    Wiley Jackson Brickey is an American Hero, he was awarded a posthumous Distinguished Service Cross for bravery in 1933.

    In August 1899, Lt. Goddard and 36 men from Blount County left Maryville for Camp Mead, Pennsylvania to join Co. "H" of the 47th Voluntary Infantry. They reached the Philippines by way of the Suez Canal, and had their first engagement in January 1900.

    The men from Blount County gave an excellent account of themselves. It was the custom to put the largest men in front of the columns in marching. Both sets of four were from Blount County. Frank Burns was a corporal of the squad composed of Perry and William Weagley, D.L. "Fate" Brickey, Roscoe Cochran, Richard Burns, Charles Childress and Tom Jenkins. The Blount contingent furnished the crack scouts, Eagle Rose, Perry Weagley, Frank Burns, Richard Burns, Fate Brickey and Charles Childress are often mentioned in the scouting reports.

    The files of the Maryville Times from August 1898 until the return of these men, has a full account of the activities of the group in the letters to the editor from Lt. Goddard and Stg. W.J. Brickey.

    Of the 36 men who went from Blount County to the Philippines, two were killed (Stg. Wiley J. Brickey and Sgt. Frank W. Burns), and 8 were wounded.

    Inez Burns is the Blount County Tennessee Historian.

    Known as Miss. B, by many of the people she taught, Inez Burns has done more to
    record and keep the history of Tennessee, than any one. This History and many
    others would not have been written with out her help. It would take a book on
    Miss. B, just to list her many indeavers, the many books she has written or the
    many she helped to write.

    The State of Tennessee named a Highway "The Inez Burns Parkway", in her honor.

    Inez did not have a middle name, but always wanted one, so she picked one for
    her self, Elizabeth.

    When asked once why she never married, her reply was, "By the time they made up
    their mind, I had changed mine."

    Dee Lansford writes:

    "I have been able to spend time with Inez over the last six years, not as much
    as I would like, but my family might frown if I just moved in with her. In the
    time I have known her, she has taught me more about my family, hometown and
    state than I ever learned in all my fifty some years. We have spent hours
    driving through the Mountains, and the past comes alive for me through her. She
    remembers every little detail, and every small story about the people that
    lived in this beautiful country. I was raised here, but could not see what was
    around me, I had to leave for many years before I could see what a beautiful
    county I had lived in. In all my travels I have never seen anything as
    beautiful as my mountains, or had a friend as dear and true as Inez. She has
    made it possible for me to share with you the History of our family."
