    Notes:

Martha Jane Huskey Ogle was part Indian.

After the death of William, Martha took her five sons and two daughters for a short visit with relatives in Virginia. Her brother, Peter Huskey, and his family then accompanied them on their long trip to the East Tennessee area to establish their home.

They were in the Sevier County, Tennessee as early as 1805. There is a record in Tennessee State Library and Archives that shows Hercules and Thomas Ogle sold land to William Murphy in 1807. This land was situated in the area of "mouth of Walden's Creek" in Sevier County, Tennessee.

On 19 January 1811, Martha Ogle, "relict of William Ogle" and her sons relinquished to James Atchison of Edgefield County, South Carolina their claim on the property that William Ogle had bought from George Hagood in 1796. This deed of conveyance was recorded in Deed Book 31, p 291/92 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.

According to the church minutes of "Fork of Little Pigeon Church", Martha Ogle was the one of the group of people from White Oak Flats Community that asked the Fork of Little Pigeon Church to establish a church in White Oak Flats as an arm of the church in Sevierville in December 1817.

Sometime between December 1817 to July 1826, Martha Ogle died and was buried in Gatlinburg, Tennessee behind Hays House Restaurant.

Some researchers claim her given name should not include Jane.

    Notes:

Peter Huskey lived in the vicinity of Back Creek in Frederick County during the
early 1750's thru mid-1750's. During that time, he was the chain carrier for
    four different land surveys there.

Sometime during the mid-1750's, Peter Huskey and his family moved to Rowan
County, North Carolina. They settled in the area where southern Guilford County
and northern Randolph County are now located.

He was found along with his son John Huskey on the "William Millikan's List of
Taxables" for Rowan County, North Carolina in 1768.

Family tradition says his first wife was killed by Indians. No information has
    been found to verify this.

Peter Huskey Sr., was found on the 1778 tax list for Captain Cox's District in
Rowan County, North Carolina. His land was valued at 142 pounds. His son
Peter Huskey Jr. was listed on the same tax list, and his land was valued at
    202 pounds.

On Saturday, 8 August 1778, Peter Huskey was listed as a "nonjuror" in Captain
Cox's District of Rowan County, North Carolina. He refused to take the "Oath
of Affirmation and Allegiance" to the State of North Carolina.

In 1785 Peter Huskey and his family were living in Wilkes County, Georgia near
his brother-in-law, William Ogle and his family according to "1785 Tax List of
Wilkes County, Georgia." Six District, Edgefield County, South Carolina prior
to 1790. Peter Huskey is listed as the head of household in 1790 and 1800
Federal Census of Edgefield County, South Carolina.

On 28 Oct 1797 Peter Huskey and his son Jonathan Huskey of Edgefield District,
South Carolina bought 200 acres of land from William McCarter of Abbeville
District, South Carolina. This land was originally patented to William
McCarter on 6 Nov 1786 from the state of South Carolina. It was situated in
the "District of Ninety Six and County of Edgefield on a creek called Rockey
Creek waters of Stephens Creek." (Deed Book 22, p 265/66)

On 6 July 1801 Peter Huskey bought 24.5 acres of land from the state of South
Carolina. It was situated in "District of Edgefield on a small branch of
Rockey Creek, waters of Stephen Creek and Savannah River." (South Carolina
    State Archives, Columbia, S. C. - State Plats Vol. 38 (2nd), p 359)

On 30 Sep 1801 Peter Huskey bought 289 acres of land from William Brafford of
Barnwell District, South Carolina. This land was on "Rockey Creek waters of
Stephens Creek" in Edgefield District, South Carolina." (Deed Book 22,
    p 275/77)

It is believed that Peter Huskey sold his lands before leaving for Sevier
County, Tennessee in 1804. In 1805 Peter Huskey brought his married children
(Isaac, Jonathan, John, Sarah, and two other daughters) with the Ogle clan from
Edgefield District, South Carolina to settle in the Walden's Creek area of
    Sevier County, Tennessee.

In 1805 Peter Huskey entered 57 acres of land in the Emert's Cove area of
Sevier County, Tennessee and held it for a short time. From Tennessee State
Library & Archives, Nashville, Tennessee, there is a land grant (No. 1815) for
Frederick Emert, assignee of Peter Huskey. By this grant, Peter Huskey sold
the 57 acres of land in the Emert's Cove area to Frederick Emert prior to the
issuance of the land grant from the state of Tennessee in 1806.

Prior to the War of 1812, Peter Huskey went with some of his married children
to Union County, Illinois and then to Jefferson County, Missouri.

Family tradition says Peter Huskey came back from the West (Union County,
Illinois or Jefferson County, Missouri) and died in the White Oak Flats
community. He probably died before 1830. He is not listed in the 1830 Federal
Census of Tennessee, Illinois, or Missouri. No data on his burial place has
    been found.

  1. 15.  Hercules "Hike" Ogle Descendancy chart to this point (10.Martha3, 6.John2, 1.Thomas1) was born 1780, South Carolina; died Abt 1854, Gatlinburg, Sevier County, Tennessee; was buried White Oak Flats Cemetery, Gatlinburg, Sevier County, Tennessee.

    Notes:

That Hercules was married in 1803 is indicated by the will of his father, William Ogle. Hercules was willed the 100 acres of land on which he was living at that time. He was also named executor of the will along with his brother, Thomas Ogle.

The first record found in Sevier County, Tennessee is a deed by Hercules and Thomas Ogle to William Murphy for 48 acres of land at the mouth of Walden's Creek. They held title to the land by "virtue of seizure and occupancy." This deed was executed in 1807, indicating that they had lived in Sevier County for at least a year or two.

An early land grant for Hercules Ogle was found in the Tennessee State Archives. This was surveyed 25 May 1807 and granted 18 May 1810:
"....unto Hercules Ogle assignee of David Waddle a certain tract or parcel
of land containing fifty-four acres lying in the County of Sevier in the
District South of French Broad and Holston on Walden's Creek there being
due and chargeable on said land the sum of Fifty four Dollars..."

Just when Hercules moved from here is unknown but it is said that he settled on Dudley Creek in the Glades settlement and did not take part in the settlement of Gatlinburg.

Hercules Ogle and his wife are listed among the charter members of the White Oak Flats Baptist Church in 1817. He also appears on the 1830 and 1840 Federal census for Sevier County.

In the GUARDIANS, EXECUTORS & ADMINISTRATORS Settlement Book for Sevier County, Tennessee, there is a record of settlement of the estate of Hercules Ogle. Before the courthouse of 1856, Brice McFalls was appointed administrator for the estate of Hercules Ogle, but he resigned for some reason. Just about 1856 the County Court of Sevier County appointed William W. Bohanon to administer and wind up the estate of Hercules Ogle. From aforesaid book, the heirs of Hercules Ogle are listed in this order, "Sarah Graham, William H. Ogle, John H. Ownby, the heirs of Stephen Huskey, and William Bohanon and wife."

Thomas went with his parents to Ninety Six District, Edgefield County, South Carolina from Wilkes County, Georgia.

Tom was named with his brother, Hercules, as coexecutor of their father's will in 1803 in Edgefield District, South Carolina. He also signed the 1811 deed of conveyance which disposed of the land left by William Ogle to his "four boys". Another deed, dated in 1825 and disposing of land in Edgefield District, South Carolina, was signed by Thomas and Sophia Ogle. They had apparently rented out this land after moving to Sevier County, Tennessee.

No Tennessee land grants prior to 1824 were found for Tom Ogle but it is known that he was in Sevier County as early as 1805. He and Hercules Ogle deeded 48 acres of land at the mouth of Walden's Creek to William Murphy in 1807. According to the deed, found in the Tennessee State Library and Archives, they held title to the land "by virtue of seizure and occupancy". The exact date of Tom's settlement in Gatlinburg is not known but he was one of the first settlers there.

Records of Tom's service in the War of 1812 were found in the National Archives. He served in Captain Andrew Lawson's Company of East Tennessee Drafted Militia Regiment, commanded by Colonel William Johnson, and fought against the Creek Indians. In 1850 and 1855, Tom received bounty land grants as a result of his service.

In December of 1817 when the White Oak Flats Baptist Church was formed as an arm of the Sevierville church, Tom Ogle and his wife were listed as charter members. The first church building was started in 1855 on Tom's land. It was located where the Arrowcraft Shop stands now. A deed conveying title of the land to the church by Thomas Ogle was executed on 8 April 1861. This is found in Sevier County Courthouse in Deed Book M, page 211.

Thomas J. Ogle has three land entries, which are dated from 1 May 1824 through 23 Jan 1826, in the Surveyor's Book No. 1 of Sevier County, Tennessee. These land entries were granted by the state of Tennessee. All these were located in the White Oak Flats community and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Tom left a will dated 27 Sep 1861 and probated in County Court in February of 1862. It is recorded in Will Book I, p 74-75. William T. Ogle is mentioned as Tom's eldest son and is named executor of the will. Also Tom mentioned "my son Thomas Ogle... my Sons, to wit., Preston, Levi and Caleb..." In the Court records, Thomas Ogle's will was admitted for probate 3 Feb 1862. On 3 March 1862, Caleb Ogle and Wilson Duggan were appointed administrators of the estate of Thomas Ogle. (Court Minutes Book I, page 747 and 752)

There is a list of "Inventory of the property belonging to the estate of Thomas J. Ogle, Dec'd., late of Sevier County, Tennessee in the Inventory Book, page 190/92.

In the GUARDIANS, EXECUTORS and ADMINISTRATORS Settlement Book for Sevier County, Tennessee, there is a record for the estate of Thomas J. Ogle. From this book, the following list of the living heirs of Thomas J. Ogle is quoted: "the above Settlement shows that there is in the hands of the administrators the sum of $187.23 to be equally divided among twelve heirs, to wit., Levi, Hercules, Isaac, Rebecca wife of Preston, William T., Celeb, Thomas, Esther Trantham, Hichols Ownsby, Jacob Evans, Andrew Conner, and David Owensby & wife."

The family appears in the Federal Census records of Sevier County from 1830 through 1860. The census and other records found show that the second generation of Ogle sons in Gatlinburg began using their father's initial in their names when there was confusion created by the same names.

Shucky moved with the family to Sevier County, Tennessee as early as 1805, soon after the death of his father.

Isaac was one of the first settlers in Gatlinburg. No land records prior to 1824 were found for Isaac Ogle but it is shown by Richard Reagan's early grants that Isaac and William, his brother, entered land adjoining Richard's land on Mill Creek. This ran from Mill Creek down to "the lane" (Reagan Lane) and nearly to the old river road. Later records show this land as belonging to Isaac alone and still later to his son, Elijah Ogle. Isaac also entered land near the road from the Glades, running down to the mouth of Roaring Fork Creek in Gatlinburg. As his sons and daughters became of age, he gave them these lands and he moved to the Banner area north of Gatlinburg.

Isaac and his wife, Susannah, were charter members of the White Oak Flats Baptist Church. The family appears in the Sevier County, Tennessee Federal Census records, 1830 to 1880. Isaac died 2 Sep 1881 according to the Death Register of 1881 found in Sevier County Courthouse.

From RECORD OF COMMISSIONS OF OFFICERS IN THE TENNESSEE MILITIA 1796-1811, compiled by Mrs. John Trotwood Moore, William Ogle was commissioned as a Lieutenant of the 11th Regiment of Sevier County, Tennessee on 14 Februeary 1811 by the governor of the State of Tennessee.

William Ogle was one of the first settlers in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. No land records prior to 1824 were found for William Ogle, but it is shown by Richard Reagan's early grants that William Ogle and his brother, Isaac Ogle, entered land adjoining the Richard Reagan's land on Mill Creek. This ran from Mill Creek upward to the area below the Cherokee Orchard, Great Smoky Mountains National Park. As his sons and daughters became of age, he gave them these lands. He moved to the Sugarlands area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

William Ogle is listed on the 1837 Tax List of Sevier County, Tennessee.

He and Nancy were members of the White Oak Flats Baptist Church.

William Ogle was appointed as one of nine commissioners of the Sevier County Turnpike Company in 1841. It was "for the purpose of receiving subscription to the amount of twenty five thousand dollars to be applied to the purpose of making a turnpike road from the northern termination of the Smoky Mountain Turnpike road in Sevier County, Tennessee to some point on the most practical leading routes."

William Ogle and his family appeared in the 1830 through 1850 Federal Census of Sevier County, Tennessee.

An affidavit found in the Sevier County Courthouse, by R. R. Reagan and Mark Roberts, states that William Ogle left a will but that it was destroyed in the courthouse fire of 1856. The affidavit stated that his wife, Nancy be supported and have the use of both real and personal property during her lifetime. At her death, the lands "should be equally divided between his sons, James, Henry, and William Ogle; personal property is to be equally divided between all his sons and daughters with the exception of Thomas I. Ogle, husband of his daughter, Sarah Ogle of twelve and half dollars which was to be deducted from his and her share."

In the GUARDIANS, EXECUTORS and ADMINISTRATORS Settlement Book for Sevier County, Tennessee, there is a record for the estate of William Ogle. This gives a list of the living heirs of William Ogle. Quoted from the aforesaid book, "the above statement shows that there is in the hand of the Executor, the sum of $88.06/100 dollars to be divided among eleven heirs, to wit, William, James, Henry, & Thomas Ogle, Robert Conner & wife Milly, Samuel Watson & wife Martha, David Reagan & wife Jane, the heirs of Joseph Anderson & wife Mary, John Huskey and wife Elizabeth, the heirs of Aaron Ogle, and the heirs of David Watson & wife Rachel. So that Thomas Ogle may receive eleven & 25/100 dollars less than either of the other heirs.

    Notes:

Isaac Huskey went with his parents to Wilkes County, Georgia and later to Ninety Six District, Edgefield County, South Carolina.

Isaac Huskey and his wife Jane Miller are listed in the 1790 Federal Census of Edgefield County, South Carolina.

On 5 Dec 1796 Isaac Huskey bought 257 acres of land from the state of South Carolina. It was located in the "District of Ninety Six in Edgefield County on the waters of Steven's Creek, waters of Savannah River." It joined the lands of Obediah Henerson, William Anderson, William Rowens and ________ Mundays.

On 27 July 1798 Isaac Huskey bought 100 acres of land from Moses Brafford of Edgefield District, South Carolina. This land was situated on "Rockey Creek, waters of Savannah River" and joined the lands of Jonathan Huskey, Joseph Able, and Wyatt Morris.

On 6 Dec 1798 Isaac Huskey sold 140 acres of the original 257 acres of land, which he received from the state of South Carolina in 1796, to James Smith of Edgefield District, South Carolina.

On 15 Nov 1800 Isaac Huskey sold 50 acres of land to Wyatt Morris. This land joined the lands of Peter Huskey, Wyatt Morris, and Jonathan Huskey.

No record of the remaining 167 acres has been found, but it is believed that Isaac Huskey sold this land before leaving in 1804. In 1804 he came with the Huskey and the Ogle clans from Edgefield District, South Carolina To settle in the Walden's Creek and Wear's Valley area of Sevier County, Tennessee.

There are numerous land grants for Isaac Huskey in Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville, Tennessee.

One early grant was surveyed 24 July 1806 and granted 12 June 1810:
"...a certain tract or parcel of land containing Twenty five acres and two
Roods lying in the County of Sevier in the District South of French Broad
and Holsont on the water of the west fork of Little Pigeon River there being
due and chargeable on said land the sum of Twenty five Dollars and fifty
Cents with the Interest due thereon."

It joined vacant land and Richard McBryant's land in the Wear's Valley of Sevier County, Tennessee.

Isaac Huskey made seven land entries dated from 1 May 1824 through 3 Apr 1835 in the Surveyor's Book N. 1 of Sevier County, Tennessee (Register of Deeds Office). These land entries by Isaac Huskey were located in the area where the Twins Creek picnic area is now, and a part of the Cherokee Orchard and the Sugarlands (all now a part of Great Smoky Mountains National Park). This was the homeplace where Isaac and his wife Jane Miller lived until their death.

In 1813 Isaac Huskey and his eldest son, James Huskey, signed a petition to the General Assemby of Tennessee from the French Broad and Holston Country. (The original petition is in Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville, TN.)

Isaac Huskey and his wife, Jane Miller, appeared in the 1830 and 1840 Federal Census of Sevier County, Tennessee.

From the GUARDIANS, EXECUTORS & ADMINISTRATORS Settlement Book for Sevier County, Tennessee, there is a record of settlement of the estate of Isaac Huskey. Evidently William Huskey was appointed as administrator by County Court in late 1840's. He continued to handle the affairs of his father's estate until 28 Feb 1860, last recorded entry before William Huskey's death in 1861. From the aforesaid book, there is a list of the heirs of Isaac Huskey who had not received their shares from the estate. They are listed in this order: "Peter Huskey's Share, James Huskey's Share, Isaac Huskey's Share, Joshua Reagan's Share, and Silas Huskey's Share." They were living out west (Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas) at that time.

    Notes:

Jonathan Huskey went with his parents to Wilkes County, Georgia and later to
the Ninety Six District, Edgefield County, South Carolina.

On 28 Oct 1797, Jonathan Huskey joined his father, Peter Huskey in buying 200
acres of land from William McCarter of Abbeville District, South Carolina.
This land was originally patented to William McCarter on 6 Nov 1786 from the
State of South Carolina. It was situated in the "District of Ninety Six and
County of Edgefield on a creek called Rockey Creek waters of Stephens Creek"

Jonathan Huskey and his wife, Jane, are listed in the 1800 Federal Census of
Edgefield District, South Carolina. There was one boy and three girls born in
the ten year period of 1790/1800 to Jonathan and Jane Huskey.

On 4 Feb 1804, Jonathan Huskey sold 150 acres of land to John Bailey of
Edgefield District, South Carolina. It was situated "in District aforesaid on
Rockey Creek a branch of Stephens Creek waters of Savannah River." It joined
the lands of Gideon Palmer, __________ Logan, and Charles Williams.

In 1804 Jonathan Huskey and his family came with the Huskey and Ogle clans from
Edgefield District, South Carolina to settle in the Walden's Creek area of
    Sevier County, Tennessee.

In 1805 Jonathan Huskey bought 50 acres of land in the Walden's Creek area of
Sevier County, Tennessee and held it for a short time. In the Tennessee State
Library & Archives, Nashville, Tennessee, there is a land grant for James
Riggins, assignee of Jonathan Huskey. This land grant indicates that Jonathan
Huskey sold 50 acres of land in the Walden's Creek to James Riggins prior to
the issuance of his grant from the state of Tennessee in 1906.

Just before the War of 1812 broke out, Jonathan Huskey and his family went to
Union County, Illinois. They were among the first settlers in the town of
    Jonesboro, Illinois.

From "Illinois Census Returns" by Margaret Cross Norton, Jonathan Huskey
appeared in the 1818 and 1820 lists. Both lists reveal that there was one
white male - 21 years and upward, and five other whites in his family plus two
    servants or slaves.

There are numerous deeds for Jonathan Huskey and his wife, Jane, in Union
County, Illinois. The deeds indicated that he owned large amounts of land in
the town of Jonesboro, Illinois. (The dates of the deeds ranged from 10 Oct
    1817 to 14 Aug 1826.)

Just about 1826, Jonathan Huskey and his family migrated to Jefferson County,
Missouri. They are listed in the 1830 Federal Census of Jefferson County,
Missouri. He had two boys still at home - one born 1800/10 and other born
    1810/15.

Jonathan Huskey and his wife are believed to be buried in Jefferson County,
    Missouri.
