Notes:
Roy had no children. He and Odis Caylor grew up together in Townsend, Tennessee.
They were best friends, and even though they fought like cats and dogs, either
of them would take up for the other.
There are many stories Odis has told about growing up with Roy. One of the best
is about the giant flip [slingshot] they made. They carved a giant flip, and put
a long rubber band on it. The flip was so big it was all one of them could do to
hold it as the other put a rock in the rubber band and backed up as far as he
could, then "let er go"! The first mistake they made was deciding to try out
their new flip at school! They knew they were not supposed to have a flip at
school, but boys will be boys.
During lunch, they found a good flat rock and with Roy holding and Odis pulling
they tried out their new flip! Odis said he backed up and pulled as hard as he
could, when something hit him on the bottom hard enough to almost lift him off
the ground. He let the rock go, and felt another blow on his rear. He doubled
up his fist and swung around, missing the school teacher's nose by inches.
It seems Roy was so intent on watching how far the rock was traveling, yelling
"watch her go Odie, watch her go!", that he didn't hear Miss. Angie Caylor come
up behind him. When the paddle connected, he thought it was Odis and didn't
realize it was Miss. Angie until it was nearly too late.
Needless to say, the big flip didn't get another try, but was always the one
remembered.
