraised at $25 per acre, could not be
conveniently divided; and on 10 December 1834 John Mateer, the eldest son,
elected to accept the real estate at valuation. Then on 2 April 1836 William
Mateer, Andrew Chapman as Guardian for Mary and Elizabeth Mateer, Daniel Mohler
as Guardian for Henry Wilson Mateer, and William Wise in the right of his wife
Margaret Jane acknowledged receipt of $344.05.5 for each share, with interest
on one-third to the widow for her lifetime.

In 1830 Martha McTier aged 50-60 was head of a household in Western District,
Bount County; this household included one female aged 15-20, and two males aged
20-30 and 10-15.

On 1 April 1842 John M. McTeer and Henry F. McTeer, for $300 conveyed to Robert
McTeer their interest in 128 acres one rod on Nine Mile Creek, abutting on land
of William Armstrong and James C. McTeer, being the same land in Grant #1133 by
the State of Tennessee on 16 May 1810 to Littel James McTeer. The grantorssigned this deed in Cass County, Georgia.

Robert McTeer, Jr., was a farmer and lived the greater part of his life at
Ellejoy, Tennessee. "He owned the lands known as the 'Lower Place', where he
made his home. We have but little either by record or tradition of him, either
personal appearance, traits or habits. One thing regarding him indicates that
he had an intensity of feeling in standing by a friend. ... A brother-in-law,
Mr. Sherrill, became involved in debt. Robert McTeer first conveyed his lands
to him and then made a joint mortgage to secure the indebtedness of Mr.
Sherrill. the mortgage was foreclosed, and Robert lost all. Grandfather
William McTeer bought in the land and owned it at the time of his death."

Legal notice of Robert McTeer's death is found in the Blount County, Tennessee
Probate files, when on 25 March 1833 his son Montgomery McTeer was appointed
guardian for his brother William McTeer with Samuell Sherrill as surety in the
amount of $500.

Martin McTeer owned and operated the mill which had been his father's. It was
located on and run by the waters of Ellejoy Creek at a site beside the old
McTeer Fort.

In addition to land inherited through his father's will, Martin McTeer had a
grant of 100 acres from the State of Tennessee, filed in Blount County, 21
October 1824, surveyed 25 October 1824, and bounded by lands of Robert Murrins,
William McTeer and Adam Kuns.

In the 1830 census of Blount County Martin Mcteer and his wife were listed as
aged 50-60 years; they had living with them a girl aged 10-16 years. In the
1850 census of the 1st Civil District Blount County Martin McTeer was listed
aged 78 years with wife aged 71, both born in Pennsylvania; the only other
member of their household was Minerva McTeer aged 20, born in Tennessee (their
niece).

The will of Martin McTeer, written 15 March 1845, probated 6 February 1854,
bequeathed to wife Ann, all of "the tract I now live on", also one-half of the
100 acres adjoining, a Negro girl Dolly and control of all property; to friends
Moses Hooper and Miles Hooper, the place "where they now live"; to niece
Minervey McTeer, the gray mare and brindle cow. Executors: Mathew H. Bogle,

William McTeer was a farmer, living at Ellejoy on the old home place of his
father. He was a deputy sheriff for many years, a justice of the Peace and a
Member of the County Court.

In an address given at a reunion of the McTeer family, Major McTeer gave this
personal appraisement; "My grandfather, William McTeer, was about five feet ten
inches in height. He was of very slender build, and carried himself erect,
even in his old days. He had small hands and feet, very blue eyes, was quite
active and very quick in his movements. He was neat and particular in his
dress and personal appearance.

"He had a great regard for religion, and was Presbyterian of course, but never
became a member of the church. I have been told that when a young man a
minister offended him, and for that reason he never became a member. While
born and raised in America, he had a strong Scottish accent, and used the
plainest and often strongest language when expressing his thoughts.

In politics he was a Whig of the most pronounced type. A circumstance in the
closing hours of his life illustrates his character. When the Civil War came
up, he took a decided stand for the Union. He owned slaves by inheritance from
grandmother's side of the family, to the value of $12,000 to $15,000. That
made no difference with him. He had taken his stand and was ready to sacrifice
his all in maintaining the stand taken.

"He was confined to his bed on the day of the election as to whether the State
should secede. The election ground was near his home, but he was quite sick
and 82 years of age. An old friend of the family, Mr. W. C. Davis, who was the
officer holding the election, got an opportunity and went to the house to see
how the old man was getting along.

"Grandfather was deeply interested in the result of the election, especially of
that precinct. He asked Davis how the election was going, and whether there
was any danger of that precinct voting for secession. Being told that it was
almost solid for the Union, he replied, 'That's all right, and that being the
case I will not try to vote; but if there is any danger I will readily give my
life to save the Union.' That proved to be his last sickness. He died soon
after."

During the War of 1812 William McTeer was First Seargeant in Captain Jehu
Stephen's Company of Mounted Riflemen; they were in active service from
Tennessee down into Florida.

On 7 June 1816 John White Jr. deeded to William McTeer, both of Blount County,
for $570, a Negro woman named Lucy aged about 23 years, and a Negro boy child
named Henry aged about seven months. Witnesses: Samuel Bogal, John White.

In the 1830 census of the Eastern Division of Blount County, William McTier was
listed as 50-60 years; his household had two boys aged 5-10 years; females
40-50, 20-30 and a little girl under five years. In 1840 he was listed as
60-70 years, his wife 50-60, two sons 15-20, and a daughter 15-20. His sons
are listed in 1850 in separate households, but William and his wife do not
appear in that enumeration. In 1860 they were listed in a separate household at
Ellejoy P. O., William was aged 80 years born in Pennsylvania and Mary was aged
75 born in Tennessee. Mary's sister Ann McTeer (widow of Martin McTeer) wasliving next door, then son James McTeer, and in the second house down the road
son Andrew.

Apparently William McTeer was a much larger land owner than is evident in the
Blount County deed records. By his father's will he inherited 260 acres "of
the home plantation, including the old improvement, and he bought in some
additional acreage when the lands of his brother Robert were foreclosed.

There were four Blount County land grants from the State of Tennessee to
William McTeer; on 25 November 1824, 100 acres; on 5 July 1826, 132 acres; on
20 January 1840, 22 acres; and on 17 July 1843, three acres. The first two of
these grants were filed on 21 July 1824 in the Blount County Entry Takers Book,
100 acres surveyed 24 September 1824 on Ellejoy Creek bounded by the original
survey to Robert McTeer, and on 9 January 1826, 132 acres, surveyed 28 April
1826, bounded by Samuel Bogle, Adam Kuns, William Cummings, John Williams and
James Wilson.

On 5 September 1830 Mathew H. Bogle conveyed to William McTeer, both of Blount
County, for $500, 114 acres 15 perches on Ellejoy Creek, and on 11 October 1843
William Garner deeded to William McTeer, for $50, 36 acres "where I now live."

On 1 August 1836 William McTeer sold to Elizabeth Cummings, both of Blount
County, for $100, 132 acres on Ellejoy Creek, adjoining lands of Samuel Bogle,
Adam Kuns, Willim Cummings, John Williams and James Wilson.

On 23 June 1837 William McTier, Benjamin Tipton and William Davis jointly
obtained from the State of Tennessee a grant of 2230 acres, surveyed for them
18 October 1836 partly in Blount County and partly in Sevier County. On 1 Jun
1852 William McTeer transferred to Andrew B. McTeer and James A. McTeer,
jointly and equally, for $100 his "interest and claim", being a two-thirds part
of this large undivided tract.

On 2 May 1836 William was listed among Blount County Justices of the Peace and
was at the same time chosen as County Chairman.

William McTeer performed marriage 20 November 1851 of John Townsend to Nancy
Hubbard.

Evidently William McTeer died intestate and his two sons A. B. and J. A. McTeer
were then appointed as Adminstrators of the estate. The Blount County Court
Minutes for December 1866 record an inventory and sale, and for March 1869 a
report and settlement of the Estate of William McTeer deceased. The only
papers in this probate file are disconnected receipts, the earliest dated 13
August 1862 and the latest 4 January 1869.

Some time after the Civil War these two sons (then his only surviving children)
set up four deeds making a division of their father's real property. All of
these lands were located in Blount County on Ellejoy Creek. On 2 January 1869
Andrew B. McTeer to James A. McTeer, two tracts totaling 676 acres, adjoining
lands of M. Kounts, Samuel Kounts, Cummings and heirs of William Perry,
consideration a "quit claim from James A. McTeer for land on which I now live."
On 26 February 1869 two deeds from James A. McTeer to Andrew B. McTeer for
three tracts totaling 469 acres bounded by lands of John Heddricks, J. A.
McTeer, J. H. Gillespie, Cummings and Caleb Davis, total considerations $1000.
On 18 May 1869 Andrew B. McTeer to James A. McTeer, 318 1/2 acres bounded by
John Heddrick, A. B. McTeer and J. H. Gillespie, consideration $500.

Finally, twenty years after the old man's death, on 6 November 1882 Andrew B.
McTeer and James A. McTeer were reappointed Administrators of the Estate of
William McTeer deceased; George C. Davis and Will A. McTeer signed the bond
for $1000. On 12 May 1883 small amounts of cash were distributed to A. B. and
J. A. McTeer.

John Mateer came to Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, about 1806 "with his
mother, two brothers and three sisters." He settled in Franklin Township (now
East Franklin) near Montgomeryville, where he took up 250 acres of undeveloped
land. In 1855 he moved to Illinois.

On 12 December 1822 John Mateer bought from Montgomery for $900 the latter's
interest in a large tract in Franklin Township, Armstrong County and on 18
October 1833 a patent for this property was granted jointly to John Mateer and
the heirs of Francis Johnston. Partition on 26 December 1833 released to
Mateer the 218 acres 71 perches mentioned hereafter.

The 1850 census of Franklin Township lists John Mateer aged 68 years, with wife
Margaret aged 58 years and three children at home, Rosanna aged 22, George W.
aged 21, and Anthony aged 16 years.

On 10 April 1855 John Mateer and wife Margaret of Franklin Township for $3100
conveyed to Samuel Mateer (their son) of Pine Township, 218 acres 71 perches in
Franklin Township, adjoining lands of John Montgomery, Alexander W. Johnston as
Executor, John Buchanon and William Wasson. Witnesses: D. B. Heiner and Alex
A. Lowery.

In 1860 John Mateer Sr. aged 78 was living in Wayne County, Illinois, in
"South Range 5, East Township 3:; his household included his wife Margaret aged
68 born in Ireland, Rosanna Mateer aged 28, Anthony Mateer aged 25, and Jake
Montgomery aged 12 years.

In 1821 William Peart Sr. had conveyed to William Jr. 300 acres 80 perches in
the south part of Pine Grove and had agreed in 1828 to convey another parcel of
248 acres including grist and saw mills; this latter sale was consumated by the
widow Susan in 1832.

On 20 June 1842 Alcy Pert, widow of William L. Peart late of Pine Township,
deceased intestate, petitioned for guardianships for her children, Eliza Jane,
Margaret M., Else Anne, Nancy G., Mary Adeline, and Esther E. Peart, all minors
under fourteen years. A. L. Robinson was so appointed with James Cochran as
Surety in the amount of $600.

On 21 September 1846 an inquest of partition was requested concerning the real
estate of William L. Peart of Pine Township, 348 acres adjoining James Cochran,
Samuel Hutchinson and land previously sold by William L. Peart to Walter Sloan
his brother-in-law. Peart's heirs were eleven children: Rachel wife of William
Meaner of Indiana County, Pennsylvania, Rosanna wife of Samuel Cochran,
Susannah Peart and Samuel Peart, all of age; also William, Eliza Jane,
Margaret, Else Anne, Nancy, Adeline and Easter Peart, minors.

This Peart estate was continued over many years until all of the children were
grown up and until after the death of the widow. There were distribution
payments from time to time with many releases and receipts. In a final
affidavit dated 18 February 1884, S. M. Peart lists the heirs as follows:
Isabella Peart, wife of William S. Peart, now wife of Joseph Campbell; Rachel
Peart, widow of William Manor; Rosannah Peart wife of Samuel Cochran; Susanna

April 1866 to dispose of the estate of Maria E. Carmody. On 1 April 1865
Harriet B. Hoover and Samuel M. Hoover of Carlisle, Dorothy F. Carmody and D.
J. Carmody of Mechanicsburg, Priscilla L. Colestock and Z. A. Colestock of
Cumberland County, Kate J. Seiver and Henry S. Seiver of Chambersburg, for $825
conveyed to Amelia H. Mateer of Mechanicsburg, a lot in Mechanicsburg on the
south side of Main Street; this lot was conveyed on 23 February 1853 to Maria
E. Carmody who died intestate on 9 February 1865 leaving as survivors her
heirs-at-law, Harriet B. Hoover, Amelia H. Mateer widow, Priscilla L.
Colestock, Dorothy Carmody, David J. Carmody and Kate Seiver. On 31 March 1868
Amelia H. Mateer sold this lot to William C. Houser and wife Annie V. Houser
for $2000.

In the 1850 census James Mateer Jr. aged 39 years was listed as a farmer in
Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County; his wife Amelia was aged 26 with
children Saray (sic) aged 3, Priscilla aged 2 and John D. aged 9 months.

In 1860 A. Mateer aged 34 years was listed as a milliner in Mechanicburg,
Pennsylvania; her household included two daughters, L. E. aged 13 and P. C.
aged 12, also two sons, J. D. aged 10 and J. C. aged 8 years.

On 17 March 1863 in connection with the estate settlement of John Mateer, a
guardian William R. Gorgas, was appointed for John D. and James C. Mateer,
minors under 14 years, on petition of Amelia H. Mateer, and of Laura E. and
Priscilla C. Mateer over 14 Years at their own request; all four minors were
described as children of James Mateer deceased "lately of the City of
Harrisburg." On 22 December 1863 A. H. Mateer, widow of James Mateer late of
Lower Allen Township, deceased, petitioned the court for a distribution from
the estate for her daughter Laura E. Mateer now 17 years old, residing in
Mechanicsburg with her mother "who supports herself there as a mantua maker."Since William R. Gorgas Esquire guardian of the said Laura has on hand $213, and
more is expected from the estate of Laura's grandfather, John Mateer Sr., late
of Newville deceased, the petitioner requests a release now of $100 "to further
her daughter's education."

In the 1880 census of Mechanicsburg, Amelia H. Mateer aged 56 years was listed
as proprietor of a millinery store; the only other resident in her household
was her daughter Laura E. Mateer aged 30 (sic), a clerk in the store.

The identity of William Montgomery Mateer's wife is indicated in the will of
her brother, Edminston Johnson of Shippensburg, written 14 January 1859,
probated 11 February 1859, which bequeathed $300 to his nephew George Mateer
"son of my sister Jane"; $200 to James E. McLane, son of sister Nancy; all
remaining estate in four equal shares, one to each of two nephews, George V.
Johnson and John E. Johnson, one to niece Margaret Harper, and one to the
parents of these children, brother John Johnson and wife Amanda. Executor:
John Johnson. Witnesses: Alex Stewart, James Mackey.

One Montgomery Mateer was admitted to membership at Silver Spring Church on 8
December 1831, but this member is reported to have died in 1836.

The vital records file at the Pennsylvania State Libarary lists the marriage on
1 January 1839 of William M. Mateer, "merchant of Leesburg" (a village in
Cumberland County, Pennsylvania four miles east of Shippensburg) to Miss Jane
D. Johnson "of Franklin County."

In the 1850 census William Matteer was living in Carlisle, Pennsylvania; he was
aged 37 years with wife Jane aged 34, and sons John aged 10, William aged 8,
Robert aged 5 and George aged one year.

In his death notice which appeared 4 February 1858 in the "American Volunteer"
published at Carlisle this decendent was described as Colonel William M. Mateer
who died in Allen Township Saturday last after a short illness aged 46 years.
On 18 February 1858 Robert G. Young was appointed Administrator of the Estate
of William M. Mateer of Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County. Bond was set
at $400 with Jas. Saunders and E. Carman as sureties.

On 22 March 1859 William J. Mateer and John E. Mateer, minors over 14 years
children of William M. Mateer, petitioned for George V. Johnson as their
guardian. On 28 August 1865 George O. Mateer, minor over 14 years, child of
William M. Mateer, petitioned for a guardian because of moneys due him from the
estates of his grandfather John Mateer deceased and of his uncle Edmundson
Johnson deceased. John C. Dunlop, the Guardian so appointed, immediately asked
for and was granted on 28 August 1865 a suitable allowance (not to exceed $200)
for the support and education of his ward. According to notes kept by Horace
N. Mateer there was also a daughter in this family who married William McClain.

This family lived in York County Pennsylvania for a time before coming to Ohio.
In 1830 John Mateer and his brother William were in Mansfield, Richland County,
Ohio; John and his wife were both aged 30-40 years with four children, a boy
and girl aged 5-10 and another boy and girl under five years. The female aged
60-70 years living in their household was probably John's mother Hannah
(Nesbit) (Mateer) Sofley.

Soon after this census John Mateer moved on to Mt. Gilead, Ohio, where he
engaged as a millwright; he was prominent in the organization of the
Presbyterian Church there. In 1832 he was superintendent of its Sunday School,
and in 1834 its Ruling Elder.

In the 1840 census of Washington Township, Marion County, Ohio, John Mateer was
listed as engaged in manufacturing; he and his wife were aged 40-50 years and
their household included boys aged 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20; as well as girls
aged 5-10, 10-15, 15-20. Morrow County was organized in 1848 from parts of
Marion, Knox, Delaware and Richland Counties.

In the 1850 census of Gilead Township, Morrow County, John Mateer aged 56 was
head of a household which included Jane Mateer aged 58, Mary Mateer aged 21,
Elizabeth Mateer aged 17 and James M. Mateer aged 16. Elizabeth and James were
born in Ohio, the others in Pennsylvania.

On 23 April 1853 John Mateer was appointed guardian of Jane Ivey and Benjamin
Pinyard; bond for Jane's estate was $200 and her final account was filed 18
April 1855; Benjamin's estate was bonded for $300, and his final account was
filed 6 March 1860. In 1852 Jane Pinyard married Mahlon Ivey (or Irey); she is
presumed to have been Benjamin's sister; before this time John Mateer's oldest
daughter had married a William Pinyard, but the relationship of Jane and
Benjamin to either the Pinyards or the Mateers is nowhere indicated in the
guardianship proceedings.

In 1860 John Mateer, farmer aged 65, was living in the town of Mt. Gilead with
wife Jane aged 67 and daughter Mary J. Mateer aged 31.

The will of John Mateer of Morrow County, written 12 April 1863, probated 11
September 1863, bequeathed to his wife Jane all property for her lifetime with
rights of disposal at her discretion; at her death daughter Mary Jane Latham to

The biography of William N. Mateer's son in the "History of Morrow County,
Ohio", 1911, by A. J. Baughman and Robert F. Bartlett says that Ross's mother
was Elizabeth Porter and that he had a half brother Joseph McMullin. This
reasonable interpretation from this statement is that Elizabeth was married
first to a McMullin and that William Mateer was therefore her second husband.

William N. Mateer was a schoolteacher in Adams County, Pennsylvania, before
moving west in 1830; in that year William and his brother John were listed in
the census of Mansfield, Ohio; William was aged 20-30 years, his wife was
30-40; there were two boys in the household, one 10-15 (probably William's
step-son) and another under five years.

Shortly after this census the Mateers moved on to Morrow County. William first
settled in the new town of Whetstone (also called Youngstown) which had been
laid out in 1824 in the NE 1/2 of Sec. 2 (in the south part of the present town
of Mt. Gilead). He was the first chairmaker in the new community and also its
schoolmaster.

On 2 March 1831 William N. and Elizabeth Mateer along with John and Jane Mateer
were listed as members of the "Presbyterian Church of Morrow" (now the
Presbyterian Church of Mt. Gilead). William N.'s son Ross N. Mateer was
baptized at the first such sacrament held in this church; his father was Sunday
School Superintendent there at the time.

After a few years William N. and family left the town proper and moved to a
farm some 2 1/2 miles east of Mt. Gilead, possibly on the land described in the
following conveyance: On 3 April 1837 William N. Mateer of Marion County,
Ohio, bought for $650 from Benjamin Hart and wife Mary of Knox County, Ohio, 80
acres previously patented to Hart in the W 1/2 SE 1/4 Sec. 7, T 17, R 20 of
lands sold at Wooster, Ohio. Morrow County was formed in 1848 from parts of
Marion, Knox, Delaware and Richland Counties, and the modern location of this
section would be in eastern Gilead Township or on the west edge of Franklin
Township in Morrow County near the present Mateer Road.

In the 1850 census of Franklin Township, Morrow County, Elizabeth Mateer aged
55 years was head of a household including John Mateer aged 20, farmer, Ross
Mateer aged 18, carpenter, and Matilda J. Mateer aged 16. Each of the three
children was credited with real property worth $400; so the inference is that
William had died intestate leaving his children as joint owners of the farm.

years, was living next door to A. Mateer, female aged 75 years (his
mother-in-law). Dr. Mateer's household included his wife M. I. Mateer aged 38
and three children, G. W. aged 13, J. A. aged 10 and A. H. aged 9 years.

Letters of Administration on the Estate of William Mateer were granted on 9

her father's estate. On 7 May 1793 Moses Wallace of Allen Township was
appointed guardian of Isabella and Jane Wilson, minor orphans over 14 years,
daughters of Alexander Wilson deceased; on 5 August 1793 Robert Whitehill of
East Pennsboro Township was appointed guardian of Hugh and Richard Wilson,
minor orphans under 14 years, sons of Alexander Wilson deceased, also of Mary
Wilson aged about seven years; on 8 May 1793 Grizzle Wilson, William Wilson and
Richard Fulton, Administrators of the Estate of Alexander Wilson, reported a
balance of 59.01.01 pounds, including 16 pounds owed to Hugh Wilson.

On 28 May 1822 William Mateer of Allen Township and wife Jane for $10 deeded
Robert Mateer of Cumberland County, 107 acres 10 perches in Allen Township,
"the plantation on which William and Jane now live", bounded by lands of Felty
Fayman, John Black, Layman and Alexander Wills (late of Moses Wallace
deceased), being half a tract belonging to Alexander Wilson, late of Allen
Township, deceased, which was amicably divided (as per agreement of 30 Jaunary
1819) between his heirs, viz., his daughter said Jane Mateer and Isabella wife
of David Sterritt of Mifflin Township. On the same date Robert Mateer of
Cumberland County, for $10, reconveyed to William and Jane Mateer of Cumberland
County, a life interest in this same tract of 107 acres 10 perches, Jane's
inheritance from her father Alexander Wilson, with the proviso that after the
death of both William and Jane the property should go to "the right heirs of
the said William Mateer." Witnesses to both instruments: George W. Harris, A.
Wills. Both deeds acknowledged 28 May 1822, recorded 4 April 1823.

The land referred to in these deeds was a part of Lot 5 of the Manor of
Louthar, taken up by John wilson in 1770; it was near New Cumberland in Lower
Allen Township, and at least a part of the tract was laid out in village lots
after it was sold by William Mateer's heirs.

On 4 July 1834 James Dunlap was appointed Administrator of the Estate of
William Mateer of Allen Township; bond was set at $6000 with Martin Dunlap as
surety.

On 13 August 1834 Mary Ann Mateer, widow, mother and next friend, petitioned
for a guardian for Eliza, Margaret Caroline and Mary Jane, minors under 14
years, children of William Mateer, late of Allen Township deceased. Francis
Porter and William Harkness were so appointed. On 8 August 1842 Ann Eliza
Mateer, minor daughter of William Mateer of Allen Township, who died intestate
in August 1834, petitioned for a new guardian for herself and sisters because
she is now foruteen years old and also because her former guardian Francis
Porter is now deceased. On this petition George H. Bucher was appointed
guardian.

In the 1840 census of Dillsburg, Carrol Township, York County, Pennsylvania,
the household of Daniel Bailey farmer aged 59 years included his wife Mary A.
Bailey aged 56, Ann E. Mateer aged 22, Caroline Mateer aged 20, Mary J. Mateer
aged 14, Sarah Porter aged 40 and Barney Connor aged 14; all were born in
Pennsylvania.

Administration on the Estate of Daniel Bailey of Dillsburg was granted on 9
October 1868 to Samuel A. Bailey and J. Bailey Mumper.

The will of Mary A. Bailey of Lower Allen Township, writeen 2 June 1871,
probated 27 January, 1882, bequeathed to her daughter Ann Eliza, a bed of her
choice and six silver tablespoons; to daughter Mary Jane, a gold watch; to
daughter Ann Elizabeth, the rockaway and harness at their appraised value; $100
each to six grandchildren, Lulu, George B., Samuel and Mary Mumber, Mary and
Arthur Brandt. All remaining estate to be divided between three daughters, Ann
Eliza, Mary Jane and Margaret Caroline. Executor: William R. Gorgas Esquire.

James Mateer's wife had been previously married and was the mother of three
daughters by her first husband Spangler. One of these girls was mentioned in
the will of William Mateer, as his "half-sister Susan Zeigler"; Nancy Ann Teel
mentioned there as another residual legatee may have had a similar status,
though no such relationship is specifically indicated. the Crawford County,
Ohio, Death Records lists Sarah Mateer, who died 12 March 1882 aged 65 years
one month 7 days, born in Pennsylvania; this woman born about 1817, could
possibly have been another Spangler daughter who went by the name Mateer after
her mother's remarriage and removal to Ohio.

In 1850 James Mateer aged 56 was a "farmer" living in Carlisle, Pennsylvania;
his houshold included Elizabeth aged 56, Nancy aged 22, Margaret aged 18, Mary
aged 17, Robert aged 16, Daniel aged 14 and Sarah aged 11. The eldest son
William Matteer aged 26 was living nearby with wife Catherine aged 25 and
daughter Mary E. aged 3 years.

On 2 February 1856 John Johnson and wife Susanna of Crawford County, Ohio,
conveyed to James, Robert and Samuel Mateer of Crawford County, for $1000 paid
one-half by James Mateer and the other half by Robert and Samuel, 70 acres in
the E 1/2 NW1/4 Sec. 28 T 2 R 16 (in Holmes Township one mile south of Spore).
On 27 February 1858 these three, James MAteer, Robert Mateer and Samuel Mateer,
along with Elizabeth Mateer wife of James, all of Crawford County, deeded this
same land back to John Johnson. On 1 April 1858 Ashley Momsser and wife Julia
A. of Crawford County, conveyed to James Mateer, 80 acres in the NE part of
Sec. 16 T 3 R 16 (in Bucyrus Township about three miles southwest of the town
of Bucyrus).

While these deeds make it reasonably ceartain that James and Elizabeth Mateer
went to Ohio in 1854 with their son William, and that James died there in 1864,
no estate settlement for James Sr. is indexed in the Crawford County Probate
Records, nor does he appear in the 1860 census there.

On 31 December 1864 William Mateer was appointed Administrator of the Estate of
John S. Mateer deceased (third son of James); James Moore and Samuel Peterman
signed the administrator's bond (no amount stated). Inventory filed 27 January
1865 listed in 42 acres at $38 per acre, total value $1596 plus $275 in cash.
Since debts totaled some $1300, the Administrator petitioned the Court on 22
February 1865 for authority to sell the real estate located in the southeast
part of the southwest quarter of Sec. 9 T 3 R 18 on the Sandusky River in
Crawford County, Ohio, (about three miesl southwest of Bucyrus). This petition
listed the heirs-at-law of John S. Mateer as James R. Mateer of Tennessee,
Samuel Mateer, Sarah Mateer, Mary Mateer and William Mateer the petitioner.
These heirs were the decendent's brothers and sisters; so it is presumed that
his parents had already died.

This petition stated that Samuel, Mary, Sarah M. and William Mateer had
consented to the sale. Public notice was then directed toward James R. Mateer,
the absent heir whose consent was missing, and toward John Mateer and Margaret
Dunlap, who appear to have held notes secured by a lien against John S.
Mateer's land. On 2 March 1867 John Mateer and Jno. L. Dunlap "for Margaret
Dunlap" receipted for $112.50 each against notes for $200. These creditors,
John Mateer and Margaret (Mateer) Dunlap of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania,
were respectively uncle and aunt to John S. Mateer of Crawford Count, Ohio, and
both were well-off, amply able to lend a few hundred dollars to an aspiring (or
needy) young nephew.

The real estate was sold for much less than its inventory value, and on 1 May
1869 the Administrator reported a final balance for distribution of just 29.90.

In the 1850 census of Southhampton Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania,
Robert Mateer, farmer aged 53 years, was listed with wife Mary aged 46, sons
William aged 23 and John aged 20 years. There were three other members of this
household, Sarah Robinson aged 17, Mrs. Sarah Ohail aged 40 and Samuel Mateer
aged 16, "laborer". All were born in Pennsylvania.

On 20 March 1857 Robert Mateer of Southhampton Township, Cumberland County, and
wife, for $8400, conveyed to George Bushey of Franklin Township, Adams County,
Pennsylvania, two pieces of land in Southhampton Township, one containing 113
acres 98 perches, bounded by Alexander M. Duncan, Robert McCure, William A.
Davidson, the heirs of Edward Golden deceased, and Ann Highland deceased (this
tract deeded to Robert 30 March 1835 by John Benedict and wife Margaret); the
other containing two acres, bounded by Ann Highland deceased and the heirs of
Edward Golden deceased (this tract deeded to Robert 22 April 1845 by Jacob
Gulden and wife Elizabeth). Acknowledged 20 March 1857, recorded 9 April 1861.

In the 1880 census schedule Robert Mateer, a retired farmer aged 83 years was
living in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, with his wife Mary aged 75 years.

On 10 April 1884 Robert Mateer of Shippensburg entered into an agreement with
the Trustees of the Church of God to submit to arbitration their differences
regarding the boundaries of a lot on the southeast side of King Street in
Shippensburg.

The will of Robert Mateer of Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania,
written 5 December 1881, probated 16 November 1885, bequeathed to Calvin
Mateer, missionary in China, $300; to the Board of Home Missions, Presbyterian
Church $300; to wife Mary, the house and lot "where I live", also 30 shares in
the National Bank of Shippensburg and one-third of the income from the Franklin
County farm; to grandson Robert Mateer, son of John "who is crippled for life,"
$500 at aged 25 and gold-headed cane; to grandson Alfred Mateer, son of John,
five shares of stock in Spring Hill Cemetery; to son John B. Mateer, one
undivided half part of the farm in Southhampton Township, Franklin County, with
the privilege of taking the other half at $80 per acre, also his choice of two
pieces of mountain land, one in Southampton Township, Franklin County, and the
other in Southampton Township, Cumberland County, and ten shares of stock in
the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway; to grandchildren Bella Mateer, William N.
Mateer, and Mary Mateer, of son William, share and share alike, the remaining
half of the farm (with reversion to the family in case of death). If all three
die without issue, the farm is to go to son John. W. N. Mateer owes $833; in
case of his death this amount should go to Bella and Mary. Executors: wife
Mary, son John B. Mateer and J. Boyd Morrow. Witnesses: J. W. Kenyon, John
Bridges. A Codicil dated 19 August 1884: In case of the death of grandson W.
N. Mateer, his interest in the estate is to go to his sisters; if all die
without issue, then their interest is to go to John B. Mateer or his heirs.

The will of Mary Mateer of Shippensburg, written 18 September 1885, requested
that she be buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, bequeathed to son John B. Mateer, a
brick dwelling on East Main Street in Shippensburg in trust his lifetime then
to his heirs, this property to be security for obligations to the Shippensburg
Presbyterian Church and for lots in Spring Hill Cemetery; to granddaughter
Nannie, wife of J. Boyd Morrow, $700 in United States bonds in trust, with the
interest to Nannie or her daughter Mabel "if living", but at Nannie's death
thest bonds were to go to son John B. Mateer; to son John B. Mateer, 30 shares
in the First National Bank of Shippensburg. Executor: Son John B. Mateer.

heirs of Samuel Mateer, and his daughter Ellen (Dunlap) Saxton was still owner
of the place in 1898 when Major McTeer visited her and obtained his picture of

In the 1850 census of Lower Allen Township the household of James Dunlap aged
75 years included Margaret Dunlap aged 50, John C. Dunlap aged 32, Margaret
Dunlap aged 21, Robert D. Dunlap aged 17 and Mary A. Dunlap aged 12.

of the will of James Mateer late of Allen Township, Cumberland County,
deceased, conveyed to Robert Bryson of Allen Township, a tract of land in
Monaghan Township, York County, Pennsylvania, containing 111 acres 12 perches
and abutting on lands of John Wilson, James Torbet, and William Ross. this
property had been warranted to Mary Torbet, relict of Alin Torbet, and sold by
her to James Mateer on 8 April 1829. Witnesses: Jacob Gehr, Andrew Mateer.

The paternity of John Mateer's first wife and the identity of her children is
indicated in the following records: On 21 February 1855 John Armstrong was
appointed Administrator of the intestate estate of Samuel Martin of Monroe
Township; Bond was for $300 with John Mateer and H. W. Mateer as sureties. On
9 April 1855 Robert Mateer was appointed guardian for Mary. E. Mateer and Jane
E. Mateer, minor children of John Mateer of Franklin county, since by
inheritance from their grandfather Samuel Martin of Cumberland County they hold
an interest in a tract of land. On 14 August 1855 William R. Mateer of full
age and Robert Mateer as guardian for Mary E. Mateer and Jane E. Mateer, all
three "children of Mary Ann Mateer", petition for a division of their mother's
interest, an undivided one-half of 58 acres 33 perches located in Monroe
Township with a log house and a frame barn. This petition for division was
rejected, a sale was held, and on 6 November 1855 the land was confirmed to
Jacob Newcomber for $71 per acre.

On 23 September 1842 John Mateer was appointed Administrator of the Estate of
Mary Mateer of Silver Spring Township; bond was for $2000 with John J. Myers
and M. Holcomb as sureties. This Decendent was probably John's second wife
Mary Irvine Mateer; the record of their marriage in 1841 gives the groom's
residence as Hogestown and the bride's as Silver Spring Township; moreover,
family tradition says that this second wife "lived but a short time and had no
children."

On 2 January 1868 Robert Mateer was appointed Administrator of the Estate of
John Mateer; bond was for $40,000 with J. C. Dunlap and N. J. Lusk sureties.

On 31 March 1871 Robert B. Mateer of Mechanicsburg, for $622.22, conveyed to
William R. Mateer of St. Louis, Mo., and Mary Ellen Mateer of Mechanicsburg,
an undivided one-third interest in a brick house and three lots in
Mechanicsburg New Addition on Silver Spring Road; this property was conveyed on
20 March 1866 to John Mateer who has since died intestate leaving three
children, viz., William R., Robert B. and Mary Ellen Mateer; the transfer was
subject to a dower of $933.33 one-third for the widow. Signed R. B. Mateer,

On 26 August 1832 Baily Mateer and Eliza Jane Mateer, son and daughter of James
Mateer late of Allen Township deceased, both minors over 14 years, petitioned
to have Levi Markel appointed their guardian; the court so agreed.

The 1850 census lists a Bayley Mateer, preacher, living in Lower Allen
Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania; his houshold included his wife Mary
A. and three children: Sarah J. aged 10, Albert aged 7, and James A. aged two
years. Bayley's age is given as 27, and his wife's age as 25. This man was
almost certainly Bailey, but with a very considerable discrepancy for his and
his wife's ages.

In 1860 in Lower Allen Township, B. Mateer, laborer, aged 48 was listed with
wife M. aged 47, and children S. F. (female) aged 20 and J. D. (male) aged 12.

Buried in St. Johns "Peach Church", near Shiremanstown, Hampden Township.

Notes:

At the time of his father's death John Mateer, the eldist son aged 22 years,
"bought the home farm at the appraisement and kept the family together for
about four years." In 1833 the widow Rebecca and her two younger daughters
rented a house in Mechanicsburg; but after John sold the home place and moved
to a farm near Shiremantown, his mother and sister Mary went there to keep
house for him until his marriage in 1835, when they moved again to part of a
house belonging to Uncle John Mateer.

William Diven, John Mateer's father-in-law, "was born 3 November 1787 in a
small stone house which is still standing (1893) on the west bank of the
Susquehanna River, just south of the Cumberland Valley Railway bridge close to
the river. His father had charge of the ferry, was a stone mason by trade, and
is said to have built the second stone house in Harrisburg and the stone wall
enclosing Silver Springs Graveyard." William Diven's wife Rebecca, daughter of
Samuel and Mary (McMullen) Nelson, was born in Monaghan Township, York County,
Pennsylvania, 31 August 1789.

On 1 April 1835 John Mateer Jr. and wife Mary, for $4259.13, conveyed to
Christian Musselman of Fairview Township, York County, Pennsylvania, a parcel
of land in Allen Township, Cumberland County 125 acres 43 perches, "neat
measure", bounded by property of John Mateer Sr., James Mateer, Henry Myers,
Henry Lonecker, Nancy McCue and Abraham Hensh. This tract in his lifetime and
at the time of his death property of William Mateer, grandfather of the present
grantor, passed by his will dated 23 July 1810 to his son William, father of
the present grantor; the second William died intestate and title to the land
passed by Orphans Court decree dated 10 November 1834 to the aforesaid John
Mateer, eldest son of the decedent. Musselman, the present grantee, agreed to
pay $2882.91 1/2 in cash, also annual interest on $1032.16, "her thirds" to
Rebecca Mateer widow her lifetime, and to post bond for the payment to William
Wise and Margarete Jane his wife, for $344.05.5 "their distributory share of
her father's estate." Witnesses: John Mateer, Andrew Mateer.

John and Mary (Diven) Mateer first went to housekeeping on a farm described as
the Clovermill property, located near Shiremanstown, Cumberland County,
Pennsylvania. Their son, John Lowrie Mateer takes up the story there: "In the
spring of 1840 they sold the Clovermill property for $3000.00. They rented a
house in Dillsburg and lived there one year. During this year father bought a
farm in Adams County, two miles from Petersburg towards Gettysburg. They moved
onto this farm in the spring of 1841."

In 1850 this family was listed as living in Huntington Township, Adams County,
Pennsylvania.; John aged 42 was a farmer with real estate valued at $4500.
Other members of the family were Mary aged 34, Calvin aged 14, Jane aged 12,
William aged 7 and John aged two years.

Continuing with John L. Mateer's account, this Adams County farm "contained 120
acres with a good brick house and barn. Father paid $3000.00 for it. They
lived there until 1857 when they sold the farm for $6000.00 cash. Father went
at once to Mercer County Pennsylvania and bought from Samuel Park (mother's
cousin) for $6000.00 cash. This farm contains 209 acres and is located one
mile west of Pine Grove, now 'Grove City'. The family went out in the spring
of 1857 on the Pennsylvania Railway to Pittsburg, thence by stage. Father and
brother Will drove three hourses to a wagon loaded with household goods over
the mountain. In spring 1865 they sold this farm for $15,000.00 and removed to
Henry, Illinois.

In the summer of 1872 John Mateer moved again to Monmouth, Warren County,
Illinois; so that his younger children might have greater educational
opportunities at the college there.

Mr. Mateer was a devoted and upright Christian man, an Elder in the
presbyterian Church at Monmouth. He took special interest in foreign missions,
to which cause he gave two sons.

The will of John Mateer of the Town of Henry and County of Marshall, Illinois,
now the City of Monmouth, Illinois, "of the age of 65 years", written 13
January 1874, bequeathed to wife Mary N. Mateer, "that part of my estate which
the law provides"; to son Calvin W. Mateer and to Jennie Henderson, $500 each;
to son John Lowrie Mateer, $1000; to son Horace N. Mateer, $625; to son Robert
M. Mateer and to daughter Lillie E. Mateer, $500 each; also $150 to Nettie
Henderson my granddaughter; all of the balance of the estate to be divided
equally amongst seven children, namely, Calvin W., Jennie Henderson, William
D., John L., Robert M. Horace N. and Lillie E. Mateer; their mother his wife
Mary N. Mateer to be guardian for Horace N. and Lillie E. Mateer, minors.
Witnesses; J. R. W...ter, William F. Smith.

In the 1880 census of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, First Ward, Mary N. Mateer
aged 62 years was head of a household which included three of her children:
Robert M., minister aged 27, Horace N. aged 24 "at school", and Lillian E.,
teacher aged 22 years.

of the list and gives Rebecca's married name as Book.

Census searching has provided a little possible Wise data in Cumberland County,
but nothing hereafter can be asserted without equivocation.

The 1860 census of Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County, lists W. Wise,
shoemaker aged 51 years, living with M. Wise aged 49, William Wise aged 25 and
R. Wise aged 14 years.

years, was living next door to A. Mateer, female aged 75 years (his
mother-in-law). Dr. Mateer's household included his wife M. I. Mateer aged 38
and three children, G. W. aged 13, J. A. aged 10 and A. H. aged 9 years.

Letters of Administration on the Estate of William Mateer were granted on 9
January 1866 to Margaret Mateer; bond was for $600 with John Sprenkle and J. K.
Leiter as sureties.

On 3 October 1850 John D. Becker and Charles W. Becker were appointed
Administrators of the Estate of Simon Becker. Settlement was continued until
12 August 1857, but no listing of heirs is available in the microfilmed probate
records of Adams County, Pennsylvania.

In the record of his second marriage the groom was identified as Captain Henry
W. Mateer, merchant of Hogestown; and the 1850 census of Silver Spring Township
shows H. W. Mateer, merchant age 34 with real property worth $1200. His
household included E. S. Mateer aged 27, Alfrete Mateer aged 9, Mary A. Mateer
aged 22, Jane Salberto aged 42 and Mary A. Salberto aged 20 years.

On 1 November 1850 Jacob Leiby and wife Sarah Ann of Carlisle, for $6526.53,
deeded to Henry Wilson Mateer of the Village of Hogestown land in North
Middleton Township, Cumberland County, 93 acres 69 perches on Conodoquinnett
Creek along Waggoner's Gap Road, with dower payments to John Myers and his wife
Catherine, formerly widow of Philip Baker deceased. On 1 April 1851 Henry
Wilson Mateer of Hogestown and his wife Elizabeth S. Mateer, for $1000,
conveyed to George Leiby of Hogestown, Lot No. 42 in Hogestown adjoining Poplar
Alley, which lot had been deeded to Mateer on 1 September 1843 by A. WillsEsquire and John Coyle. Witnesses: F. A. Mateer, Edward Porter.

Between 1856 and 1858 Henry W. Mateer moved to Marshall County, Illinois. In
the 1860 census H. W. Mateer, merchant aged 44 was living in Henry Illinois;
his household then included his wife Elizabeth aged 37, children Charles aged
7, Mary aged 4 (these four born in Pennsylvania), Lucy aged two born in
Illinois, along with two servants and a clerk. In 1870 still in Henry,
Illinois, H. Wilson Mateer aged 53 had "no business"; his family was wife
Elizabeth aged 48, daughters Mary aged 13, Lucy aged 11 and Hettie aged 9. In
1880 Henry Matteer aged 64 was a grocer in Henry; his wife Elizabeth S. aged 57
reported that both her parents were born in Germany; children at home were MAry
G. aged 22, Lucy J. aged 20 and Hettie R. aged 18. One Ellen Sully, born in
Pennsylvania about 1827, continued in this family as a domestic servant for
over twenty years.

On 6 February 1888 Louis M. Lincoln, a son-in-law, petitioned for
Administration on the intestate estate of Henry W. Mateer who had died on 15
Janurary 1888; property of the deceased included household goods, horse,
harness, buggies, notes and accounts, as well as three lots, a house lot, a
vacant lot and five acre lot; total value was estimated at $300; survivors were
listed as Alfred Mateer, Mary Grace Lincoln, Lucy Jane Mateer and Henrietta R.
Mateer.

On 1 April 1856 and again on 8 October 1857 David McGarry, a carpenter of
Shiremanstown, Hampden Township, Cumberland County, with his wife Elizabeth
sold lots in Shiremanstown.

In the 1860 census of Shiremanstown David McGary, carpenter aged 41 years was
living with E. McGary aged 35, M. R. McGary aged 9, H. W. McGary aged 9, H. W.
McGary aged 7 and R. M. McGary aged one year.

On 20 January 1862 David McGary of Lower Allen Township deeded into the
"separate estate of his wife Elizabeth" a house and lot in Shiremanstown, which
the couple had bought on 29 March 1856.

The will of David McGary of Shiremanstown, written 2 May 1874, probated 13 July
1874, bequeathed to his wife Elizabeth all property, including 40 by 200 foot
lot bounded by Jeremiah Kohler, Oak Alley and John Freese's heirs. Witnesses:

Elizabeth — David McGary. David (son of John McGary) was born 18 Sep 1818; died 5 Jul 1874, , Cumberland, Pennsylvania. [Group Sheet]

This Robert McTeer was a blacksmith by trade and for many years a Justice of
the Peace for Blount County.

In the 1830 census fo the Western District of Blount County. Robert McTeer was
listed as aged 30-40, with sons two 5-10 and one under five years; his wife
aged 40-50 and daughters two 5-10 and two under five years. In the 1850 census
of Blount County the 1st Civil District, Bobert McTeer, "B. Smith", aged
52 years is listed with wife Ellen aged 48, daughters Nancy aged 16 and
Mary aged 14; all four born in Tennessee.

On 10 April 1878 Esther Mary McTeer aged 45 years, residing in the 6th
District, Loudon County, Tennessee, "widow of Robert McTeer who served the full
period of 14 days in the Tennessee Militia during the War of 1812", applied for
a widow's pension. She stated that Robert had died at Morganton, Tennessee, on
8 November 1869; J. L. Beaty and Hannah G. McClung attested to her signature
and character. This application was rejected on 4 February 1881 on
"Presumptive abandonment" after numerous requests for more data as to the
service.

During the War of 1812 John M. McTeer enlisted at Knoxville, Tennessee, on 20
September 1814 as a private in Captain David McKaney's (or McCarney's) Company
Tennessee Militia; he served 226 days, including the taking of Pensacola, until
he was discharged 3 May 1815. On 13 November 1850, 13 May 1851 and 3 April
1855, John M. McTeer of Gordon County, Georgia, applied for bounty land in the
right of this service; his warrant #35 411-80-55 was sent to Cassville,
Georgia. In July 1871 John M. McTeer aged 73 filed a pension claim from
Atchison, Kansas, allowed at $8.00 per month on 29 March 1872, Topeka Agency,
Act of 1871.

In 1838 these McTeers moved to northern Georgia. On 5 January 1839 John M.
McTeer of Cass (now Bartow) County, sold for $50 to William Tyler of Cass
County, one acre on the west side of Cassville. Witnesses: Stephenson
Johnson, James Watson. Acknowledged by Johnson on 7 January 1839, and filed
for record on 31 January 1867.

In 1840 John M. Mctier was listed as a resident of Cassville, Georgia; his
household had three males aged 0-5, 20-30 and 40-50; three females aged 5-10,
15-20, and 40-50 years; there was also one slave. In 1850 John M. McTeer was
living in Gordon County, Georgia; he was listed in that census as a "B Mason"
aged 52 years, with wife Mary aged 60, daughters Mary A. aged 24 and Martha aged
20 years. All four were born in Tennessee.

In 1838 Henry McTeer and his sister moved to Cass County, Georgia, conveyed to
James Lockridge of Cass County, for $125, 40 acres in the 4th District 3rd
Section Lot No. 83. On 7 February 1850 Henry F. McTier of Cass County, deeded
to Christopher Dodd for $600, 40 acres in the 4th District, 3rd Section, Lot
No. 10, and 20 acres in the 5th District, 3rd Section, Lot No. 90; McTier had
bought this 40 acre parcel on 7 February 1849 from Lewis Tumlin for $241 and
the 20 acres on 19 April 1847 from Imri Tumlin for $100. These last three
deeds were recorded on 2 May 1850.

In the 1860 census of the 828th District Cass County, Georgia, Henry McTier
aged 46, born in Tennessee, his wife Amanda aged 37, born in Georgia, and their
six children, Nancy J., Rachel, John, Sarah, Mary and Eliza, were living in the
household of Benjamin Ivy aged 78, born in Virginia, along with Sarah Ivy aged
45 born in North Carolina and Nancy McTier, school teacher, aged 40 born in
Tennessee.

"During the Civil War Mr. McTeer was too old for service, but when he died on 22
February 1864 his only request was to be buried in a casket like those of the
confederate soldiers." In April 1864 Amanda M. McTier was granted Letters of
Administration on the intestate estate of Henry F. McTier.

On 2 October 1883 Amanda McTier, Eliza J. McTier, Mary P. McTier, John C.
McTier, Rachel N. Holmes, Sallie L. Bruce and Nancy A. Vernor, all of Bartow
County, sold to Reuben Gaines of Gordon County, Georgia for $700, land in the
north half of Lot No. 51 north of the road from Cassville to Kingston, plus two
acres south of the said road, "known as the Ben Ivey place" in the 5th District
3rd Section.

On 5 March 1887 Hiram H. Holmes, Eliza J. McTier, and Mary P. McTier, all of
Bartow County, deeded to John T. Morris of Bartow County, for $650 a dwelling
and lot in Cartersville, Georgia.

Ten days after this last conveyance, on 15 March 1887, J. J. Holmes deeded to
Mary P. McTier, Eliza J. McTier and H. H. Holms for $460, Lot No 22 located in
Cassville on the road from Cassville to Adairsville and abutting on the "shop
lot" of H. H. Holmes. This Property, "known as the Mary P. and Lidie McTier
place" was evidently the home of these two youngest daughters of Henry Ferguson
McTier.

On 1 September 1941 Sam Verner, Susie Verner, J. C. Verner, Alice Verner
Bedford, McTier Verner, E. W. Verner and Dorothy Verner Morrison deeded their
interest in this property to Mary P. McTier. On 3 September 1941 H. H. Holmes,
Mrs. H. E. Holmes, Robert Holmes, J. F. Holmes and W. W. Holmes executed a
similar conveyance to Mary P. McTier; and on that same date for a consideration
of $100, J. O. Holmes, Susie Holmes Farris and C. C. Holmes deeded their
interest likewise to Mary P. McTier. But on 8 August 1941 Mary P. McTier had
conveyed the property to H. E. Bruce (her nephew). These five deeds relating
to the Cassville Lot No. 22 were filed together on 3 November 1942.

One Samuel McTeer was coroner of Monroe County, Tennessee, in May 1824, but it
is not clear whether it was this or some other.

In the 1830 census of Blount County Samuel McTerr aged 30-40 was listed with a
wife aged 20-30, one son under five years, three daughters, two 5-10 and one
under five years.

On 13 February 1832 Samuel McTeer of Blount County, for $300, conveyed to James
Henry of Blount County, 133 acres on Bakers Creek in Blount County, land
granted to John Ewing, adjoining Robert Boyd, James Scott and Robert Bogle,
Witnesses: R. Bogle, John allen. On 12 November 1840 this land was surveyed
as 160 acres, and the deed acknowledged by the witness R. Bogle on 5 February
1849 and again on 24 March 1858 by the Clerk who identified the handwriting of
John Allen, then deceased, was filed on 25 March 1858.

Between the date of this deed and the date on Robert Bogle's acknowledgement
the grantor Samuel McTeer had moved away from East Tennessee. He probably left
soon after the Blount County marriage of his oldest daughter, Mary Jane, on 22
September 1842.

On 10 December 1857 Samuel McTeer took up government land in T22 N, R 3 E,
Downs Township, McLean County, Illinois, and both Samuel McTeer and S. W.
McTeer were listed as residents there in 1859-1860.

In the 1860 census of Downs Township, McLean County, Samuel Matear aged 60 was
head of a household which included his wife Isabel aged 50 as well as Henry
Cooper aged 45 and William Cooper aged 46 years; all four were born in
Tennessee.

Samuel McTeer died at the home of his daughter Mary Delzell.

Notes:

Montgomery McTeer was a man of varied interests. During the 1840s and 1850s he
owned a hotel in Maryville, which was under the management of his
brother-in-law, Frank Marion Hood. Ealier he had owned a printing press and a
supply of cabinet makers tools. In the 1850 census of Blount County, 1st Civil
District, he was listed as a millwright.

During the Civil War the State of Tennessee was officially part of the
Confederacy, yet most of the people living in East Tennesse were strong
adherents to the Union cause. Under the circumstances Blount County
communities were subject to frequent invasions and counterinvasions; Maryville
sometimes had scouting parties of both sides in town on the same day.
Destruction of local property was inevitable, and it was equally inevitable that
there would be political efforts to obtain compensation. Following the close
of hostilities the Blount County Court appointed Montgomery McTeer to make out
the county's claim against the United States Government for damage done to the
court house by Federal soldiers, "on the understanding that the said McTeer is
to receive ten percent of whatever he recovers but in case of no recovery, no
pay."

In May 1877 Mrs. Martha McTeer, widow of Montgomery McTeer, was allowed one
year's support from her husband's estate.

The will of Martha W. McTeer, written 22 April 1893, probated 28 January 1898,
bequeathed to the youngest child of son S. B. McTeer "which shall be living at
my decease" land in the Sixth District, Blount County, 201 acres "where S. B.
McTeer now lives", with the proviso that "S. B. McTeer and his present wife
Betty shall live there their lifetime and have full control of the property."
All personal property to be divided equally between two children, S. B. McTeer
and Harriet C. Henry. Executor: Will A. McTeer.

On 8 September 1901 Will A. McTeer was appointed Executor of the estate of
Martha W. McTeer deceased; bond was for $250 with F. H. Lannon as surety.
Inventory mentions a 201 acre farm in the 6th Civil District "where S. B.
McTeer her son now lives."

On 4 February 1858 William McTeer and wife Margaret J. McTeer of Knox County,
Tennessee, deeded to W. S. Porter of Blount County, Tennessee, for $657.40,
lands in the 8th Civil District, Blount County, formerly owned by Joseph
Tedford.

In youth William McTeer was apprenticed to a tailor; later he became a merchant
and hotel keeper in Maryville. He served as Postmaster there, as Trustee for
Blount County, and as major of the local militia.

In the 1850 census of Blount County, 9th Civil District, William McTeer aged 34
years was listed as a tailor, with wife Margaret aged 33 years, and six
children aged one to twelve years. In addition to the McTeer family, this
household included four more "tailors" as well as other tradesmen and lodgers
to a total of 27 persons.

About the close of the Civil War William and his family moved to Baltimore,
Maryland, where they remained until 1876, when they returned to Knoxville,
Tennessee, and were thereafter engaged in the wholesale clothing business.
Much information on activities and descendants is abstracted from newspaper
clippings filed under the name McTeer in the McClung Collection, Lawson-McGhee
Library.

bequeathed legacies as follows: to nephew William M. Hood of Knoxville, real
estate in Maryville, $150 and a blue and white coverlet; to grandnephew William
Peter Hood and grandniece Margaret E. Hood a lot on Church Street in Maryville,
and Margaret to have in addition bedroom furniture and bedding; to Francis P.
Hood Jr., a vacant lot in Maryville; to Eliza M. Hood, a bureau and side
saddle; to Mary E. Hood, bedding; these last three legatees were specified as
children of nephew Francis P. Hood; to niece Harriet J. C. Henry, six cane
bottom chairs; to John E. Hood, a blue, red and white coverlet; if the claim
against the U. S. Government is ever paid, that money to nephews Francis P. and
John E. Hood; and remaining money on hand to nephews William M. and John C.
Hood; to niece Minerva Rule, clothing; to Mary A. George, a shawl; to Mary P.
McTeer, a cloak; to Robert N. Hood, pictures and a looking glass; to Mamie
Gillespie, a blanket; to nephew Francis P. Hood, rocking chairs and a blanket.
Executor: nephew A. M. Rule. Witnesses: R. A. Tedford, E. S. Cunningham.

The aformentioned U. S. Government claim was probably in connection with damage
to the Blount County Court House when Federal troops raided Maryville during
the Civil War.

past been afflicted", written 27 January 1858, probated in May 1868, bequeathed
to wife Susan, the dwelling house and furnishings, a horse, a mare and the
proceeds of the plantation for her natural life; to three sons Madison J. C.
Sloan, George W. Sloan and William H. Sloan, all other real estate, viz. "the
old home tract", a tract bought from Jesse Bright, and 80 acres entered as
timber land; George and William to have one-half the blacksmith tools since
Madison already has the other half; the sons to pay their sisters from the
proceeds of the plantation, Madison to pay $75 to Sallee Peeler, George to pay
$75 to Elizabeth Smalling and William to pay $75 to Susan Sloan; so that these
